As is typical with these types of games the number of skills, weapons and coils were bewilderingly large so I only made use of a few of them. You could spend the rest of your life figuring out all these features to optimise your game play. There were a few software bugs, but not enough to spoil the game. I managed to crash the game once when in the Zenith base navigating a duct by clicking maps and trying to look at the map for the floor above. There was also a bug with the weapon wheel which was very erratic and difficult to select a weapon without it bouncing around other weapons – a search online revealed the cure to be to change the selection speed from slowest to normal which cured the fault. Another bug was with the quest to fly to the top of the mountain. Having got there the four pieces of armour were missing! I checked online footage for this quest and the armour wasn’t where it was supposed to be, so I had to abandon that quest. Another minor glitch occurred after finishing one quest (forgotten which) and I was supposed to return to base but the map wouldn’t show me the base or the track of how to get there! The square box against the quest to “show on map” was also missing. As I didn’t remember its location I just had to carry on with other quests. It eventually reappeared on the map so was able to return.
I paid full price for this game and it was worth every penny. Now it is done, my fingers can have a well earned rest. Thank you for making the game fun and suitable for people with less than perfect healthy hands by including story level difficulty.
Horizon is very much a Sony studio doing the "new thing" of open-world game-play interspersed with epic, cinematic set-pieces. Aiming for the scale and freedom of non-linearity, with enough bombastic curated moments so as to move things along when that open design gets less compelling over time.
Many of its features have been bloated beyond merely making bigger environments, and it now has looter-shooter mechanics padding it out with tedious grind. Every new weapon you get (and it's far more than you really need or are likely to use) requires upgrading several times for negligible differences, and it becomes a chore keeping on top of these developments.
The same goes for your combat skills, which have all been stripped down to their most basic levels of functionality just so that you build them back up to the level they were at in the previous game. As an example: you healed fairly quickly before, but now they've decided to slow it right down so as to make it more "strategic" and "challenging", and it takes upgrading to make it faster.
Almost every system has had this tinkering and none of the changes are an improvement from what was there before. Which is a shame, because the core action loop is still really enjoyable. The actual combat here is quite entertaining, yet the game bogs it down in bloated "rpg-lite" guff and boss-battles that are clumsy challenges.
Your character is responsive, the weapons are visceral and combat / traversal elements are fun. The story is pretty epic and well-told. In many regards this does a really good job, but there's a huge amount of unnecessary things added to give some very rough edges and on a harder difficulty level these design elements don't feel optional to pursue.
Technically its stunning for PS4, and delivers on spectacular sights and action, with an engaging narrative. I enjoyed my time with it, and have finished it, yet their attempts at fleshing out the content weren't even necessary and ended up somewhat counter-productive. For all that they added it didn't make the game any better, and it is in some ways worse than the first game.
If you didn't like that then its highly likely you won't like this. If you did enjoy it then I think you'll like this, but there's clear signs IMO of the series starting to go off the rails into Assassins Creed levels of padding just for the sake of more content.
