1) This is a slow burn type of game that requires patience, discipline, and taking it one step at a time.
This isn’t the type of game you can burn through in a few days or a week and get to new game plus.
There is a lot in this game that is frankly a huge bargain given how much you get in each area. And you get maps. MAPS! Do you know how much time that saves and you can add markers and fast travel. Listen, as a SoulsBorne player this is so helpful.
Did I mention how big this game is? You could easily spend a week in one area (Limgrave) just exploring, getting weapons, joining convents, achieving a lot of stuff, speaking to different NPCs, and doing the bosses here and there to practice and level up.
There are rest/check points literally everywhere - known as “graces” some call them bonfires and they act like them pretty much.
One thing of the many things I truly appreciate is that if you die to a boss you can choose to return outside the boss room checkpoint instead of goings straight back to the “grace/bonfire”. That has saved my bacon so many times.
Now - if you are truly stuck and feel overwhelmed or just think wtf is going on I only have an hour to play - that’s perfectly fine - I do highly recommend VaatiVidya’s “get overpowered early in elden ring” video - it contains zero spoilers and is a huge quick and easy helpful guide to getting the basics to make the game easier and more enjoyable. So you don’t feel like you’re wasting hours and hours getting nowhere and constantly. There is no excuse to complain with there are billions of helpful guides and aids around.
Sidenote: We get a horse. We get beautiful life saving Torrent - can you imagine the nightmare of not having such a fun easy method of traveling around? How much more could you ask for.
And we can climb buildings and mountains - even do bosses (like dragons) with Torrent. It’s wonderful.
Sidenote 2: The crafting in this game is so easy - you basically never run out of “humanity/embers” so you can summon help whenever. All you have to do is pick some flowers. One single flower and craft it into the summoning item.
Also you can craft buffs like poison, bleed, fire, electricity, holy and new horrors like scarlet rot (shudders), a soporific buff which is suppose to make enemies I guess weaker in stamina and such? Because they don’t technically fall asleep - it would be funny though if in mid boss battle with “Godrick” in his mid tantrum phase got smacked with some soporific grease to the face and went to have forty winks.
2) There is a story - there are many stories in fact - it’s a multilayer open world game with TONS of different characters with little stories and quests here and there - some of which fit into the main story.
And the main story is very easy to follow given the fact you have an NPC at the roundtable hold (think firelink shrine or hunter’s dream) that tells you the places you have to go and the bosses you have to vanquish. In any order you feel like doing - and there is an endless way of getting runes to level up your character and your weapons.
There are factions and convents you can join - each with their own story and your choices have consequences, often they can influence game progression, and the fate of characters.
3) There is no difficulty setting and there never was in any of the SoulsBorne games. The only way to get the difficulty higher was to go to new game plus. The only difficult part in these games is that they require using your brain and being very very patient.
4) I won’t compare this to any of the four souls games, or bloodbore, but perhaps a little to Sekiro in that it like that game requires a lot patience and discipline.
**By the way, if you are stuck on a boss you can 1) summon phantoms to help you or 2) be a phantom and practice without losing anything - get some ruins and level up.
The other part that is super neat are spirit summons - that you can upgrade! Imagine, I can summon a pack of level 7 wolves to go after a boss or any enemy whilst I’m on Torrent. Doesn’t have to be wolves, it can Jellyfish! A gladiator, a bunch of undead soldiers, a giant eagle! All you need is some FP and you’re good to go.
5) Graphics are subjective, for me as long as it’s artistically consistent then I am an pretty chill kind of gal, ya know. Texture pop ins aside. Given how massive this game is - it’s perfectly fine. I’m not looking for cinematic stuff here - though the cut scenes are gorgeous.
Personal opinion - the different flora and fauna look absolutely gorgeous - the ocean and the sun, the night sky with all the stars and the moon.
Downside is, again personally, the face presets could be a lot better as they still require us to be in the “character creation section” for an hour trying to make our character not look like a duck faced potato on legs. But I digress, stick a helmet on and you are good to go. And you can change your appearance and even your character name in game - even reallocate your stats.
Random points to note: The OST is amazing! It’s stunning, one of my favorite things about it. Also, there are some creatures - like the bats that sing beautiful opera aria that will have you leaving messages such as “listen carefully, in short don’t you dare (kill them)”. Giants that sing lullabies that are lovely to listen to.
Some of the NPCs are fascinating - and beautifully designed - especially Ranni - her whole outfit is a mood and a half.
There is one boss, that gives you the ability to summon 6/7 NPC phantoms to help along with normal summoning of phantoms.
Every game is subjective if you don’t like this game that’s fine - if you do like Elden ring then that’s fine, too.
Cheers & may the good blood guide you.
