Product Description
What is a Hardware Wallet, and Why Choose a Ledger?
|
|
|
|
---|---|---|---|
1. Why a hardware wallet ?When you own crypto, what you really own is a private key that gives you access to your coins. You need to keep this key completely safe. |
2. What is a hardware wallet?Hardware wallets place access to your private keys (and therefore crypto) offline, which means hackers can’t get to it - even when your device is connected to your computer |
3. How is your crypto safer with Ledger?Crypto “ownership” is not about the location of the coins, but access control. With Ledger, nobody can access your coins but you (not even us). |
4. Industry-leading securityNanos are the only hardware wallets that combine independent, third-party certification (ANSSI) with a proprietary operating system (BOLOS). |

I'm new to crypto currency so I haven't downloaded anything to cold storage, but you will need a way to store your keys to anything you pull to cold storage.
The main reason you pull crypto to cold storage is for safe keeping - as long as the crypto is active or in any hot storage solutions, it is at some level of risk of being hacked. But it likely isnt worth cost of moving to cold storage unless you plan on holding the crypto for some time. I didn't see the fees involved until later - you may want to check what your exchange charges to move to cold storage because each charges differently. There is at least one that offers a couple of moves to cold storage monthly if that is in your plans.
I expected to be able to set up my own key on the device & all you can set up is the PIN you use to access its menu. The key that transfers between exchange and storage is preset when you go through the initial setup. Note that some receive wallets where the initial setup is complete. I did not receive on like this and I believe Ledger owns this account - at least if you go to the Ledger website, it points you back to this store to purchase wallets.
If the initial setup were complete, there is no way I'd use this wallet. With the set up passphrase, you can set up any ledger wallet to match it. So be aware where you store that set of words.
Using the actual device isn't too difficult, you have 2 buttons that scrolls through lists. When you click both at same time, you select whatever you are on. The most tedious part of setup is writing down all the words. There are 3 or 4 cards included to write the entries on. Once you have them, you will have to go through and pick the words in order they go in. I thought I messed up and was having to start with a new passphrase - the screens look very similar when you are asked to verify. Once that is complete, you are set to download crypto applications.
Each type of crypto has an application to match. This is why many buy this version of a wallet rather than the cheaper one Ledger makes. The cheaper one only has enough storage for 2 or 3 types of crypto to display at any one time. Be aware, you can delete the app after downloading your crypto keys. You will just be able to quickly access the keys for any app that is currently installed. Since I do not know how many I will store, I felt like it'd be easiest to invest now and not have to worry later.
One key differentiator is which crypto can be stored on each wallet. They dont all match. If you want to put anything unusual into cold storage, you need to make sure your wallet supports it. This wallet supports way more types of coins than my exchange offers in the US and in my state. Crypto is limited for which can be purchased at the US level and at the state level. Also which exchanges can be used is limited the same way.
After over 1 year of regular use my Ledger Nano X is still going strong. No battery or other major issues to report!
--Original review below
Let me start by saying I was really worried about having the battery issues that so many of these Ledger Nano X's seem to have had over the past several months going by online posts and reviews here and other places... Upon receiving this one I immediately connected it to a standalone charger to see how it would respond and to make sure it would fully charge before connecting it to a computer to actually begin using. This worked without issue and I didn't have any errors or warnings and the device came with the battery at around a 34% charge so I'm guessing this has to be a pretty fresh from the factory specimen.
So far, about 4 days later (11/26-11/30/2021) I haven't had any issues with the battery or other functionality.
As far as the usability goes, it seems to be working exactly as it should. I'm using it with only a couple of cryptos now that aren't directly supported in the Ledger app suite but by external wallets. The 4 star review comes from me comparing this device to the Trezor Model T which I also have and bought before this device. Having the top spec offerings from both companies, I can say that I like the full color touch screen of the Trezor Model T much more. The physical interface and screen of the Ledger is not nearly as easy to use.
Be aware that you'll have to do a LOT of clicking with the two buttons the Ledger has to get anything done as far as navigating the menus on the tiny monochrome screen and approving various prompts, etc. For security reasons, the screen will by default lock after 10 minutes of inactivity, I believe it is, so you'll be prompted to unlock it pretty regularly if you aren't constantly interacting with the Ledger buttons. You can adjust this time out to be None, 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes.. Of course, setting it to "none" wouldn't be advisable for security reasons.
As far as the other features like Bluetooth for connectivity to mobile devices, I didn't want that feature at all and would rather be able to buy a version that has the same or better interface without and more storage space for additional crypto apps for a cheaper price. I disabled the Bluetooth and haven't tested it so far. Their Ledger Live app seems alright and I think it's got a better layout than the Trezor Suite as of now. Since the crypto I want to use the Ledger with isn't supported directly in Ledger Live, I haven't been able to test out many of the features that it has that are available to crypto assets that are natively supported so I can't speak to that yet.
To me it seems like Ledger should have another model without a battery and Bluetooth, with more storage so there's areas of failure. I also think it would be nice if they had a larger, touchscreen like the Trezor Model T so it would be much easier to interact with the device.
As far as build quality goes, it's designed like the old school USB flash drives with the swivel port protector. The body of the Ledger is plastic and the swivel cover is some sort of metal. The side with the screen is glossy and one of the two buttons is plastic and the other is metal and the USB C port is on the left side of the device when you're interacting with it which makes it a little more awkward when having to press the buttons.
Overall, it's functioning as it should and I'm happy it supports the crypto assets that I intended to use it it. I do wish I could have used the Trezor Model T instead since it has an easier interface but as it is now, Ledger HW wallets have a wider embracing by the crypto community and is supported by more crypto assets.
FYI - we all know that eventually all batteries in devices like this fail and there is no way to replace the battery in this device so keep that in mind!
I will update the review if I have battery or other issues down the road.
