5.0 out of 5 starsDream laptop

Have had this laptop for about a week now and I am completely in love. I upgraded to the newest Macbook Air after having an Acer Chromebook from the CB3-111 series and the difference is like going from SD to HD in the blink of an eye. The Macbook Air's screen is so much crisper and brighter than the Chromebooks, not to mention two inches bigger. Really makes the display easy on my eyes and even after several hours of use. Though it's bigger than the Chromebook, the Mac is much sleeker and lighter. Really easy to transport and it powers up super fast. The functioning of the Macbook Air is equally as fast and smooth. I love how easy it was to sync my iCloud information over to it and that all my favorite websites (and some passwords) were already detected. Battery life is great, well, at least to me compared to what I had going with the Chromebook, which was only capable of holding a charge for three hours in recent months. I didn't buy this laptop for the Garage Band or iMovie so I can't say how those apps run, but I can tell you that I've had five web browsers opened at once, plus Messages, Microsoft Word, and Spotify, and I didn't experience any lags or system crashes during that time. Really don't know how that compares to operating the bigger media apps so apologies if I didn't help you out there. But if you're like me, a college student who wants something reliable and fast and albeit, a beautiful product, then go for this. I've had and worked with other Apple products before and trust me, nothing compares to Apple. If you take care of this computer by not dropping or spilling anything on it or downloading things from un-secure websites then you can possibly wind up having this computer for ten years without any major mishaps. This laptop is expensive, sure, but there's definitely a reason for why that is. That reason will be obvious to you after just a few hours of having this computer. At least, it definitely was for me.

And just a quick FYI, make sure you've checked that the software is updated or else you'll have trouble downloading your apps. I had that problem when I first got it but the situation was quickly rectified once I figured out that the software was out of date. I've had no issues since. Just wanted to let you know in case that happens to you during the initial set-up.

And one more quick note: Keep checking back on the listings for the Macbook Air because it fluctuates sometimes between the full price and the sale price of $999.99 (at least, that was the lowest I saw it). Unfortunately, I couldn't get to the sale price in time and purchased it at the price it's listed at now ($1,109.99) but you might be lucky enough to do so! (:

2.0 out of 5 starsNo USB Port and too many unwanted programs
Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2019
I've just bought my fourth Mac Air and for the first time in years I'm wishing I bought a PC. My issues:

1. There is no USB port. You have to buy an adapter. One more way for Apple to charge money. I fine with having to have an external hard drive because I want a light computer but all of the other versions of Airs show that you don't have to lose the USB port in order to have a lighter computer.
1a. I bought an adapter and the encrypted USB thumb drive that works on my previous Mac Air reads as an error using two different (generic and Apple) adapters. Very unhappy with this "new" direction.
2. Too many programs on the computer that I don't want but can't be removed. Granted, this is the same with PC and it's been a while since I bought a PC so the complaint may be the same but these programs are traceable ways of getting into the computer. There's already too many ways of breaking into computers without giving more.
3. I never used iCloud (I'm not a worshiper of all things Apple so don't want to give them everything, including my computer files) and trying to disable it is proving to be difficult if I want to use iTunes. I may just have to use another device for my music so I can turn off iCloud.
4. I know I will get used to it in time but it requires more effort to do simple things (ie, on my old Mac Air if I wanted to delete something I click and drag it to the trash can; now I have to hold the command key and drag). It seems minor but little things make the difference.
5. My Quickbooks program wasn't accepted so I had to buy a new program.

Every time I go into a new program I'm finding little changes that make me unhappy so I'm going to leave it at this. Unfortunately, it looks like Apple is going the direction that Microsoft did -- "upgrading" good products until they are garbage.

The one positive I will give is the replacement power cord will not cost $79. It has a new power cord that allows you to buy it without the longer extension and only costs $20. It's surprising that Apple would actually be willing to find a way to cut back a cost on their product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop
Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2019

Nice laptop. Would not recommend spending over $999 for it, however. Not that it isn't a quality product, as it definitely is, but I've seen it on sale many times for that price - even less sometimes. Very sleek, modern, and well built. Great screen, however, I do keep the brightness level most times at or near the maximum. While it is plenty bright at those levels, it renders the lower brightness levels nearly useless. I cannot speak to the screen's effectiveness in direct sunlight, but didn't get washed out when it was used outdoors on a sunny day. The keys are quick and responsive, shallow (less finger travel), and the backlighting is excellent. My accuracy took a hit initially after it's purchase, but after some practice, both accuracy and speed picked up considerably, primarily due to the MacBook Air's key depth and size. Touch ID is great - quick and responsive. Track pad is large and also responsive to clicks and gestures. Force Touch does an incredible job of simulating a button press. Battery is quite good, and combined with its size and weight, provides substantial portability. Overall, the MacBook Air provides an excellent user experience for all the reasons listed above.

Note: Reviews on the machine (YouTube videos, primarily) mostly do not give it it's proper justice. Many reviewers tend to forget most potential high-end laptop buyers are savvy enough to know what they are buying, and know the difference between an Air and a Pro and their specific needs as end users. However, so many of the reviews cite the MacBook Air's efficacy at high definition video editing and gaming as performance benchmarks (most knowledgeable potential MacBook buyers would consider the Pro for intensive tasks) and gloss over things like workmanship, user experience, resale value, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Despite only 2 usb “C” ports, this MacBook Air is impressive and a keeper!
Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2019

First off, this review is by an average user that surfs the web, streams videos, edits photos, etc. This is our first experience with Apple computers having moved away from Windows OS based laptops. There is a big learning curve using MAC OS products, but as we already have iPads, it isn’t too bad. And as you begin to understand, it becomes seamless and smooth.
The initial dislike is it only has 2 usb C Thunderbolt ports, and as one must be available for charging, you are left with just one for dedicated added peripherals. And, you will will need adapters to use former usb, sd, or hdmi products. However, those adapters are minor in cost. But usb “c” seems to be the wave of the future by most computer manufacturers, so, oh well.
Aside from that, it is an impressive laptop. Fast boot up (less than 1 minute) even after installing programs and apps. That’s partly due to the ssd and new quad core i5. The Retina screen is vibrant and sharp, but perhaps a little darker than I prefer. However, this is overcome by bumping up the brightness a little in settings, which may affect battery time a little. It’s lightweight and thin construction makes it easy to be your travel companion. I have come to like the upgraded, low profile keypad. The size of the keys is generous with just enough travel and “click” to keep you typing confidently. The trackpad is also smooth and responsive with, again, just a enough “click”. I chose not to use the fingerprint ID but use a password instead as there are multiple users in our household. But other reviewers indicate the fingerprint ID works wonderfully. This MacBook Air handles multitasking with ease for the average user, and 256gb SSD is more than adequate for us, and I can see 128gb as being subpar for even the most light user. The last thing to consider is build quality. Apple prides itself on this, and it shows. And looking down the road, a Mac is always sought after and holds a high value. Win-Win.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way Better Than What the Professional Reviews Say!
Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2018

I was kind of cautious when I decided to buy this new MacBook Air. I had been a longtime Windows user and honestly love Windows 10 so the decision to buy an Apple Laptop was hard. Especially after reading the reviews by the Verge, CNET, Apple Insider and other outlets, I was wary of buying this product. However I have been pleasantly surprised by the complete hardware and software experience.

The first consideration of mine was battery life. Since I'm a student and frequently travel, I need something that I could confidently carry without a charger for extensive periods. While Apple advertises 12 hours in certain situation, I have gotten up to 15 hours with a mix of web browsing, word processing, messaging on iMessage & WeChat, and multimedia consumption (no-gaming). A full charge on this laptop lasts me at least 1.5 days of full business. I don't know how this will hold up over time but I'm loving it!

The infamous butterfly keyboards filled me with trepidation when purchasing the model but they are actually really nice. I think they have a good (not amazing) amount of travel and they are enjoyable to type on. As for longevity issues, I think they are mitigated with the membrane Apple added and a cheap but effective keyboard cover. Also TouchID works like a gem but wouldn't FaceID be appropriate since this is Apple in 2018? Lastly, the touchpad is a masterpiece. Responsive, accurate, and customizable, it is eons better over anything Windows or, god-forbid, Chromebooks.

As for internal hardware, I know reviewers have tout the Y-Series as a weaker inclusion in the MacBook Air. But for me and my mix of productivity task, it works at lightning speed and a good upgrade over the Intel Pentium models I used beforehand. The 128GB baseline storage, while meager and laughable at the price point, is enough for someone who can rely on external storage or cloud services. The two USB-C ports both can charge and while annoying, the transition to USB-C from all the other ports is probably something that will future-proof the laptops (just have an adapter with you). The Retina display isn't a huge upgrade from some of the mid or even upper range Windows laptops now and the lack of touchscreen capabilities is slightly inconvenient in certain situations but does prevent annoying fingerprints. The webcam is lacking pixels and isn't anything special but to be honest, how often do you use your webcam in this day and age?

You probably can get something better value if you would like to stick to Windows. I switched because of attractive pricing and the fact MacBooks apparently last forever. A few of my friends are still sticking to their early 2010s MacBook Airs and Pros so I figured it was worth it over Windows laptops that sometimes just last for one or two years. MacOS, while different and foreign for a Windows user, is actually very intuitive once you get used to it (I still can't figure out right clicking sometimes). But all in all, a great laptop, very safe bet if you were to consider buying, but wish it was more innovative in certain aspects. Totally would recommend!

Pros: great lasting battery life & charges quickly , great screen quality for any kind of content , the screen is amazing, Touch ID is useful in many ways like Apple Pay/signing in, the laptop is fairly light, keyboard is awesome (it does have a click sound when you type), the trackpad is better and more useful, and much more! Great laptop and is great for college students like me!

Cons: THE PRICE lol, no Microsoft office installed(you need to buy separately, you GOT TO buy a sleeve or case since this is a scratch magnet, the speakers are not so great(bass is like fuzzy) , the camera quality is 2/5(blurry and just not great), and the ports(there are only 2 on the left side and on the right side, there is the headphone jack. It is kind of annoying that you have to use one side for charging. Other than that, it’s very reliable, lasting, stylish, and overall a great buy for an upgrade or a new selection! This was my first apple MacBook and I primarily got it since I need a reliable laptop for college.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value: definitely pricier than a PC but will last forever!

Purchased as a gift for my spouse - who tends toward finding something wrong with everything - and all I’ve received is positive feedback. The screen is beautiful. The thinness is remarkable. The only issue I have is there was no option to buy the usually $129 3-year extended warranty from Apple. I should’ve known that the price was too good to be true: at $999 basically $200 cheaper than everwhere else ( when purchased)... now we are having problems buying the plan from APPLE for a new product and the cost is $249! You live and learn. Luckily there’s an Apple store here we can go to. But next time I won’t buy without that option.

Gotta say, as an Apple convert, their products last and last. I never had a windows-based machine last more than 1-1/2 to 2 years. The last laptop I bough my spouse - a top of the line Toshiba - got a virus after 6 months that basically rendered it a doorstop.

My 5 or 6 year old Airbook? Still lightning fast and never had a virus issue (the screen is showing age and looks pretty crappy compared to the new ones - but that’s not enough to justify a new one!).

My iMac desktop from 2011? Slow now but still kicking and the 21 inch screen is still amazing: bright, clear: not one pixel gone bad all these years. . I use it as my “entertainment center” at my office: stream audio from Spotify to a Bluetooth stereo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous, portable laptop

Amazon had the new MacBook Air on sale for $999 and I jumped on it to replace my 2011 11" MacBook Air even though that laptop was still working fine and looking like it was 6 months old rather than 7 years old. I decided to upgrade because the old MacBook Air became ineligible for OS upgrades and was laden with older technology (USB 2.0, 802.11n, low-res screen) and the battery would only last about 90 minutes.
I love the new unit and it pretty much exceeds my expectations in every way. It feels about 3x faster than the old machine, the screen is much sharper (and bigger), sound is significantly better and the battery lasts me about 8-9 hours with brightness cranked up fairly high. I also like the new keyboard and the bigger trackpad.
I do wish that Apple still made this system in a 11" screen form factor but I guess that I am in the minority in that regard. I also wish that Apple/Amazon sold the 16GB configuration of the MacBook Air but they only sell it as a custom configuration directly from Apple. I would have happily paid for extra memory to better future proof the system. But currently the 8GB are sufficient for most usage scenarios.
Highly recommended to people who want a basic but high-quality laptop that can last a long time. Probably the ideal college student machine, especially if you can get it on sale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Initial thoughts from a late 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro owner
Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2019

So my late 2011 suddenly stopped working and it seemed graphics card related. It was getting hot and the battery was losing it's charge fast for months prior anyway. I saw the new 2018 airs months ago and was really intrigued. I decided to hold off given my $ situation. Then my computer stopped working. I read every review I could find and decided that with my light usage (like most users) that the stock 13 air was perfect for me. So here are my thoughts. It is certainly bright enough. I was worried about that given the complaints. I've used it in high light and low light situations and I haven't been wanting. The fan has never ran yet. I've watched entire hour videos, 20 tabs open. Not once. It got slightly warm once but it was 1/10 of my old 2011, even when I first bought it. My most intensive tasks are probably converting from Flac to mp3, so I'm not really requiring much. I was worried about the keyboard compared to the old one on the pro. I love this keyboard. I don't understand how anyone would like the old one over this. I love the feel of this one, my typing is so much faster and accurate. The battery lasts forever. The screen doesn't feel as small as I thought 13 would feel coming from a 15. I like the new OS X. I don't like the iPhone style notifications when things aren't being updated. The 125 gb SSD was a bad decision by apple. 250 should be minimal. Those are my only complaints. I paid the 1200 (well 1050 amazon, 50 add for tax) because I still fell that the apple experience (hardware and esp software) far exceeds any PC/windows. The frustration I feel with them makes them nearly unusable. I like linux quite a bit and a few PC's have run it well. But this computer is my everyday one that I can bring to bed and use just before sleep to read up on things, watch videos, etc. I'm extremely happy with this decision and would absolutely do it again. I bought space grey. It is gorgeous, fit feel, everything. If you're coming from a Mac that is several years old I can't imagine how or why you wouldn't enjoy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars parking my iPad
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2019

I gave 4 stars for this laptop, because Apple has pretty much left consumer needs behind. I have been an Apple user since the Lisa in 1983. Early on, I enjoyed Apple's desire to design products that were great designs and worked like any top of the line product should. They were always trying to make better products.
That being said, I will always hate Apples inability to have a screen on any of their products that you can see in sunlight. Over the years Apple has tried to change every new iteration of a product so you have to buy new cords et al. I do not care for the Apple Brand now, but I am bound to Apple because I have used them exclusively for almost 40 years, and just too old to change. Plus their products last and last. My iPhone 5s just died last week after 6 years.
I used to use my iPad for work with an aux keyboard that kept falling off when I tried to hand it off, or sometimes even when moving it. I also realized that I had to touch the screen, and then go back to the keyboard a lot - never used the$$$ pencil either.
I thought about it and found the MacBook Air was almost the same weight as my cased keyboarded iPad .So I parked my iPad and bought the Air Retina. I continue to use my iPhone for lots of my daily stuff, and I have switched to carrying the Air around for work instead of my iPad. With the computer keyboard, you can use arrow keys to navigate and I like the new Air keyboard and trackpad. Folders are easy to use, tabs and forward delete are also necessary for me. I also like reading books on my larger screen. Of course Apple has left off some the little extras like the ability to use a flash drive. Bottom line is the Air Retina is a good machine. I hope to get some good years out of it. I haven't tested the battery life yet as it is so new, and I won't use the Air for photographs, so I just rated them 3 stars.
If you just mess around on your iPad, and don't need a keyboard, keep using your iPad. If you find you are working more on your iPad with a keyboard, you might rethink and move to the AirRetina. I'm writing this review on my heavier Macbook Pro 13" (2015) with all the bells and ports, and will use it for another 5 years at least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2019

I purchased this MacAir for my husband as a Xmas gift. There has been NO problems to report as of yet. My husband is happy with the performance but this Macbook Air was very expensive compared to other Macbook Airs.
UPDATE: The battery life under "normal" use ONLY Lasted 8 hrs. compared to Apple claims of 12 hr. battery life.
BUYER BEWARE: It has also been reported that the new MacBook Air models could eventually be impacted because of a cable design issue that MacBook Pro models are having. The cable wraps over the display board and could potentially exhibit the same failure (see description of problem below for details ) as the MacBook Pro models . It is disheartening that once Apple product stood for QUALITY but no longer when you hear about issues with the MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, I purchased this MacBook Air BEFORE I read about "flexgate" issue.

Description of problem: Most recently it has been reported that some 2016 and later MacBook Pro models appear to be displaying issues with uneven backlighting caused by a delicate and easy-to-break flex cable, which has been dubbed "flexgate." The flex cables are loosely wrapped around the display controller board and when the MacBook's display is opened, the cables are pulled tighter, leading to tears and problems over time. The issue can impact any 13 or 15-inch MacBook Pro model manufactured in 2016, 2017, or 2018, though it appears to be affecting Touch Bar models more frequently. When you first buy a MacBook Pro, the flex cable functions perfectly. With repeated closing and opening of the MacBook Pro's lid, however, the durability can decline, leading to the display issues. Since it takes time for the cable to break down, machines experiencing this issue generally do not display it for several months to years after purchase. Because it takes time to show up, affected MacBook Pro models may no longer be under the one-year warranty. Unless you have AppleCare +, Apple is charging upwards of $600 for customers who are out of the warranty period to fix the problem. There have been more & more complaints on the MacRumors forums and the Apple Support Communities. Apple hasn't commented on the issue at this point in time, and there is no repair program in place. So far, Apple is NOT standing behind their design flaw.
