I chose this version of the MacBook Pro because I have a fairly demanding workflow that requires a 6 core CPU and a discrete GPU. I'll be honest, I didn't expect much from the Radeon Pro 555x but it actually is a pretty decent performer. I'm able to play games like Total War Three Kingdoms and The Elder Scrolls Online with great frame rates and visuals. I can also run many concurrent Docker containers as well as client IDEs without issue, which shows the capability of the CPU. As for the thermals, this laptop does get warm under load however i do not notice any throttling, atleast not with the i7/555x model.
I love the form factor and portability this machine has. I would say that the only con of this laptop is the price. Admittedly, for these specs $2k is a bit much for this laptop, but you do get a lot for that money. For me personally, MacOS is my preferred OS. And being so tightly integrated with all the other Apple services and products I use is also a huge benefit. The build quality is solid and it should last me a long time. In all 5/5 from me!
I really like it, sounds great when I play music, links all of my other apple Stuff.
Movies/ YouTube all other media is amazing as to be expected.
I know it’s slim but it’s build sturdy.
One thing I didn’t realize was there are all USB-C ports, this makes for better download speeds, it’s charges fast, looks sleek.
But if you want to plug anything in that uses regular USB, you’ll need a dongle.
I bought one off Amazon, it has the USB ports, SIM card port and HDMI port so I can steam movies right onto my tv.
If your someone who does a lot of research before buying a product like I do, take it from me, if you get the Mac, you won’t Be disappointed
The 15” display is gorgeous, and acceptable for editing photos or doing layout work. I recommend an external display for more involved work (CAD, rendering, animation, motion graphics, video editing, etc).
For light web browsing and office apps, this unit offers all-day battery life. If you’re doing any intensive computing however, you really need to be plugged in. Anything that utilizes all eight CPU cores will quickly drain the battery - you’d be lucky to get two full hours without plugging in.
In November 2019, I purchased a new MacBook Pro 15-inch with 16GB RAM. Here is a short rundown of my impressions and problems with this machine.
Previous Amazon reviewers had complained about other current MacBooks having too few thunderbolt ports, so I splurged on a more expensive model than I actually needed in order to have four thunderbolt ports. All of the peripherals I previously used on my last MacBook had USB connections (monitor, docking station, external hard drives), so I had to spend money to buy a new docking station with a thunderbolt port, and two types of Nonda USB-C to USB adaptors. One Nonda adaptor worked fine (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B015Z7XE0A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1), but the other was glitchy and caused my WD Passport external hard drive to fail (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XYTHCXV/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1).
When I took my hard drive in for data recovery, the local technician rolled his eyes and said “Another thunderbolt port problem? Typical.”
Apple support suggested that I use a LaCie Rugged as my next external hard drive, so I invested in a 4TB model. However, the LaCie has now dismounted twice in the middle of data transfers, causing my anxiety level to skyrocket. Today I ran First Aid on the LaCie which took well over an hour to complete. No errors were reported so I’m left in the dark as to what is causing this issue.
Another vexing new “improvement” is the charging power chord for the MacBook. The power chord for my last laptop had a convenient light on the plug-in, which glowed “white” while charging, and “green” when fully charged. In a move totally lacking in logic, Apple chose to leave this feature off their new MacBook charging chords. So now, the only way to know if the unit is charged is to open the unit, take it out of “Sleep Mode,” and check. Annoying.
Why is the fingerprint security ID right next to Siri? Every time I use my finger to log into my device, I’m asked if I want to enable Siri. The answer is an emphatic “NO!”
This will most certainly be my last MacBook Pro. I find the current model to be counter-intuitive and quite costly with all the constant attention it requires. Plus, any peripheral I plug into the MacBook tends not to work, or has a list of time-consuming problems that need to be worked on.
