Product Description
Plugable's flagship DisplayLink docking station has gotten a big upgrade. The Plugable USB-C Triple 4K Display Docking Station (UD-ULTC4K) was designed from the ground up based on five years of collected user feedback to include improved charging capabilities, more flexible display options, an SD card reader, and a front-facing 10Gbps, 20W USB-C port to fast charge your phone and other devices.
This second-generation dock provides a better customer experience with 3x DisplayPort ports and 3x HDMI ports to match your monitors. And of course, whichever you choose—HDMI or DisplayPort—you’ll get resolutions up to 4K @ 60Hz on all three monitors with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 hosts via Alt Mode. But monitor ports weren’t the only thing to get a boost. The UD-ULTC4K comes with 100W charging to better accommodate larger laptops. This docking station is a one-stop shop for all peripherals users may need, connecting all 13 ports to the laptop with a powerful 10Gbps USB-C cable.

4K Your WayCompatible with Windows, Mac and ChromeOS, the Plugable USB-C Triple 4K Display Docking Station (UD-ULTC4K) is the computer docking station built for adding monitors. Featuring 3x DisplayPort ports, and 3x HDMI ports, now you can standardize on one or use a mix of both. And HDMI or DisplayPort will give you resolutions up to 4K @ 60Hz on all three monitors when connected to a compatible host computer with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 hosts via Alt Mode. |
Ports a PlentyThis Displaylink docking station has a front-facing USB-C port for 10Gbps data transfer and 20W charging to accommodate your phone or other devices. Speaking of peripherals, the UD-ULTC4K also has 4x USB 3.0 ports for 5Gbps data transfer rates, an SD Card Reader, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and separate audio in and audio out ports. Requires installation of DisplayLink Drivers—automatically downloaded with Windows and ChromeOS updates, manual update on Mac |
Power DeliveredPower Delivery—charging your laptop through a USB-C port—can get confusing. How much power is enough? How much is too much? The UD-ULTC4K has you covered. With 100W charging (96W certified), you have enough power to charge just about any laptop—even under a heavy workload. And if your laptop needs less power, the dock communicates with your computer to negotiate the perfect charge level. To strictly comply with 100W regulatory limits with margin, Thunderbolt certification limits to charging to 96W. |

The team at Plugable reached out to me based on my original review. After some terrific support it was determined that the original unit had some intermittent connection issues which caused the connection loss as I described. They were able to solve this with a new unit and I have been using it for several months now with no issues. I updated the rating to 4 stars as the unit did have to be swapped. I will say their support experience was 5 STARS!
============
I picked up the USB-C 4K Plugable after mistakenly buying the HDMI version. My objective: Get an M1 MacBook Air to do what Apple should have built it for tin the first place, run two external displays.
It does a reasonable job at this using the Display Link software package to do the "screen magic" required to extend to a second display. I am running two Dell U2719Ds at 2560x1440 via the DP++ and charging via the USB-C at the same time with only one USB-C going to the Mac.
Note the headline... it works when it wants to. This is a finicky dock. (This is not an OWC throw-it-against-the-wall-and-it-keeps-chugging dock). You plug another USB device in or say even move the dock with an accidental nudge and the displays will lose sync and go dark. It behaves oddly if you leave your Mac plugged in and set it to sleep. I suspect this has something to do with the Mac OS and its wake-from-sleep cycles. I have a pair of external speakers plugged into the front audio jack and every so often when the Mac is asleep and the displays dark, I will get an audio static burst over the speaker as they get energized. It's something the dock is trying to do paying attention to the Mac signals over the USB-C. I don't know what exactly but this is from observation folks.
Also, things lose enumeration and power over the USB after a nights sleep. I cam into the office and tried to get on a video call to find my headset plugged into a USB hub into the back of the dock was not recognized. Checked into it and no power to the back 4 USB ports on the dock. Check ton port and it had power. So something happened in that over-night-funk where the hub lost the ability to power the rear USB ports. In order to restore the ports I had to re-cycle power to the dock. Thus: FINICKY.
Why oh why Apple did you do this to us? Anyhow, there you have it: this does the job you need, just be ready to have things unexpectedly stop working due to finickiness.
I started to experience intermittent video hiccups, and eventually this turned into my monitor saying it was not receiving a signal at all. I eventually narrowed the problem down to the first pair of ports on the hub. I contacted support and after asking some basic trouble-shooting questions, then sent me a replacement unit which is working flawlessly so far. Thank you Pat for the excellent service!
I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a top of the line solution to Apple’s bone-headed decision to gimp their M1 chip. Pro tip: if you decide to remove the foot so you can lay it sideways, save the foot somewhere you can find it again because that’s the only place where you can see the serial number.
