An Amazing Adventure
I picked this up late but it was well worth the wait. What can I say about Horizon Zero Dawn?Amazing main character, great, well paced story, although it does start off a bit slow and the graphics are just breath taking.Controls do take a bit of getting used to and close combat is a bit lacking but you'll still be an unstoppable killing machine with your bow and arrows. An overall great game!!

this is or might be the EU/UK version of the game. it is not clear though as to what you will be sent, more on that later.
the problem is that if you like the game, and i happen to like the game a lot, then you will probably want to play the expansion, The Frozen Wilds. problem is that there seems to ABSOLUTELY no way to buy the DLC from the US. i tried everything. created a UK PSN account but then there is no way to add a US credit card or a use Paypal account from what i can tell. i tried to get a PSN gift card but you cannot buy a UK one (Pounds) from the US and you cannot use a non-UK one to buy the content.

i am giving the game 5 stars because it is excellent but would give Sony -5 stars if i could. Sony PSN support was about as unhelpful as comcast. awful.

so beware and make sure that you are using the US version of the game or region appropriate version of the game. in this case the easiest way to tell is when you get the game look at the quotes on the cover. if they are from IGN.UK or the Tellegraph you may be in trouble and should verify the region version carefully.

This is the EU version. Don't buy if you're in the US and ever want to play the expansion The Frozen Wilds. You will have to rebuy and replay the game to do so because saves are also region locked. I do love the game aside from this major issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottimo. Versione UK
Reviewed in Italy on November 15, 2017
Il gioco mi piace molto. Grafica straordinaria e storia coinvolgente.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horizon: Zero Dawn - stunning, beautiful and rich with story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 3, 2017
Many games come along and are hyped up to be the reason to "go out and buy a PS4" but Horizon: Zero Dawn is the first game I have played in a very long time where I feel that all the praise and hype it's getting is actually wholly deserved. People often compare a lot of games to The Last of Us, another PlayStation exclusive, but I never really got why that game gets so much praise. Horizon Zero Dawn, however, I can fully get behind and here's why.

-----
Story
-----

In a world where humanity has been brought to its knees by a combination of mother nature and a powerful machine race, our story follows a young woman named Aloy as she attempts to find answers about her past and, in the process, discover her future. You're probably reading that and thinking it sounds like the start of a trailer for a really bad film but trust me, Horizon's story is an absolute rollercoaster of emotion, thrill and adventure. The opening scene before the main menu is very gripping and is narrated very well and had me hooked before I'd even pressed a button!

The developers have created a world filled with history and lore and it's surprisingly deep if you're willing to explore dialogue options and pay attention to things like collectibles. Aloy is an outcast from the Nora tribe - the remainder of civilization that occupy the northern parts of the world. As an outcast, she is forbidden from interacting with any member of the Nora tribe. The start of the game is packed with emotion as you begin to form a connection with Aloy and her struggle and is a good building foundation for the rest of the game. I was interested in the story just from the opening scene, half an hour later I was invested in it and three hours after that, I was thoroughly addicted. It's absolutely fantastic and is packed with thrills, emotion and adventure along the way.

Graphics
-----

Horizon: Zero Dawn is without a doubt the best looking game on PS4 right now. The colours are extremely vibrant, facial expressions are actually quite well done, weather effects like snow, rain and wind help immerse you in the game and the overall feel of the world just overwhelms you. Aloy reacts to weather changes as well - she'll wrap her clothing around her when snow starts to fall and hold her hand in front of her face when the wind starts to blow. Little details like this always, always make the game feel so much more immersive and only adds to the games credit. Character lip-syncing can be fairly bad at times in cut-scenes and during dialogue people only seem to move their upper body so it ends up looking wooden and stiff at times so it's not perfect but I don't think this is an issue in the grand scheme of things.

The game world is quite large and filled with a diverse array of locations such as snowy mountain-top villages, deserts and canyons, lush forests, lakes and streams, ruins and metallic structures and every time I ventured somewhere new I found myself just panning the camera around to soak all the detail in. You start the game properly atop a snowy mountain and I spent several minutes here just gawking at the landscape below me and taking photos in photo mode because it looked so damn good even on my standard PS4. Later on, you visit a city called Meridian and I arrived in-game just as the sun was beginning to rise above the canyons and this created an absolutely gorgeous image for me. No matter where you are in this game, you can take a photo and use it as a screensaver or wallpaper because it's really quite beautiful!

Surprisingly, the game runs extremely smoothly as I have experienced no loading screens in my travels to other areas, no stuttering or frame drops, nothing that detracts from the thrill whatsoever, even in combat. This is pretty impressive considering the sheer size of the map, the detail all around and how the combat can become quite hectic but yet again, the game delivers on performance. The developers, Guerrilla, deserve every bit of credit here because what they have created isn't just a game map for you to run around in, it's an actual living, breathing world and it's mightily impressive.

Gameplay
-----

Horizon is an open-world game packed to the brim with things to find, collect, loot and kill. The game map isn't as big as, say, The Witcher 3 but size isn't everything. The sheer scale of the environments and detail grabbing you on-screen plus the myriad of things to do will keep you busy for a long time and that's not even including going to-to-toe with the powerful machines roaming the world. The combat is perhaps the main chunk of the game and it's handled very well. Dangerous beasts roam the world, ranging from the small Watchers and Striders, the giant and sky-dominating Stormbirds and the massive land-based Thunderjaw machines like the one on the front cover of the game. Each machine behaves differently and the design and complexity of the machines in Horizon is fantastic and each enemy type can often provide tough resistance even after hours of playing.

The first time you stumble across a new machine beast, it pays to scan it with Aloy's focus to reveal helpful information about it like what it is weak to and simply watch how it moves and behaves. No matter how many times you've busted up a machine, you still have to play each battle like it's your first because despite how simple the combat is, it most certainly isn't easy. The Striders, for example, resemble horses and graze in herds but will generally attack if you spook them. Grazers are deer-like robots and that almost always flee in their herd when you hunt them but, if you're clever, you can corral them and lead them into traps you have set or lead them to a dead-end corner. Coming across a grazing herd of Striders, how do you approach? Sneak close using tall grass, place a tripwire trap between two points and lure one over to you. While it's down and the others are spooked, climb atop a nearby ledge, sprint forward, leap into the air and take aim in slow-motion (yeah, you can do that) as you let loose a single arrow that takes out another machine - the combat can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.

There are a range of weapons available in the game from simple bows and arrows, slings, spears and rapid-firing spear/bolt launchers as well as a variety of tools that Aloy can use to help her take down her enemies. Each weapon/tool or outfit has a variety of stats such as damage, handling, ammo capacity and damage resistance and you can find a wide range of weaponry to use from looting enemies, buying and selling with merchants and quest rewards. This is where the RPG sections of the game come in and it's something you will have seen countless times before. Aloy has a range of skills you can learn varying from slow-motion jump shots, silent kills from above, critical hit increases, luring enemies to your position and taming creatures to use as mounts! It's a very familiar progression system to most other games like it but it works very well and helps pace your gameplay. XP is earned through exploring, slaying machines and collecting parts and completing quests but I never not yet felt over-leveled at any point even after hours of playing. Enemies are still a danger no matter their level, or yours. The bigger enemies often feel like boss fights in their own ways as you chip away parts of their armour and reveal weak spots. The combat never ceases to entertain or provide that sense of thrill.

You can run in blind against pretty much every enemy but that doesn't tend to end well since you are nearly always outnumbered. Machines have critical hit points that allow you to deal increased damage and hitting these points can result in a variety of things happening. You can knock parts off the machines to help you build and improve your gear, break through a machine's armour to make scoring those critical-shots easier and you can even disable some enemy attacks by targeting their various body parts. Bellowbacks carry huge liquid sacs on their backs that they use to spit at you. Hitting these sacs with flaming arrows can cause them to ignite and explode. Or, if you target the machine's gullet, you can actually damage it enough so that it can't use the spit attack and you can collect the loot from the sac without exploding it. The tactical choices available to you in combat are simple, yes, but it's a system that works very well and makes each fight feel tactical and meaningful. Simple button-mashing and arrow-spamming won't get the job done in Horizon, especially on hard difficulty!

There are lots of things to do across the huge map of the Embrace. You can explore ancient ruins of civilizations gone by, practice in the various hunting ground challenges you will find across the world, gather resources to help you craft more arrows and tools, find hidden locations and quests, hunt down collectibles, seek out Tallneck machines which act as walking towers that reveal parts of the map if you can climb to their peak, and, ultimately, discover new and powerful machines as you travel the land and seek answers. When I play games I tend to ignore the main story and go off on my own, taking slow walks through the game world and admiring what the developers have created for me. Horizon: Zero Dawn feels like it was created for this very purpose because the sheer stunning beauty of the world and everything in it hasn't failed to amaze me yet, even after hours of playing. I value an immersive and gripping game world that I can just disappear into and, personally speaking, I think Horizon is the best I've ever seen.

I could stretch this review on even more but I think I've made my opinion about Horizon: Zero Dawn quite clear. I've been hooked from the beginning and that feeling hasn't escaped me yet. It's a fantastically well-produced game packed with story and emotion. It's core gameplay is flawless and so much fun and the overall presentation is the best I've seen on a PS4 so far. It's not a perfect game because it does have room for improvement on certain fronts, but this is the first game I've played in a very long time that absolutely nails everything it's trying to do and be. Horizon sets sets such a high standard for gameplay, story, graphical prowess and overall presentation that this is the game everyone should compare futures releases to. You want a reason to buy a PS4 or get into gaming? This is it, right here.
