I don't like to go very in detail about reviews, so I'm just going to bring up a couple things that people might be wondering.
The Screen:
The screen is Super AMOLED, basically meaning if there is a Black portion on the screen, the backlights for that portion do no activate. This allows for much better contrasting and it's A LOT easier on the eyes at night.
The screen can dim down QUITE A LOT. I usually lay down at night in a pitch black room with it and turn the backlight all the way down. Hardly affects my eyes.
It's pretty usable in bright areas/sunlit areas. If you turn the brightness up high enough, it's not too hard to view the screen.
The screen is an extremely high resolution for being so small. It looks very very crisp and sharp, and you can't see individual pixels unless you look very hard and up close. You will be able to see microscopic dots. I have run some games and applications that don't run at maximum resolution so they aren't as crisp as they could be. They look a little blurry for instance.
Battery:
Battery life varies. I can get anywhere from 3-8 hours of battery with constant usage. Pressing the button to suspend everything/turn off the screen saves a lot of battery. I can let it idle for days and it won't die.
Wifi and Bluetooth drain the battery very quickly. I would say twice as fast without having them on, so I usually put it in airplane mode if I'm on the go or I don't need Wifi.
This thing will not charge through your run of the mill USB port that fast. It will drain faster than it will charge, even if you just leave it on the home screen with nothing open. You MUST use the higher amperage charger it comes with, or something similar, or you will be waiting ages for it to charge.
In light of the above notice, I have ran very intensive games while using the included charger, and it still charges. So the charger is fast enough to keep up with the tablet running in high gear.
Physical Buttons:
Has a sleep button, a volume rocker, the home button, and two touch buttons. This is what really annoys me. The placement of the volume rocker gets to me because I always accidentally bump it when I hold it in Portrait mode, and it's hard to get to if I'm holding it in landscape mode. I have also accidentally pressed the sleep button instead of the volume up button.
The home button returns it to homescreen, and left button opens up the task manager which allows you to view open background apps and memory usage, and it lets you terminate tasks (Useless for Android, don't do this, actually wastes more battery than it saves).
Touchscreen:
Touchscreen is very responsive. I honestly have nothing to say about it. No complaints here.
Build Quality:
It's all plastic (I think). It doesn't really seem that cheap, and it's certainly not flimsy. I have however heard of cases of the bronze/silver ring around the frame falling off or loosening for some people. Hasn't happened to me.
Performance/Gaming:
I've run just about every major game there is for android, and I've also used PS1, N64, PSP, and DS emualators. The only thing I've found that it can't run well is a God of War game for the PSP Emulator. Runs everything else flawlessly.
Can hiccup sometime after having lots of things open and closing them.
Generally runs very fast and smooth. Web pages load nicely, etc. The Flash Fox browser is garbage, so I wouldn't recommend that. I've used that on several high end devices and it lags beyond belief. Stick with Chrome or something.
Accessories:
Has a slew of accessories you can buy. I didn't want to wait for one to arrive by mail, so I went to my local Walmart Supercenter. They sell this tablet, but as it turns out, they do not sell ANY kind of cover or case for it. This is an 8.4 inch tablet. All my Walmart had was 7-8 inch tablet cases, and 9-10 inch tablet cases. Literally none of them fit my tablet. How annoying.
Camera:
Camera isn't the best, but it's certainly better than the camera on the 3DS or the Playstation Vita. It is fuzzy looking, I wouldn't recommend it for anything professional, but it's good enough for casual use.
Wifi:
Haven't had any problems or complaints with the Wifi. I'm using a cheap $15 router from 2009 and I'm in an apartment behind a very thick wall from the router, and it still works fine. Loads web pages like it should, streams 1080p videos from Youtube.
SD Card/PC compatibility:
You'll be pleased to know that it accepts Micro SD cards (I currently have a 64GB card in mine). I do not know how large of an SD card this tablet accepts.
On top of SD card compatibility, this is also a tablet that allows you to hook it up to a computer and freely browse the SD card/System Storage through Windows. If you want to hook the Tablet up to your computer through USB and drag and drop some mp4s from your computer to the tablet, you can do that. As usual though, the transfer speeds are very slow. Tested through USB 2.0 and 3.0, both work. I don't think it's a 3.0 cable, so there's no speed increase.
I've mainly been using the tablet to play PS1 games, watch Youtube videos, and to watch TV shows I put on my SD card. Works fine for what I need it for, and it's a nice backup to keep in touch with the internet in case something in my Desktop breaks. Stay away from cheap stuff, always buy expensive things is what I usually say.
I live in remote Alaska and do not have internet at home, This requires that I often have to download content for offline viewing. Thus the final selling point to me was the ability to expand my storage with micro SD cards. I really liked the Nexus but there was no way to add storage capacity. The Tab S can accept up to a 128GB card which for a tablet is a lot of space. The Samsung file browser is excellent ( I espicially like the "move file to" option instead of just "copy to") and it's easy to navigate to things stored on the card.
As many before me have stated, the screen is AMAZING! The colors pop and the contrast is great. Even low res Facebook pictures look good! Movies, photos, magazines and even normal web pages look great. The screen brightness is wonderful, often I've seen tablet screens that are tough to look at in bright sunlight but this one "shines"! Even when I turn down the brightness for low light reading it's plenty bright and saves in battery. The color and contrast does not suffer from dialing back the brightness.
Battery life is quite good, it charges fast and I can watch a full length movie or several episodes of a show before the battery reaches 50%. There are a couple battery saving settings built in that would boost this even more. I was impressed by the "super" batter saver setting that gave an estimate of almost 50 days of juice (in standby)!!!
The dual speakers are fairly decent, the volume is adequate and the sound is good but not outstanding. There is one on the top and one on the bottom or one on each side in landscape mode as when movie watching. If I'm by myself I'll likely plug in headphones anyway but for a quick sharing of a YouTube clip or some tunes it's more than adequate. These days Bluetooth speakers are cheap and great quality, so if you plan on lots of movie watching with friends then one of these will boost your volume to enjoyable levels.
One of my favorite tablet uses is magazine reading. The processor in the Tab S is more than enough juice for quick page turning and fast loading of large and image heavy digital magazines. I prefer the Amazon Kindle app and do not use the Google Play Newsstand app. Either way I'm sure they'll look great. Books are nice too, with the high contrast and deep blacks, print is easy to read even with the brightness turned almost all the way down.
Music is pretty straightforward, as I've already said the sound from the speakers is good. With headphones plugged in I can't really complain about anything. The music app is a little hard to use sometimes but that's an Android issue and not the fault of the device. In any case most of my music and podcast listening is still iPod territory.
Web browsing is snappy and reaponsive, downloads are quick. I use Chrome for my browsing needs and it works like it's supposed to. I'll be happy when Google finally implements an offline reading feature but for now "printing" web pages as a PDF is working fine.
Now for bloat ware, yes there is a lot. In addition the the Play Store there is a standalone Samsung App Store and lots of other Samsung exclusive apps. While you cannot simply uninstalled these you can "hide" of "disable" them so they are not cluttering up your screens acreage. A couple of them I'm actually using. The remote app works with both my Samsung TV and a cheap Orion screen. If only it could control my Samsung blu-ray player then I would lose the standard remote forever. The multi-task window feature is neat but has limited uses, as only select apps are compatible. If I had purchased the 10" model instead of the 8.4" then this might be a more useful addition, but it's still cool.
Now for my biggest complaint, the fingerprint reader....it sucks! If your buying this because of this than be aware the the swipe (vs hold for Apple devices) is very sensitive and frustrating to use. I wanted to store my wife's fingerprint so she could unlock the tablet when I might not be around. It took FOUR (you have to swipe 8 times to catalog a print) tries just to get her print logged. Often I would have to swipe 4 or 5 times to unlock the tablet. I ended up turning it off in favor of a 4 digit pin. It works, but is not user friendly.
The Tab S is VERY light and thin, but since I purchased a rugged case to go with it, this is somewhat nullified for me. Protecting my $300 device is more important to me than sheer thinness.
The front facing camera is only 8 MPs but that's pretty decent IMO, the outdoor photos are clear and colorful, indoor are just okay but useable. The rear camera is fine for Skype calls and such. Really though, how many of us are buying a tablet to take pictures with? It works be nice if they could roll in a 10 mp or better camera in the future.
All in all this is a solid 5 stars! If your desire is media consumption and you are an Android fan as I am and want the best looking screen on the market, your search is over! If your into games then they will look amazing. I've enjoyed the Samsung Galaxy Tab S for a little over a week and already am thinking about getting one for the wife so she won't have to suffer any longer with the POS Dragon touch tablet I got for her to use. But that's another review.
Thanks for reading.
