Product Description
“Castaway, you should know the truth.” As Link, you awaken in a strange land away from Hyrule, where animals talk and monsters roam. To uncover the truth behind your whereabouts and rouse the legendary Wind Fish, explore Koholint Island and all its trap-ridden dungeons, reimagined in stunning detail for this new release of one of the most beloved The Legend of Zelda games. Along the way, you’ll meet a hilarious assortment of charming characters to which you’ll never want to say goodbye. In this new version of the game, the classic soundtrack has been reborn with new arrangements, and now you can equip more items at once, review key conversations, and navigate the map in new ways. Try your hand at the renovated mini-games to earn dolls based on the Super Mario series or Chamber Stones. These unusual stones can be used to arrange your own Chamber Dungeons; each one is a puzzle in and of itself. Place chambers from dungeons found throughout the game on a series of objective-based grids. Where should the bosses go? How do you get from the entrance to the stairwell? They’re your dungeons, so arrange them however you see fit. To earn more Chamber Stones, you must conquer the main adventure’s dungeons and mini-games or tap any amiibo featuring a The Legend of Zelda character to unlock Chambers exclusive to amiibo. 1993-2019 Nintendo. The game map (in most areas) is no longer grid based meaning each area is not a sperate "room." When you open the map, you can place pins for points of interest that you can't reach at the moment. Like in the origianl game, you start at the last enterance of an area wher we you previously saved. If you fall into a pit, you return right to it rather than where you entered that area. There are more warp points as well. Also, after you receive a certain item you can warp to these areas at anytime you are not in a dungeon.
The sword and shield have their own dedicated buttons so you no longer have to pause and witch out these items. This is also true for the peguses boots and power bracelet items. There are now bottles you can use to catch faeries but unlike other Zelda titles, you'll need to set them free before your hearts deplete or it's game over. Other new items include the seashell finder and figurines that can decorate certain areas.
The gameplay is a little different. For example, enemies carrying shields need to be stunned before you can deal damage to them. Because you use the joystick, you can use items in eight directions. The trendy game and fishing pond are also slightly different than the original game. Another new feature is the ability to see past events via Memories on the menu screen.
For the most part all characters keep the same duologue. A new charater, Dampé, makes an appearance for a Zelda Maker style dungeon where you can earn items. When you need a hint, you can call Urlia from the telephone boths scatters across the map. While the characters' diolouge are short they keep the same charm.
There is not much to the story which is not a bad thing. Your goal is to wake the Wind Fish and your quest requires you to find the intsruments hidden in each dungeon. In doing so, you have to defeat the nightmares. The dungeons are basically the same as they were on the Gameboy but like mentioned before, most don't have dedicated screens for each room. The color dungeon from the DX GBC version also returns but I didn't check it out on my first playthrough.
The game has an aitosave feature which comes in handy if you forget to save. Somtle of the downsides is the framerate changes to 30 fps whenever you enter/exit an area like a building or cave. There is also a blur around the screen but while I am uncertain if that was part of the game (like Octopath Traveler) I didn't find it a big distraction.
As a fan of the original I didn't think twice about paying $60 for this game. It was like playing it for the first time. It took me around 12 hours playing on Hard Mode so I'd say it would take new players that long on normal. However, if you are new to this title and style of game you may be hesitant to pay so much. So I would say wait for it to drop by $10.
This is a fantastic (though not flawless) remake of the original and I highly recommend it to all Zelda Fans or those who like top-down action adventure games.
I played this game in Spanish to help me practice and I thought the translation was good in both English and Spanish. I paid full price for this game and had gotten my money's worth. I completed this game between 10-15 hours; I disagree with some saying that's a short game.
