I would buy immediatelly that laptop with 4k OLED screen and AMD Ryzen!
A couple of nitpicks about this laptop:
1) There are some driver issues. I have had a couple BSODs, and another issue where the screen looks like a 1970's TV on an un-tuned channel (complete static). Mostly, it has been stable, but once a week or so, one of these issues jumps out. Search the forums on Lenovo's website, you will see others with similar issues.
2) After using the laptop for about an hour, there are fingerprints everywhere.
Overall, I haven't had the laptop long enough to determine whether I would buy it again or not. So far, I like what I've seen, and would be leaning towards purchasing this model again.
The team at Laptop Authority are really good people to deal with. Had one issue during the purchase, and they resolved it very quickly and to my complete satisfaction. Will definitely buy from them again, whether this model or another.
I was on the lookout for a portable machine that could do gaming and Adobe CC. I tend to buy things used to save on money, so I got this off of eBay for less than $1000 (but upgraded the RAM and added a 2TB m.2 SSD, which brought the total price back up to $1000). The Lenovo Thinkpad series has always been a solid performer and this machine is no different. It is built for business and can handle so much more.
At first glance it is a very plain-looking laptop, and that's great that it doesn't scream to attract attention. No garish RB colors here. Nice, clean matte surfaces, and the only thing that makes this unique from another plain black laptop is the X1 logo on it. It is VERY light and doesn't feel like much of a powerhouse. Great to surf the Internet on the couch and carry anywwhere.
Only two USB-A ports on the right and two USB-C ports on the left... but not a big deal if you're starting to transition to USB-C devices or use Bluetooth. Thinner bezel, great FHD (1080p) screen. Usual TrackPoint, buttons, and touchpad. Chiclet keyboard feels nice. Fingerprint scanner is a welcome touch too. There is a slot for a smart card reader, which is amazing if you are in the military or a government civilian and don't want to mess with an external USB card reader. (Apparently the readers themselves are not easy to find; search for part number 04X5393.) Full HDMI port. SD card reader. Usual stuff.
The USB-C ports will also work to charge the laptop as well as connect to a Dell WD-19 dock. (Yes, it connects to a DELL dock and WORKS.) This is fantastic because I can use my work laptop and interchange with this laptop with the same setup just by plugging in ONE cable.
Very easy to access everything and upgrade components by taking off the single backplate, secured by seven obvious bolts.
Performance is superb. Two m.2 SSD bays... so you can add another drive if you want. A W10 install with Fast Boot enabled gets you to a desktop in less than 10 seconds from power-on. The i7 is plenty fast: performance is very zippy. Zero complaints on speed. Plenty of RAM, and if 16GB is not enough, you have two DIMM slots to upgrade.
The NVIDIA 1050Ti Max-Q is on the lower end of mid-range, but it's still plenty powerful with running modern applications and games. Working with Adobe Lightroom CC is a breeze [as long as the software itself is stable]. I haven't done any crazy Premiere or After Effects projects with it yet, but I have faith it will make short work of what I throw at it. Gaming is fantastic too. I can run Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, Death Stranding, Battlefield 3, and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on high settings, and looking to try even more graphically-intense games in the future. The GPU renders games beautifully and you don't feel like you've compromised at all.
And of course, Optimus chooses to run integrated Intel HD graphics to save you a good bit on battery life when you're not using the dedicated GPU.
The fans run pretty quiet but they are noticeable on this laptop, especially if you are gaming or working on a multimedia piece to stress the CPU and GPU. It will get hot and I don't really recommend actually having this on your lap if you are going to play more intensive titles or work, but I don't see anyone actually playing games on this or doing serious multimedia work on the couch. The fans blow DOWNWARD through the grill at the bottom of the laptop, so this makes sense... but also, keep that in mind and don't try to suffocate the laptop by setting this on a bed or propping it up on a pillow.
Heat dissipation seems to be pretty good and sensible: CPU and GPU are close to each other, and there's enough copper carrying heat to be blown away by the fans. This is one of the biggest things I look at when purchasing a laptop: can it cool itself? Components can literally be cooked... this is why I hate HP consumer-level laptops, because they tend to die within a year or so because the cooling is inadequate.
Battery life is pretty good, but I'm biased... I think that two hours ia great, which means that the more-than-five hours I get out of being unplugged and doing web browsing and basic tasks is so liberating. If you put on a heavy workload or do gaming off the cord, expect this to be much less. The power cord for this machine is a little... uniquely-shaped. After years and years of rectangular bricks, this laptop has more of a flat square shape. However, it is slim AND light... and for the power it needs to provide, this is pretty nice.
The thing is, if you want a long-lasting laptop that's not fragile and will serve you for years to come, always look at a business-class laptop. If you don't care for Lenovo, HP makes absolute garbage for consumer level laptops (think Pavilion), but I love their Elitebook series. Dells make decent consumer level laptops (think Inspiron) and even better Latitude and XPS series laptops.
And of course, Lenovo has their fantastic Thinkpads. This laptop is just legendary in my book.
20220620 Update: Still legendary, love this thing. But I will point out a few things that I've discovered through use.
- Super easy to install a smart card reader. Makes it a great gaming AND business computer for folks who need CACs, like military and government employees.
- This is so thin that grabbing the laptop from the hinge part while the laptop is on can accidently STOP the cooling fan and cause a Windows crash... as in it just turns off. Pretty annoying, so I now just make sure I grab it from the other end if I have to move.
- I kind of wish it had a touch screen to do casual web surf scrolling, and I'm sure you can upgrade that... but the fact that it opens up 180 degrees lets you prop it up on your knees while you lounge on the couch, which is nice.
- Any CPU or GPU-intensive stuff gets this thing uncomfortably hot if you have this on your lap. I am lame and only have been playing MTG: Arena on this lately... on the couch, so it ends up on my lap. And like I said before, it gets hot. (Keep in mind that if you are not on AC power, Windows Power Options may throttle the performance.)
