So I decided to get one of these portable units so I could use it elsewhere after I get the new AC for the second floor. I decided on the two hose model just because it makes more sense to me. A single hose unit basically uses the air in the room to cool the condenser then blows it out the window, so it creates a negative pressure. The two hose model does not do that (although this one can operate as a single hose unit too). It draws in outside air to cool the condenser then blows that air out the window not taking any air from the room itself. Much more efficient. I have some experience with Air Conditioning so I know this to be true.
Anyway, I went with the larger 12k BTU unit knowing it might be too big for the small room, But I did not want to go small because I might end up using it to cool my garage which is my home gym, next summer. For that I would need the extra power. Plus I figured I could open the door and cool the hallway and possibly another room. Which is what I did a few times when it got real hot. It was able to cool a lot more than just my small bedroom which is maybe 200 sq ft. I ended up moving into the largest room which has a vaulted ceiling and it cools it nicely. And by that I mean 69 degrees. I like to use a blanket and be cold when I sleep. None of that 75 degree stuff for me. If you want a room cold this unit will do it.
Now if the room is too small it can bring the temp down before it pulls the humidity out so it might feel like it's not doing the job. I think this might be the case for some of the negative reviews I read. It actually seems to work better when i leave the door open a bit so it has to work a little harder. Makes sense actually.
That said, I did a lot of research before I bought this unit. The reviews are all over the place so it was pretty frustrating trying to decide on a unit to buy. I ended up going with this one since the reviews were pretty good especially when it came to the construction of the hoses. They are very heavy duty hoses to be sure. I was not expecting them to be that high a quality. The window kit is metal and pretty solid. I have double hung windows so it works well, if you have sliders it might not fit as nicely. I ended up using painters tape to seal any gaps so I could take it out easily if the night was going to be cool - which I did a few times. Taking it in and out is not a big deal.
As some reviews noted, it can be a bit loud, but not much more than a window AC unit. I normally run the fan on low unless I am cooling more than one room. To me it's like white noise, to someone else it might be annoying. I have never had any issues with water. Another advantage to the two hose system is that is uses the hot air to pick up moisture and blow it out the window. Pretty unique design. I have checked for water a few times by just holding a plastic pan under the drain. I got a little out, but not much. I did that like two or three times all summer. Every now and then I can hear a water gurgle, but it never ran on the floor or anything like that.
Cleaning the filter is easy enough and the remote works well and is handy to have on the nightstand. I like to raise the temp to maybe 72 while I am gone for the day at work and it's going to be hot. Having the remote by the door makes it easy. Oh and one review mentioned the lights are pretty bright. Now that is a fact. Noise I can deal with, but the lights on the unit light up the fricking room. I ended up putting some white tape over them. I can still see what's going on, but it does not keep me awake.
The unit itself is very solid and well made. There is nothing flimsy about the construction. It's easy to roll around even on low pile carpet. It is heavy to take up a flight of stairs on your own, but once there relocating it to another room is not bad. The window kit comes in a couple of pieces so it can be used in different sized windows. So make sure to keep the pieces if you ever plan to use it in different rooms. You'll see what I mean if you buy one.
I think that about covers it. In my opinion this is a well made AC unit. Solid materials used throughout. I was very pleased when I took it out of the box. Oh and dI put it together without ever looking at the directions.
1) The controls are simple and easy to navigate. I set the humidity level to 50% and let the unit take over. I have a hose connected to mine so I no longer have to dump water buckets. This makes it a maintenance free unit with exception to cleaning the filter once a year (it never has been dirty).
Very simple controls on the top that are easy to navigate through:
> Fan controls (normal or turbo)
> Filter reset button
> Continuous run or Automatic control
> And then you have the humidity % desired arrows (up/down)
2) It turns back on after losing power. We lose power a lot living out in the country so it was nice to see this unit power back up and get back to service on its own. I didn’t have to babysit it or check up on it.
3) The unit is good at its job. This dehumidifier sits in a 2 stall older garage. I store some of my muscle cars there and without one of these units…it smells musty with a hint of mildew. 2-3 days of running this, the smell is decent and humidity levels are within tolerable limits (from 80% to 40%).
4) It is energy star and efficient. The garage I have is at one of my properties in town so I know what kind of power it is consuming by looking at my electrical bill. The building is used for storage so the only energy consumed is from a dehumidifier.
> Standard monthly bill (without any appliances running): $12.
> Monthly bill running the previous GE dehumidifier before this one: $75-80.
> Monthly bill running this Keystone dehumidifier: $20-22.
5) It is reasonably quiet. If I’m in the same room with it…I know it is running but it isn’t overly loud. It is about the same noise level as our window-mounted air conditioner.
All in all, I’m known as a thrifty guy that watches every penny but I would buy this again. The unit is a rock solid, well built appliance that doesn’t require a lot of money to run (especially handling the high humidity levels that it’s in). I am very happy with my decision and you would as well. Give it a try!
I hope my review helps…
Pros:
-Works well and collects a lot water
-Removable compartment is easy to pull out, empty, and put back in.
-No complicated buttons, pretty straightforward.
-Lasted almost 9 years (when using for 3-4 months per year)
Cons:
-bulky, difficult to move around
-the removable compartment can get mold inside if you don't pour out the water every night and let it air dry upside down.
-Removable compartment can be difficult to clean inside as there are a lot of little grooves and corners.
-Loud
-Probably has increased our energy bills.
