Product Description
The Outer Worlds is a new single player first person Sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division.
Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find Yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all-vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.
- The player driven story RPG: In keeping with the Obsidian tradition, how you approach The Outer Worlds is up to you. Your choices affect not only the way the story develops; but Your character build, companion stories, and end game scenarios.
- You can be flawed, in a good way: New to The Outer Worlds is the idea of flaws. A compelling hero is made by the flaws they carry with them. While playing The Outer Worlds, the game tracks Your experience to find what you aren't particularly good at. Keep getting attacked by Raptidons? Taking the Raptiphobia flaw gives you a debuff when confronting the vicious creatures, but rewards you with an additional character perk immediately. This optional approach to the game helps you build the character you want while exploring Halcyon.
- Lead Your companions: During Your journey through the furthest colony, you will meet a host of characters who will want to join Your crew. Armed with unique abilities, these companions all have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. It's up to you to help them achieve their goals, or turn them to Your own ends.
- Explore the corporate colony: Halcyon is a colony at the edge of the galaxy owned and operated by a corporate board. They control everything . Except for the alien monsters left behind when the terraforming of the colony’s two planets didn’t exactly go according to plan. Find Your ship, build Your crew, and explore the settlements, space stations, and other intriguing locations throughout Halcyon.

There's a decent amount of depth to character creation and progression, although I wish the level cap was a little higher as late-game weapons make quick work of even the largest, hardest enemies (the last boss I chewed through with a ~2000dps modded flamethrower that destroyed anything it touched). I have high hopes The Outer Worlds 2 will bring a lot of balance.
The game itself is wonderful. The learning curve for some of the slow-time mechanics isn't very steep. The companions are all wonderful in their own way, with SAM being one of the funniest, despite being a cleaning robot. The dialog is excellent, littered with tons of humor and good jokes which were still enjoyable even in late-game. There are so many small differences in the endings (and SO many story arcs that your choices can make subtle differences in) and so many ways to play this game that its relatively short single player campaign (20ish hours) means you can play through in multiple styles and ways - either siding with the colonists, the Big Bad Corporation, or finding your own path.
The "maps" are fairly small for a game of this kind, but that doesn't mean there's not lots of side quests to do (and you can certainly do them all, I sure did on my first playthrough). I never got tired of playing the game and never felt like it was grindy at all. The two DLCs are short and sweet, very pleasant and nice new environments to explore.
If you like Fallout style RPGs with loads of replayability and different ways you can work through the game, definitely give this a try, it's a LOT of fun, and the aesthetics, swelling musical scores, and gameplay experience is an absolutely awesome mix.
If you're unsure what I mean about humor, go check out the E3 announcement trailer for The Outer Worlds 2. It's one of the best announcement trailers I've ever seen for a game, and it's utterly void of any content at all. It's mostly a social commentary on the state of game announcement trailers, and it's hilarious and wonderful, and gives you a good sense of what this franchise is all about. :)
There are a lot of reviews that say its short (IGN says 25 hours with side quests) but knowing how I play. it will take me longer as I explore a lot and listening for unusual dialog, usually before starting on the main quest. It plays a lot like Fallout and looks a bit like Bioshock and Borderlands, esp when looting or interacting with npcs. Character customization is similar to Fallout, and it looks like there is a wide variety of weapons, armor and misc equipment. Graphics are good and gameplay is smooth, anyone who has played any fps will be right at home with the controls. There are some interesting combat options like being able to slow time, a bit like VATS in Fallout, allowing you to take critical shots to cripple limbs on opponents.
I don't know a lot about the story line in the few hours I've played, but the one fault that i can see is that it uses a similar setup to Fallout 3 or New Vegas with the weapon/armor repair. There are perks and skills that can minimize the wear and tear, but I really found that annoying in those games, it will probably be similar in this. NPC dialog seems to be interesting, but it does have a rather linear story line, like a lot of rpgs.
Overall I'd say that if you like the 'open world' type games, this is worth a look, esp if you can get it used along with the DLC. or for a lower price since it's now a couple years old. I bought it new for $19, which is not bad imo, though I saw used copies going for as low as $10.
So after only having this a couple days and putting about 6 hours into it, I think it will be pretty good and I'd recommend it.
