Welcome Back to Aperture Laboratories
In Portal 2 players awake in the Aperture Science Labs as Chell, the heroine of the original game. A great expanse of time has passed since the conclusion of the first game and the gameworld has fallen into visible disrepair, but placed in suspended animation, Chell has survived intact and is revived. With the help of a robotic entity the concluding events of the past game are revealed and you escape your initial confinement, but in doing so GLaDOS, the the AI computer antagonist from the previous game is also reawakened. Just as fickle as ever, GLaDOS' motives are unknown. Insisting on testing you, it may assist you but may also be planning something more sinister.
Gameplay
Like the original game, Portal 2 is a first-person Platform-Puzzle game. In the single player campaign players assume the role of Chell, a former test subject trying to gain her freedom from the Aperture Science facility and GLaDOS, the AI controller of the facility. Set in the test chambers of the facility your goal is to make your way through the game levels using your portal gun (the Aperture Science Hand-held Portal Device). The portal gun creates temporary passages through solid surfaces, allowing for creative platforming and multiple possible means of clearing a level. The game also requires the player to solve puzzles at times to clear sections of levels. In addition to point-to-point movement through portals, players can also utilize other means of movement of themselves and various objects. These include: using the momentum of portal movement to make jumps to open positions like ledges; tractor beams; and special propulsion/repulsion gels that can be carried or stored.
New Cooperative Mode
Portal 2 contains a multiplayer option in the form of a two-player co-op mode. This is playable both locally and online, with split-screen functionality available in local play and in select places during online play. Players assume the role of one of two robotic characters, Atlas or P-body, both new to the franchise. These two have separated from the control of GLaDOS and so must survive its anger, divvied out in the form puzzles, obstacles and misdirection. Each player has control of their own portal gun, which they use to platform through the game levels, avoiding its dangers and relying on each other.
Key Game Features
- Extensive single player game featuring next generation gameplay and a wildly-engrossing story
- Complete two-person cooperative multiplayer game featuring its own dedicated story, characters, and gameplay
- Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game
- Original soundtrack
- A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.

You pick up with Portal 2 many years after the initial Portal left off. You're the same person being woken up from stasis by a little floating robot. He is trying to save you, but soon enough you are back in the system, solving puzzles, using your portal gun to create in and out portals. Then it gets even more fun. There are new goo substances that let you do even more amazing things. I won't describe them all because half of the fun is discovering what they do and how to use them. Suffice it to say that it brings gameplay to a whole new level.
The humor is simply spectacular. The subtle comments had me laughing out loud the entire way through. The main character is female and I have to wonder if them only really trigger in a female player's brain. I was playing with my boyfriend and some of the sly comments about weight went right over his head, while I was rolling with laughter at the prods that were being made.
The graphics are great, and when you go through the commentary track you realize just how hard the team worked to get everything to look just right. Their attention to detail is impressive.
The voice quality is also spectacular. The slight lilting of one character's voice, the deliberate pauses and emphasis of another - these are voice actors who know what they're doing. It really shows when a gaming company finds the perfect person to embody an on screen character.
There's single player and co-op mode. This could be tough for solo players; they'll have to find someone to play with to get through those. I know several people who get massive headaches at watching the physics-mind-bending portal play on the screen so this might not be as easy as it sounds. Still it's well worth tracking down a fellow player to go through those levels with.
Is there a down side? Well, as mentioned, some people just can't handle watching the gameplay because of it's jumping-from-heights, rotating-quickly-in-all-directions style. It simply makes them nauseous. And it's also worth mentioning that some of these puzzles are *challenging*. They're not meant for four year olds to hop through. They require a great deal of logical thought.
But to me that's the beauty of it. It's almost a shame that walkthroughs are so easily available on the web, for people to give up after five minutes and find the solution. The joy of this game is that it trains your brain to find solutions, to seek out the answer to a puzzle by breaking it down into logical steps. In pretty much every case here, you can see *what* you need to do. You just have to figure out *how* you get to that end point. I strongly believe that this logical puzzle solving ability is a superb thing for all of us to get better at, and that Portal 2 is a fantastic way to boost that skill.
Plus it is just SO much fun from start to end.
Once we finished the game we immediately went through the commentary track and it is even more fascinating. So be sure to check that out!
Highly highly recommended.
The first Portal was fun and unique, and this sequel is everything it should be plus more. Using a portal gun, the player creates portals in walls (and ceilings and floors) that act like wormholes to solve various puzzles. The tools in addition to the portal gun have been expanded since the first game, and they provide for a lot of variability and new challenges. The solutions to these puzzles are always simple, but not necessarily easy to recognize. All puzzles (the easy and the more challenging) are satisfying to solve. The player solves them, both in pristine laboratory conditions and also in a decaying facility, in an attempt to escape said facility and gain freedom from an existence as a human experiment.
Through dialogue of the other characters (great voice-acting, by the way) the player is treated to witty humor throughout the game, and I found myself often smiling, and sometimes outright laughing. While not jaw-dropping, the graphics are very solid. Smooth lighting, mild colors, and cool scripted sequences make for a very immersive and pretty environment. The sound is amazing: crystal clear and interesting, and the music fits the game very well.
I have only played the single player campaign through so far, but it was so satisfying the multiplayer mode and future downloadable content - some of which is supposedly going to be free - will be bonuses. I think this would be a great game for younger kids, too. There is a only a little violence against machines, no gore, and very little objectional language (a few damns and hells here and there, and maybe a couple oh my Gs). Also, unlike most games, you need to use your brain!
Finally, the ending of this game is by far the most memorable and coolest I have ever experienced in any game. I kept thinking about it all day after it was over because it was THAT awesome (even had to show it to the wife, who agreed it was sweet). I won't admit like a lot of people on Youtube to having cried at the end, but the music and visuals are beautiful, and without giving anything away that isn't already expected, it does leave you with a very optimistic, "you're alive and life's waiting for you" feeling. One of the few must-play games! Highly recommended!
