The MX150 dedicated GPU is more than enough to keep some beginner level gaming running nice and warm, but it WILL get hot the second you try to play more 3D intensive games. Otherwise, the build quality is typical of Acer, with a plastic bottom encasement and an Aluminum palm rest/frame.
The camera is pretty bad, but then again, GET A DEDICATED WEBCAM YOU DOLTS. IT'S THE CHEAPO CHINESIUM WEBCAM THAT IS LITERALLY 50 CENTS TO MAKE!!
OH, and the hardware on this laptop picks up the Linux Kernel just fine. I've got Fedora 29 running on it right now, and everything is working smoothly without any issues. I also upgraded the RAM on this thing to 16GB and put in an 500GB SATA M.2 SSD in here.
LASTLY: THIS THING IS NOT NVME SSD COMPATIBLE. GO TO ACER'S WEBSITE AND PULL UP THE FULL SPEC SHEET BEFORE YOU MAKE SOME BAD REVIEWS BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T RESEARCH THE LAPTOP BEFOREHAND...!!
I did have to order a mounting bracket and cable from Acer to attach my hdd (part # 42.GP4N2.SV1) that you can order from the Acer website for $8 usd. Other reviews have mentioned you can call them and see if they'll send you one for free. I opted to forgo the hassle and pay the 8 bucks.
Pros: A lot of power packed into a $600 laptop. If you're not a hardcore gamer but still like to play games this might work for you. It exceeded my expectations.
Cons: (These are nit picky and subjective)
1. No cd drive but who uses those anymore anyway. If you do need one you can always plug a cheap usb one into it.
2. If you want to add a 2.5 hdd for storage you need to order the cable and bracket along with being comfortable opening up a brand new laptop. The Acer website has a guide with pictures on how to do it, though.
3. Plastic lid and aluminum palm rest show prints fairly easily. If you have ocd like me that might bother you but pretty minor.
Over all very pleased with this purchase. You'd be hard pressed to find a laptop with 256g ssd, discrete graphics, i5 8250u processor and ddr4 memory for the money. (At the time of this review) Will update this in the future should my opinion change.
-newest generation i5
-dedicated graphics
-ddr4 ram
-256g ssd
-fairly light and thin, feels sturdy, and looks professional
The laptop has held up well to daily use, is quite capable. It has excellent audio for a laptop. After using it a few days ago on a trip, I can say that after hours of intense use it does not try to cook your legs/crotch. The matte finish screen is well readable in full sunlight, and despite not being an IPS panel, has quite a decent viewing angle. WiFi card supports MIMO for increased speed, intra office file transfer was moving at around 180 MB/s (by no means a great test, as I've not tested the other bottlenecks in that system, but shows promise). Given the plastic case with the sturdy but thin aluminum plate, It is quite light, and was comfortable to rest on my lap for a while, and is not a burden to carry in a backpack. It has awesomely grippy rubber feet, and was quite stable on a sloped surface of around 60*, and gets a good grip on brick as well. The battery life during intense use (cpu and gpu use around 90%) is around 2 to 3 hours, which is decent for most of the work I do.
Cons:
-fan can be a bit loud, but not unbearable.
You don't get the whole laptop. I'm not kidding. One of the deciding factors in my purchase was that it could be upgraded (Hard drive and memory). Upon arrival I had intended to install the 1tb hard drive from my previously deceased laptop. I opened the hard drive bay on the bottom, and discovered a lack of any mounting system, and NO SATA CABLE to plug it in. After calling tech support, I found out that this cable is sold as an "upgrade kit" but that they would send it to me free of charge. Four days later the package arrives. I open it to find only a basic hdd caddy, no mounting screws and no cable. Called again, they sent the "right" kit. Six days later it arrives, seems to have everything. The bag containing the upgrade kit has a url for their installation guide (go.acer.com/hddupggrade); however, it does not have a guide for this model. I call support, and am told to "search YouTube" (no videos there...). Having experience dismantling laptops before, I decide to do it, and lay out the tools. I will update this review with disassembly pictures for anyone else in this mess.
After disassembling I begin to install the kit, to find the sata to motherboard cable is not long enough. On the phone with support as I write this... will update this review when this is settled.
EDIT: after a month of back and forth with support I was able to get the correct cable and caddy, and am using both the SSD and HDD. I'm satisfied with the laptop now, but it should not have been advertised as easy to upgrade, when it required over 6 hours of phone calls to get it to the condition I intended to use it in. See the forum post I made here: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/536814/hard-drive-install-for-a515-51g-515j

Aunque no lo he contabilizado...
