This is the best weed eater EVER and great value for the price! Let me provide some context. I'm a 56 year old woman, 5'3. I live on a natural heavily wooded lot - no grass, leaves, wild prickly vines, privet, lots of small branches, twigs, very heavy use for my cutter. I struggle mightily with gas powered machines. They are very heavy for me and are next to impossible to start - my arms aren't long enough. I have to put the machine on the ground and stand on a step to be able to pull the cord all the way and have difficulty pulling it properly to get it started. Then, if it dies out in the woods, I have to walk back to a place where I can elevate myself above the machine - a royal pain and after a while, I lose strength to start the blasted thing. Totally exhausting after just a short period of time. I never seem to be able to find a comfortable length and am constantly adjusting as it is just too long. Very fatiguing to say the least.

In comparison, the GreenWorks is so amazingly light and of course, being electric, starts at a press of the handle. I have very little fatigue and the adjustment lengths are just perfect for me. No struggling to change handle orientation or open head. I especially like the swivel feature and the hook in the handle to hold the cord. Rather than bump the head to extend the line, you simply turn the unit on, then off, then on again. It's a little tricky, but once you figure it out, is really easy. If the line is caught inside and won't extend, there is a release button on the head that I can actually work. And I can take the head off without a struggle but yet everything is firm and tight and snaps easily back into place.

The GreenWorks cuts beautifully with minimal snags, and has increased tremendously my running/cutting time! More time cutting, less time fiddling to get it adjusted or to run. I've learned that it even cuts taller privet by lifting to waist height (which I never would be able to do with a gas powered unit), cutting top to bottom all the way to the ground. The GreenWorks runs consistently and my cutting time has increased so much compared to a gas powered unit. Line snags are minimal, and most of the time are the result of tangles created by me when twining the line. What a workhorse this little trimmer is! It appears to be very well made, was packaged nicely and arrived on time.

I can see the possibility that a taller person may find the length uncomfortable as it seems you would have to bend over if it's not long enough for you. But it is the perfect length for me and so easy to adjust the length longer or shorter, depending upon what I'm cutting. I used the unit with (2) of those orange 100 ft extension cords from Home Depot with no trouble.

I am so happy with this unit that I actually look forward to cutting. And so easy to get it up and running, I use it more than I ever used my gas powered unit, which was such a hassle. I've had the unit for about a month and used maybe 10 hours so far with no issues at all.

I highly recommend this unit, especially for anyone who struggles with gas powered units. Quick, easy, light, so comfortable to use and runs beautifully and extremely affordably priced. It cuts everything I've thrown at it beautifully and consistently. Time will tell how long the unit will last, especially in my harsher environment. I would purchase this unit again and again and am totally sold. I would even go so far as to say that if for some reason it doesn't last, I wouldn't bat an eye in purchasing it a couple of times a summer, since it is so affordable and easy to use - a real workhorse! Did I say how much I love this cutter? :)

3.0 out of 5 starsStill looking for the perfect trimmer
Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2018
I've had this trimmer/edger for a month and used it twice. It replaced a Toro that cost nearly twice as much and burned out after just 3 years. I hated the Toro - it was heavy, the head pivot mechanism was poorly designed, the autofeed didn't work, and it had a thumb operated safety that was difficult to pull. This trimmer is not as powerful, but is lighter and has a better pivoting mechanism. However, now that I don't have it, I definitely see the value of a safety. The Toro safety was poorly designed, but I have already accidentally triggered this trimmer twice (once whacking my ankle!). So, some sort of safety would be good. Also, the autofeed on this trimmer seems to work too well. That is to say, it seems wasteful - feeding out trimmer line when it doesn't need to. I never thought I'd say it, but I miss the bump-to-feed system on my really old B&D. The shield on this trimmer seems a little too narrow - I have been hit by flying pebbles a few times. Lastly, the gray handle is really uncomfortable - it is too thin and has a groove in the bottom that cuts into my fingers. Luckily, I was able to take the handle off of the Toro and put it on this trimmer. It isn't a perfect fit for the diameter of the pole, but I made it work.

Good: Powerful enough, good pivot mechanism, autofeed works (too well?), lighter than the Toro
Bad: No safety, wastes trimmer line, narrow shield, uncomfortable gray handle.

I hate to buy products that have not been reviewed by other Amazonians, which I have come to rely on when making purchases, but I took the risk this time - and I am glad I did and I am happy to write a review.

I replaced a 15 inch Weedeater with the 13 inch Greenworks trimmer. I got about 60 uses out of the Weedeather before it ceased to function. It was too large and too heavy and bulky for my yard where I have a lot of fences and landscaping rocks to trim around. The fact that the trimmer has TWO trim lines is also very important because the string lasts longer and the two lines cut about twice as fast.

The Weedeater's string advance system never worked well - had to turn the unit over and pull out the string by hand. BUT THE GREENWORKS TRIMMER LINE ADVANCE ACTUALLY WORKS!!! Just release the ON trigger for two seconds and it advances automatically (you will hear it click). I wear the the strings down really fast trimming around rocks, so I have to click it off and on several times to get the string out to full length, but that takes about 5 seconds. I think the unit will not use (waste) as much string as the Weedeater. The 4 amp motor has sufficient power for fast trimming.

The unit was double boxed for shipping. It has an adjustable length handle, which is still a bit short for someone who is 6'4", but it works well. It was very easy to assemble - about 10 minutes. I would estimate it cut my trim time from 1.5 hours to about 45 minutes.

It would be great if Amazon also carried the refill spools of line.

I bought two of these 5/14, received them 5/20, and today is 6/2. This would be 5 stars but one of the trimmers died after only about 10 hours of HARD use (over 1/2 acre of tall weeds). KEEP READING. Why not 1 star? Because I love these anyway. In fact I just bought two more (they are cheap, eh?). One trimmer costs the same as two hours of hired help to do the same job. So I got 8 free hours.

I'm definitely a Weed Wacking Wonder Woman and have been taming acres using weed wackers for about 25 years. I KNOW I'm asking too much of this trimmer which is probably meant for a suburban short driveway, not acres and acres of 2-3 foot tall grasses and weeds like star thistle and such. However I am 5'3", 116#, and almost 70 years old. Even I, at 5'3", extend the handle fully. I love the light weight! I can go for hours at a time. However that was probably what did it in as I think I burnt out the engine. Next time I'll take coffee breaks and let the trimmer cool off, and I'd recommend you consider that option also.

I didn't try to return the dead trimmer because I would have to pay shipping (according to the manual) and these weed whips are almost in the 'disposable' catagory. I had a stronger/bigger GreenWorks trimmer which lasted about 1 year, but I got blisters and sore muscles due to the weight. This smaller trimmer brings down the weeds just as well as the larger trimmer and is much easier to control and use.

Our gas trimmer, although powerful, is much too large and heavy for me. I prefer electric for weight, quick starts/stops, no fumes, and less noise even though we are completely off-the-grid (we make our own electricity). This weed wacker is very very effective as far as cutting through the fast growing mountain weeds. It is also quieter than my larger/older GreenWorks trimmer. We have a couple of months of heavy weed whipping each spring to prepare for fire season. I've tried battery run trimmers and they just aren't tough enough - using four batteries or more I can barely do a 40' x 40' dog run. Battery whips just don't have enough power for my needs.

This trimmer has a handle which when squeezed powers the trimmer. You let go and it goes off. I do not find the handle difficult to use or very tiring. I do feel that the little hook which secures the extension cord is too small for a good outdoor extension cord.

Truthfully, since I have no intention of returning the dead trimmer, I did take the thing apart and my husband and I tested the wiring for the switch and it was fine.

Well I hope this helps somebody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought Used...Love It So Far. Couple Of Small Issues
Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2014
Verified Purchase
I bought this used from the Amazon warehouse. I have a small yard and I was surprised at how much bigger and more expensive the trimmers had gotten since the last time I bought one. The used one from the warehouse was under $30 and included free shipping. It arrived in perfect condition, including one double spool of line already installed, and a spare that is full. As far as its operation, it is working perfectly for me. It seemed a little heavy for its size at first but I quickly got used to it. The auto feed is working perfectly and I like the feel of it during operation. And finally, this thing may be on the cheaper, smaller side, but trust me, its darn powerful enough to take down anything most people will have in mind for it. I had no problem cutting down anything I tried it on. It was very impressive in that sense...

As far as any negatives to it, there are a couple of small issues. One is the fact that even though the shaft on this thing is adjustable, it really doesn't get very long. I'm not a tall guy and I still have to bend over some to use it. Not really uncomfortable for me, but it could be an issue on a tall person. Also, even though the auto feed is working fine for me, I have mixed feelings about it. It feeds new line every time it you start it or restart it. Whether it needs new line or not. This is rather wasteful to me, and I have a tendency to walk around with it on to save line. Not really that much of an inconvenience, but sometimes the old bump system doesn't seem so bad. Some of the other reviewers here talk about the auto feed system jamming and having to pull the line out manually once in a while. But in all fairness, that happened to me all the time with my old bump style system too, so I can't hold it against this one with its auto feed feature..

In conclusion, when it comes to smaller trimmers these days, they have unfortunately gone the way of the biggest and baddest in many respects, as well as gas models really taking a bigger part of market. Not much to choose from in the smaller, less powerhouse models now. I have no need for either a big trimmer, nor do I want to mess with a gas one that I have never had any luck with in the past anyway. This Greenworks model is quality made, works very well, and is one of the only real choices for a smaller unit that still has some respectable power to it. I got mine for a bargain price used, but feel that it is worth every bit of the money they are asking for it new. I love mine and highly recommend it... : )

PS: This weeder takes a double line spool, that is currently unavailable, and according to the description is also "discontinued by manufacturer". Unfortunate for its so much easier to just install a pre loaded spool. However you can still buy the .065 line and wind it yourself. That's what I did for years with my old trimmer, and will with this..

5.0 out of 5 stars Light, Fast, Easy to Use, For a Great Price,...UPDATE
Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2016

...What is not to love?

It's remarkably light and works extremely fast. I cover a huge area of weed/grass area in no time. Clean up is a breeze as well.

Highly recommend.

I researched quite a bit before deciding. I wanted to get away from battery operated, rechargeable, and/or gas operated. Using an electric cord can be hazardous and you have to get the right kind for power equipment, 16-gauge. I’ve read other reviews stating a lower gauge is OK. I would recommend adhering to the cord type recommended by the manufacturer. I use a 100’ long cord- again, best to not exceed this length or attach multiple cords to form one super long length. Be sure to attach the power cord as indicated, through the handle and using the loop to secure the cord. Use the white loop balancing and guiding handle to carry or reposition the weed eater. It's too easy to engage the power button otherwise, which could cause you to inadvertently start the weed eater. Ensure the power cord is disconnected for performing maintenance and/or cleaning. Simply commit to exercising proper safety.

I also watched a video for this product and it explains how to best cut weeds, esp. high, long, or difficult to cut. Approach from the top, angle down towards the front, and work down to the ground. As a result, I don't have any of the issues described in other reviews, particularly of the weed eater stopping, clogging, or long weed pieces wrapping themselves around the spool. Around the base of trees, keep the front angled down to prevent the cord from nicking the tree trunk. Go at a slower speed in areas where there are trees or other growth you don't want damaged- this weed eater still performs extremely well at slower speeds.

UPDATE, 5/28/2016: Have used this many times now. Very pleased. I discovered I am able to cut through thick growth, to include woody growth. The trick to not getting anything stuck in the trimmer is to move quickly, which short cutting movements. A breeze.

Ruth in Seattle
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Trimmer! (One Caveat)
Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2014

I just finished using my Greenworks String Trimmer for the first time on an area virtually inaccessible for my push mower (in addition, some of the grass was a foot tall thanks to Seattle's recent rain and warmer temperatures and my mower would have just flattened the grass).

I'm quite pleased with this trimmer. It replaces a Craftsman trimmer which, after only 5 or 6 uses in the last 3 years, lost a spring in the spool area and was unusable (a replacement part would have cost around $30 plus with shipping).

The Greenworks trimmer was very easy to assemble and to use. Not heavy or cumbersome and I was delighted I could find a comfortable position while using it (unlike the Craftsman). The line advancement was so easy and worked perfectly It seems to be quite powerful, and it made short work of my burgeoning meadow. And did I mention the great price?

There is one caveat I'd like to pass along: I set the trimmer down while I moved the cord out of the way before starting to trim in a new area and, without thinking, I picked it (the trimmer) up by the handle...of course the handle houses the power switch trigger...and it immediately started running. It was only on for a second and no harm was done, but I can see how that could potentially be very dangerous. I won't be doing that again(!) and just wanted to pass this along to other users.

I'm delighted with this trimmer and recommend it..

1.0 out of 5 stars A great 4 Amp 13" Corded way to waste $40
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2014

You know what's nice about this product? The trimmer comes loaded with a single spool of GreenWorks brand dual-line string. When the trimmer is loaded with said spool of string, it actually works well, and is easy to use.

That sounds great, right? "That's what I want it to do! I guess I should buy it!"

Yeah, no, don't do that. Let me tell you why you shouldn't buy this trimmer (and why you should consider never buying anything from GreenWorks ever again.)

In their infinite wisdom, the manufacturer included an owner's manual with this product - a manual that proclaims numerous times that you should acquire ONLY GreenWorks brand replacement parts, or else! As annoying as that can feel, I typically prefer this approach anyway, since the manufacturer replacement parts typically cause the least headache, since they are designed for the equipment in question.

So, you go on Amazon to buy the replacement spool/string for this little device. Amazon suggests a three-pack of string spools when you come to this item's page. DON'T BUY IT. DON'T YOU DARE. If you do, you'll be sorely disappointed, as that pack is a replacement for a number of DIFFERENT models, but not THIS model. Nope. The only replacement GreenWorks string on Amazon isn't even the right type (single thread, as opposed to the dual thread this model uses.)

GREAT.

Don't bother checking out Lowes and Home Depot and whatever other store you can think of - the replacement string isn't there, either.

Next step: check the manufacturer's website. Whoops, no replacement string there, either.

A little more searching of the internet reveals that GreenWorks discontinued the replacement string.

THAT'S RIGHT! THEY DISCONTINUED THE REPLACEMENT PARTS THAT THEY DEMAND YOU BUY FROM THEM.

I laughed. I literally had a ridiculous laughing fit. GreenWorks is still selling this model, both here on Amazon, and on THEIR OWN WEBSITE. They are SERIOUSLY continuing to produce a model of equipment that you will be SOL in terms of using after the ONE provided spool of string runs out.

It's a nice little catch-22 they've got, where you have to void your warranty by using other manufacturer's replacement parts, or never use the thing again because you can't get their own stuff.

So...definitely DON'T buy THIS item. And if you're smart, you'll avoid a manufacturer who pulls these kind of shenanigans.
