While the image quality is pretty good, better by link or virtual desktop, the battery life isn't great.
I can't wear my glasses with the headset as they are too wide, so keep that in mind, I have to wear my contact lenses.
I find the apps on the store a more expensive than I'd like, especially bwhen some of the games are less than an hour long. The apollo11 experience for example lasts 40 minutes but costs 7.99.
You can sometimes see the image reflected back on itself through the lenses causing ghosting, shifting the headset around can usually fix some things.
Buy some microfiber cloths, as you will accidentally touch the lenses often, mostly with your forehead and fingers putting it on and taking it off.
The official link cable is currently £75, but the Anker cable at £23 does exactly the same thing.
Enough of the 'bad', the good:
Mostly good to excellent quality, I prefer to use apps by link or virtual desktop for the steam games side of things.
Not much more to praise other than I can't wait to see how vr will be in 10 years.
I've barely put it down since my purchase, sometimes three or more hours go by before I realise I'm thirsty, or that it's 1am. Beatsaber and audica are my go to's at the moment, but games like the gallery ep1&2, fisherman's tale etc are well with the time to play. Google earth vr needs to be experienced too.
All in all a great experience so far, well worth the 299.
I had the first Oculus Quest. During lockdown in particular it was a godsend. The ability to escape into other worlds has been amazing. There’s a good variety of games including the fabulous Beat Saber, Onward and A Fisherman’s Tale to name just a few. I even managed to take part in a virtual version of The Tempest via The Under game.
This new version is an improvement in pretty much all areas. The most important being the increase in screen resolution. It’s very noticeable. They’ve lost the OLED capacity for true black but I’ve not noticed this is in real world use. The Quest 2 is also more comfortable as it’s lighter and doesn’t stick out at the front quite so much. Battery life in the hand controllers is also vastly improved. I can’t speak for the basic head strap as I bought the enhanced one. It’s a big improvement. The one I have also increases battery capacity. Well worth the extra investment.
Controversy surrounds having to have a Facebook account. If you have one already this isn’t really a practical problem. Just be aware Facebook’s policy is to use your real name so you can’t set up a dummy one without the risk of losing the account. If you’re against the whole idea and don’t like the idea of sharing any data it is possible to set up a Facebook account that is totally private using the privacy settings. It’s perhaps worth exploring all this first before buying the Oculus. It’s a bit like buying an Amazon Echo speaker, a waste of time if you don’t have an Amazon account.
All in all it’s a very reasonably priced entry into VR which has reached the point were it really does work. A truly exceptional product.
