Was quite surprised at the power of these AMAZON BASICS speakers. They are pretty heavy weight, which is nice to make them stable, a good shape, so they aren't too bulky on my desktop, have a subtle, yet cool blue glow, which I've never thought I'd care about but surprisingly do enjoy - especially at night, and are surprisingly powerful with good full range of sound, at a very reasonable price! The volume control being on the power cord is a bit cumbersome, which is was on one of the speakers, but I can deal with that. They plug into a USB for power and into my monitor for amplification, which means I had to dig out a cube since I didn't have a free USB port anywhere else, but other than that, I think they are AWESOME! If you're considering them, don't hesitate to buy!

I set out to purchase these speakers because I didn't want to assault my ears anymore all work day with headphone/earbuds anymore. I also wanted:
1) It to be powered by one of the available USB ports on my laptop and not have to have a wall power supply since my desk is cluttered as it is with other wires. This uses a USB A plug, so the power levels will be low. At 2W per speaker, don't expect miracles with bass.
2) Compact footprint since my desk is already cluttered and these are about the most compact ones available.
3) Be a sonic upgrade from my tinny, harsh-sounding LG Gram 17" laptop speakers. I didn't want a single-piece soundbar, but two separate speakers that I could space apart to the left and right of my laptop.
4) Not spend much.

I'm so happy with the purchase of these super affordable speakers. If you have a high-quality music source and a DSP/equalizer app like DTS:X Ultra (free download) that you're willing to spend seconds setting, the sonic experience is excellent as long as you're not greedy for bass. There's nice detail and there's lush mellowness akin to my Denon HEOS 7 and none of the harshness of my laptop speakers. The styling and bonus mood lighting are a real bonus that they didn't have to do but did.

These speakers are best for talk, dramas, classical, orchestral, not-bass-heavy rock heard at modest to moderate volumes in a quiet room. These speakers are not good if you want to hear bass-heavy songs like some EDM or hip-hop or hear rumbling action in shows/movies. The lower bound frequency range is 80 Hz, so it won't capture the deepest bass. Upping the bass in the EQ won't help either. With bass-heavy songs, turning up the volume gets you a numb and anemic representation of what the rumble/thump is supposed to be. If you enjoy lots of bass with still a compact package, you're better off with a USB-C style mini-speaker like the Creative Pebble may be a better choice, and the v3 is about twice the price of these Amazon Basics speakers. If you're not bass-hungry, the low-end will be fine. THINK OF THESE SPEAKERS AS DELIVERING SOUND THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE CASE FOR THE FACTORY LAPTOP SPEAKERS.

There is no bluetooth connectivity, but you want a headphone jack wired connectivity for best results anyways.

SUGGESTION: On a typical desk the sound is aimed at tummy level. When I angle these speakers toward my ears, the mid-high frequency sonic experience improved significantly. This is no surprise since it's well known high frequencies audio travel in beams while low frequencies radiate in all directions. The Creative Pebble speakers are angled up. If for a couple to a few bucks more, they could incorporate an angle adjuster or just have a fixed tilted angle, that would be awesome.

4-STARS OVERALL if under $17. 3-STARS IF BETWEEN $17-$22.

treble and sibilance high, otherwise surprisingly neutral OK sound

Treble is strong on these speakers and sibilant sounds (s's and t's, e.g.) are very strong, so if you are sensitive to that (as I am) then perhaps these are not a good choice. But otherwise they have a surprisingly good and neutral sound, and probably a big improvement over built-in laptop speakers. If it weren't for the strong sibilance, I'd say they'd be very good speakers for talking head videos. Maybe sibilance can be EQ'd down (I don't have EQ software so I don't know). Bass is, of course, not at all strong, but surprising good for such small and inexpensive speakers; be sure to have realistic expectations about that. Also, speakers have heavy base plates and so they won't be sliding around your desk. They also have stupid blue LED lights coming out of the base, which can't be turned off. Note that they have both USB and analog plugs, but USB is for power only; sound must come from analog source.

Big Bang for the Buck

Ordered these speakers this morning so I don't have to always wear my headset and get a heat headache on my PC. Simply put these little speakers, there is no way Amazon makes a cent off of these speakers for $20 CAD. There is heft to the little speakers and a quality feel.

Others have pointed to the blue LED being annoying or the branding on top (some reviewer actually broke out "Do Better Amazon!" over the decal on top).

I game in a near dark room and the LEDs are not even close to being over the top; I would notice in a dark room. They are subdued and tasteful and add a nice little ambient light on my desk.

The branding? I personally do not see an issue with it. I have placed a picture of it beside my gaming pad for comparison and to me, to call this font size or logo out for being too large is simply being too sensitive as a consumer (but that's my opinion.=).

Others have complained about the cord length. I use this on a PC on the corners of the desk and the tower on the floor and there is lots of length in the cords; the speakers sit comfortably apart about 1m.

I did have one glitch in that I intended to plug them into the USB hub on my MSI monitor to save the cable run to my tower and Windows 11 promptly told me that the USB hub in my monitor didn't have enough power to drive the speakers. No problem, as I said the cord length to the tower on the floor wasn't an issue. And hey, it just means that these little gems pack a lot of power.

The sound quality is crystal clear, it is really quite amazing but don't be expecting bass. Treat them for what they are: excellent priced speakers that deliver exceptional sound for the price and not a bazooka tube subwoofer.

Lastly, the size is perfect. I have a small desk and they take up very little space. Verdict? For $20, don't even bother with another budget speaker. These may be labelled as "Amazon Basics" but they are far from basic.

My 13 year-old son needed a set of small speakers for his PC gaming setup. He's no audiophile and just wanted something better than the tinny built-in speaker he was using. A quick bit of searching and these Amazon basic speakers came up at a very reasonable price and were well reviewed.

They arrived promptly, via Prime shipping and the unboxing was a pleasant surprise in that these little speakers have quite a bit of weight to them. They feel expensive and well made. Certinaly better than some low-end speakers I've handled in the past. They look great, I opted for the silver version. The blue lighting underneath adding a touch of extra atmosphere when dark.

The sound re-production was as good as you would hope for a speak of this size. With no separate sub-woofer, the bass was always going to be lacking, but to be fair to these Amazon Basic speakers, they sound brilliant. I genuinely don't think you could get any better for this price, or even double the price. 5 out of 5 stars for me. They look, and more importantly, sound fantastic for the money.
