How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

It works perfectly so far. Just had it two days but works great. Easy to set up. Got it for my mom. Highly recommended for older people to watch movies- not everyone has Netflix/wifi/etc.

It's a thoughtful and relatively inexpensive gift for low-tech family member! Along with a few sets of dvds- I bought a few four packs for $4 each!

Anyways, it was simple to set up and works fine. Arrived stupidly fast, too.

1.0 out of 5 starsDead HDMI imputs

I purchased THREE of these Sony DVD players, because they had HDMI inputs. I have several vacation rentals and one of our satellite providers has decided we need to not use the HDMI inputs, use the component inputs instead for the satellite receiver... No problem, so I bought three of DVD players, all with HDMI inputs.
I was in no hurry to install them, not that I have tried the window to return them has passed by a few weeks. That's my fault, what is NOT my fault that not one, not two but ALL THREE have non functioning HDMI inputs, not one works. Thinking I must have a tv problem I set them aside and got a new TV, they still will not work thru the HDMI input, they will work using the component inputs, but I have to us those inputs for the TV. I purchased a cheap DVD player at the local discount store today to be sure of the problem, and it works just fine using the HDMI input. SO my recommendation is to NOT buy these units, its a rip off. If you want one with a non functioning HDMI input I will give you up to 3 if you will pay the
shipping, they have never played a single disc beyond testing them to find the problem. AVOID these people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent DVD Player

This Sony DVD player is obviously a great price. It is very compact which I love. I like that it doesn't take up much room and is so lightweight. After a couple months it has seemed to have a slight problem. I'm not 100% sure it is the fault of the player, but it doesn't seem to happen any other time. When watching a DVD we will occasionally lose our viewing and sound for a few seconds. It is still playing though because when it comes back on it is a little ahead. So we have to go back "rewinding" ita bit so we don't miss anything. For us personally it hasn't been a huge thing and was worth the hassle for the low price. However, if you want something you can totally rely on to work just as desired you may want to spend a little more on a better quality DVD player or at least keep your box in case you need to return it.

This DVD player worked perfectly! I bought it to project my AtmostFearfx Ghostly Apparations DVD in my garage window. I didn't want anything too expensive because my garage gets VERY hot with the hot Southern California weather and I wasn't sure if it would get ruined if I ran it each night all month long. This DVD player held up great! The picture was very clear even when projected at a large size in my window. Great product for a great price!

Nice, small unit. Works as well as expected with a great quality upscaled DVD image. Full HD 1080p with an older TV that can be finicky when connecting. As compared to our newish HD cable box which has trouble syncing with TV and only connects at 480p, it shows how much better the Sony DVD box is at HD sync.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good.

I suppose that electronics are a class of devices that we expect will work perfectly. That is, no problems = average performance. Well, this unit (refurbished) is half the regular price and I've have no problems after 2 weeks (16 hours) of use.

It replaced a Philips multi-region that died after 16 months. After the Philips, I bought a multi-region (refurbished) through Samsung. It wouldn't even play Region 1 (USA). Called Samsung and the techs said my model # will never play in the States, but it was advertised at Amazon (and on the product box) to be multi-region and "region free".

So, I have given up on multi-region, there are too many things that can go wrong. (I lived overseas for 23 years and learned a bit of the 'games'. One problem, for example, is that multi-region units are shipped all over the world--some to developing countries where the machine will not be All Region unless the local technician at the retail shop takes it in the back room and "fixes" it. I think some of these wind up being re-routed to the States by greedy, clever, third-worlders shop owners, who have no idea of the technical issues. They simply see an opportunity to beat the system and make a few bucks on the side. Thus, my guess is that it's impossible for a manufacturer to totally control what country their units wind up for sale.

I only have a few region 2 dvds, so I'll forego seeing those and just buy a basic, new or refurbished region 1 unit every couple of years. My local lending library now has many of my region 2's anyway, like many of the Kurosawa films.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy From This Company-Read "Fine Print" First!
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2015

Do Not Buy From this Company! If you read the company's policies by clicking on its name. Though its a Sony Product, look for where Amazon identifies the actual seller "electronics 101 deals." I made the mistake of purchasing a "refurbished Sony DVP-SR510H" in August. I bought refurbished because the DVD player was to be used for a singular purpose-to play the DVDs made from a professional videographer's extensive video of my Mother's 90th Birthday "bash" of over 100 friends and relatives from all over the country. Before we received the DVDs I tried it on a new DVD collection of the 10th season of the TV show "Supernatural". I had to stop the player after the first 10 mins. because I was afraid I was damaging the disc. The player would cause the video to freeze, stutter, and seem to disconnect from the TV, showing a "snowy" screen, then the video would come back on for a few seconds. I removed the disc to check it for damage but couldn't see any. Suffice it to say, the same thing occurred when we received Mom's highly anticipated birthday video. Fortunately, I was able to "save the day" by running the DVDs through my laptop's DVD drive (which I also used to test my "Supernatural" collection with perfect results) So, its not a CD/DVD quality problem. Granted, I bought a "refurbished" player to save money, but for the player not to function at all wasn't expected.
I didn't use the player until more than 30 days from when I bought in August. That's why ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING FROM THIS SELLER must click on it and get to its "Policies" tab. First, if the player is defective, you have 7 days to return it. Otherwise it has the typical 30-day return/refund period. Of course I was out of luck because I didn't even use the player until 30 days had passed. And let's assume you can somehow meet their return/refund policy, be advised. Unlike Amazon, YOU pay all return shipping fees PLUS 15% RESTOCKING FEE.
Some have obviously had good luck with this seller. And since its selling "name brand" items they may not have had to look at the seller's warranty, refund, etc. practices. Hopefully they'll never have to. But if you're buying refurbished, stay away from this seller. I essentially bought an approximately 40$ brick and a "refurbished" brick at that.

It works, I don’t watch many DVD’s but I did just binge watch a show I have on DVD and this thing did the job. Had no issues at all. I used the HDMI input and no issues. From the other reviews it sounds like this might be hit or miss? I have no complaints, though. I’m considering buying another for my home gym so I can watch my workout DVD’s.
