pretty good laptop, but with quality control issues. would be great if not for the issues. [updated]
Great laptop, but seems to have quality control issues.First off, issues that are not due to individual defective units:A) Bit of screen wobble, doesn't happen often/severe enough to be a problem. If you use it as your primary writing device it may get to you.B) Fan noise is less than ideal. Not volume-wise, but the 'quality' of the fan noise is somewhat poor. There are distracting 'pitched' noises at different fan speeds that is different from the 'regular' fan noise that is reasonably expected of any fan in general. For example: the MacBook Pros have no such noise and from the videos that we've seen online, the 2018 Razer Blade 15 does not seem to have this issue either. Not sure if this is considered normal compared to other laptops on the market, but at a similar price point to the MacBook Pros and Razer Blades, we would like to see Gigabyte and other manufacturers see to this issue as well. Fan noise is not just about the decibels, it's about the 'quality' of the noise as well. Now the more important stuff, individual defects and weird out-of-the-box experience:Our first unit had yellow tint only on the left side of the screen. Sent back for a refund/replacement.The second unit did not have the screen problem, but had two faulty keys: enter and F. The enter key had this stickiness and a loud mechanical noise that is not present in other keys, and the F key had the issue that was described by a bunch of users where the keycap is faulty and basically ready to come off. Sending back for a replacement again. But the most worrying thing was that the second unit arrived with some oddness. first, the package was delivered damaged, without the top handle on the box. this we attributed to an unfortunate accident, and didn't think much of it since it probably didn't affect the unit itself. But upon opening the package, we noticed something strange – the charger shipped with this unit was not the one that was included with the first unit, the one we've seen on online reviews. this one had a much larger dimension, slightly different power output, and a straight connector as opposed to a right angle one, which makes a huge difference (the second photo is the 'correct' charger, third the 'wrong' one, and a size comparison). [additional information: updates below]Upon finding out that the keyboard was faulty as well, we could not help but think maybe there's been a foul play somewhere. Was this a refurbished unit? Why was there a wrong charger that barely even fit the box compartment that it came in – apparently because it's designed to hold a smaller charger? The detachable power cord part which came in its own plastic package within the box was also missing the plastic bag (which in itself is a good thing from an environmental point of view, but we are skeptical that it was meant to come bare this way). This seems very unusual and damaged our trust in the Gigabyte brand and/or Amazon. hoping to find out what was going on, but not confident that we will get to.Hopefully the third unit will be free of these weird issues and we can move on with the purchase without having to request another replacement and getting home early to sign the package etc etc. The laptop itself is pretty great minus these issues. Would be pretty content once a solid unit arrives. Although we are less than completely happy about the fan noise.[Update 1]After receiving and examining the third unit, it appears that the units shipping from Amazon now include the bigger, heavier, and basically worse charging block (this however clears the suspicion that there was a foul play involved and it was most likely just a case of damaged package). The third unit has issues with the left side of the display being dark as if some shade effect is enabled (not a tint like the first unit). Wondering if it has to do with light bleeding. The third unit also suffers from the space bar being clicky and loud in the way that the other units were not.The second unit started experiencing the 'blue screen of death' graphics fatal error many users have reported. Can't get it to Windows screen currently. Will have to file for another replacement. almost wishing we had kept the first unit with the tint and just requested a discount or the like.

At this moment, I have the laptop for almost a month and I have been impressed. It really blew my old laptop away with the performance and battery life, while maintaining a sleek, low-profile appearance.

    PROS:
+ Battery life. So far I have been able to chuck in 6 to nearly 7 hours of light usage under the power saver setting. Smaller ultrabooks can still outlast this, sure, but considering this is a gaming laptop with serious hardware bolted on (more on that later), it is more than acceptable. If you don't use the laptop in a frequent basis, you can use it on the go without bringing the charger around.

+ Performance: Intel i7-8750H and a Max-Q Geforce 1070. This really handles newest games pretty well. Combined with the 144Hz screen, wow. This laptop can play demanding titles at more than 60 frames per second. For example, I was able to get 72fps on Forza Horizon 4 alone with settings auto-detected on ultra. There is minimal thermal throttling and the laptop handles its thermals pretty well. Unfortunately I can't give more details on temperatures as I struggle trying to get the RivaTuner app working.

+ Portability, aesthetics and build quality: You are expected to pay a premium for this laptop but the build quality is really excellent. Screen is sturdy and there is a minimum use of plastic on the laptop itself (see hinge). And since I bought this laptop during the Black Friday week, there was a discount to sweeten the deal. Aesthetics and portability drew me to this laptop because it has managed a really good job cramming serious hardware into an unassuming chassis. I brought this laptop several times in my college and no one batted an eye, or even notice that it is a gaming laptop underneath. Portability is really impressive. At 2kg, I can easily bring this in my backpack without adding too much weight penalty.

+ Thunderbolt 3 port: This is definitely a plus as I've been rather skeptical on how mobile GPUs can future-proof themselves. Fortunately, there is a Thunderbolt 3 port which allows external GPUs to be connected and run in near future, should the mobile GPU runs out of steam.

    Some CONS/MISSES:

    - Storage and RAM: The stock storage, while it has an SSD by default, kind of left me skeptical. While it is rather fast, I have doubts putting in more stuff, let's say videogames because it will take quite a lot of storage space and I might run out before I know it. I am a college student and there is a chance I might run into situation I am putting a lot of schoolwork into the hard disk. The single-channel 16GB RAM is kind of a bummer as well. It is probably the bottleneck for more performance in games. I've seen reviews of this laptop and they recommend swapping for dual channel RAM for more frames per second.

    - RGB lighting: at first I had fun with the gimmick, but it gets old pretty soon. When I got the laptop I have a chance to play around with it by turning the RGB lighting on to "wave" setting which was pretty cool at first, but after few weeks I left it on static white because it looks more clean and sophisticated. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of RGB lighting but some people have their own tastes (me included) and I want to preserve Aero's clean aesthetics.

    - Keyboard: I really wish there is an option to have the Aero WITHOUT the numpad. Sure, there are certain groups of people that needs a numpad in their life, but for my own personal use I do not use the numpad often. Keyboard travel is pretty much satisfactory, with me getting a lot of satisfying clicks and feedback, but would it be better to have more key space if the numpad were absent. It gets tiring to type on the keyboard for extended amount of time, especially in productive work.

-Speakers: Also a miss because some people might demand more from a speaker in a laptop that costs 2 grand. While I can live with it, the speaker sounds like a sub-one thousand dollar laptops in terms of sound quality.

Update: I found an issue with the webcam after several Windows update. It worked perfectly out of the box but I encountered camera timeout issue with the Windows camera app. The odd thing is the built-in AmCap software is able to display a webcam output while the Windows camera app shows a camera timeout issue. This is something that I need to address to the local service center.

Conclusion: The Gigabyte Aero 15X is an excellent laptop for people who wants performance for their gaming demands while maintaining subtlety and battery life while they are not gaming, which can be useful in public/professional situations. The wealth of hardware offered, screen quality, and other merits command a premium but there are shortcomings/compromises that prevents this laptop from getting a perfect 10 in real life.

This is a solid machine. You can feel the power inside. Great Keyboard, the fit and finish feels solid. The weight is well balanced and doesn't feel fragile. The screen is nice and the chin is not a big deal to me and I don't use web cams often. The Battery is great, though I have had differing results depending on differing video drivers installed which I will mention later. You can adapt to the keyboard layout and I like the num-pad. The Port options are so nice! I am an apple user though I couldn't afford a Mac Book Pro, I didn't think I would miss the SD card, but I think now that I would greatly miss it. The track pad is great after installing the lenovo Window precision drivers. I feel I could use this in a professional or non-professional environment.

    The Bad:
The "D" key on my keyboard gets missed often while typing. I'm not sure what's going on here. I am certain I am pressing the keys but I often have to backspace and retype sentences. I need to press harder on the "D" key. Other keys do the same thing. Perhaps I need to type harder on this keyboard to make sure the keys are registered which is unfortunate. The key travel is nice though.

The Drivers is the big issue here. I have tried the default settings using the Aero Smart Driver app and had sluggish spurts an pauses for some reason. I would also get the Blue screen of death very often. Mostly when coming out of sleep mode, but sometimes out of no-where. I have tried uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and using Nvidia experience. I have tried older drivers as I read about on many forums and had varying results. I also did the same thing with the Intel Drivers. Then when I thought I finally had a stable machine I would wake up the next morning and be woken with the BSOD. I thought that perhaps it was the auto windows update that made the changes. I then uninstalled some of those updates and it appeared stable and then I was woken with a BSOD followed by being forced into the BIOS. I had to re-vert to the default installed image and started all over again. I tried installing different things in different orders to see if it would help and when I thought I was out of the woods, the BSOD would come back. Twice I got caught in a Loop of booting into the BIOS unable to get back to the OS.

I then re-installed a fresh windows install and used NVIDIA experience drivers and Intel Driver assistant to install their recommended drivers. I then used Aero's smart dirver app and updated the remaining drivers. I let windows do its update and all was well for a while. I went a couple of days without issues and was met with the BSOD again forced into the bios and unable to get back to windows. I then re-installed a fresh windows install again and did the same order but I disabled windows auto update and my machine has thus far for about 3 days remained stable.

I no longer appear to have stutters and pauses or being met with the BSOD. Perhaps I am now out of the woods. It has been a pain to say the least. I don't know exactly what the problem is. I read many places it was an incompatibility with the Intel and Nvidia video card drivers. I heard about windows updates being the problem. I'm not sure exactly. I have spent countless hours reading through forums trying different things and now I think I found an answer.

    Final thoughts:
I don't mean to discourage anyone buying this machine. It has been a pain, but I have been patient because I recognize that this machine is a beast of a machine and offers a lot. Others success was the encouragement that kept me going at it trying to find the right driver compatibilities. I must be honest and I must also mention that its a shame that a consumer should be met with such problems after spending >$2000. All of these issues should be ironed out prior to placing on the market. This is the exact reason that apple can afford to charge the "apple tax". Sure they have problems, but few and far between in my experience and I am deeply invested in the apple Environment. Though, they do not offer the balance of what I wanted for both Professional editing and Gaming power. Apple's new MCP might provide those desired results with their new Video Card they just added but for $3,700 + I am forced to look elsewhere.

Which lead me to the Aero 15X. There were honestly times I had some buyers remorse, but now those feelings are gone. I can recommend this purchase as long as you are determined and willing to persavere. I have read of some that had none of these issues. Perhaps there are differing batches of varying results?

Worst case scenario: you buy it and have some of these issues and return it for full refund with Amazon.
Best case scenario: you buy it with no issues or with some that you work through, and then are left with an awesome machine that can game & edit to your hearts desire.

4 Stars for all my efforts.

I received this laptop over a week ago, and haven't had a single problem yet. I've never written a review on Amazon, but using this laptop had compelled me to!

Pros: Powerful, has been able to handle any game I've attempted to play at ultra settings
    - Beautiful finish and very well built
    - keyboard is a little bit shifted to the left but, but feels good and snappy
    - 144hz screen is beautiful, and if you've only ever used a 60hz screen this laptop will blow you away
    - Colours are extremely accurate
    - SSD allows it to be pretty quick
    - Very refined and subtle design, can be used anywhere

    Cons:
    - As others have shared, the keyboard backlighting is pretty good, but the right shift key is much dimmer than the rest (Does't bother me in the least though)
    - Screen is a little dark for my liking, but I'm used to a Macbook so I'm not surprised at all. Still looks great whenever I do anything
    - Can sometimes double type (lliikkee), but that could be a result of me not being used to the feel of the keyboard
    - Gets loud and hot (peak 76C for GPU and 86C for CPU, never reached higher after 4+ hours of gaming, but wouldn't be surprised if it went higher as the laptop gets older) under load, but I use a gaming headset and it hasn't bothered me once. You can still hear the fan faintly while doing everyday tasks, but I'd rather a slightly louder fan than a hot computer
    - Due to the finish, fingerprints and the like are pretty noticeable, but nothing that looks horrible
    - Lastly, touchpad and the obvious webcame placement leave a bit to be desired. Seems like one could install windows precision drivers, but I haven't yet

Overall, despite some of it's cons, I have so far loved every second with this machine and I would recommend this laptop to anyone who's looking for a subtle, but powerful laptop that gets the job done. (Budget permitting, of course)

I bought this laptop mainly because of the massive battery that is in it. My old laptop (Surface 4 Pro dual core i5, 8gb ram) couldn't last more than 3-4 hours yet this can last about 8 hours easy. My workload is generally word documents and browser tabs with spotify in the background. The IPS 1080p144hz screen makes my own TN panel 4K monitor feel dated with its smooth animations and vibrant colors. And the performance of the laptop feels comparable to my desktop with a 4th gen i7 and a GTX 980. It was easy to add an additional 1tb of NVME storage for games and various other things. And the performance in games very excellent, obviously it depends on what titles and settings you are using but the latest triple As should be very smooth at High/Ultra settings.
However, there were some teething issues. Out of the box, the laptop was very, very and I mean very laggy and almost unusable. It wasn't until all of the Windows updates were finished being installed that it finally showed what it could do. There was also a issue with my keyboard where the left shift key kept getting stickier and stickier until it almost didn't pop up again. However, the excellent support staff at Amazon and Gigabyte helped me get the issue resolved within a week. All in all, this is an excellent laptop that I would recommend to people who are looking for great battery life plus performance but also need to be aware of some teething issues.

    Pros
    ------
+ Very powerful for a laptop of this weight/size(even with a nerfed GTX 1070)
+ 144Hz display? Never used it before and now I feel spoiled…
+ Battery life is decent on Windows(averaging 7-8 hours)
+ Keyboard is subjective but felt quite nice in my opinion
+ Trackpad feels quite nice after driver change from Windows side
+ Two M.2 slots, In my opinion, this should be standard for 15" laptops...

= Very expensive at full price but seemed fair after the price cut(2400 CAD)

    Cons
    ------
    - Terrible out of the box experience as…
    - The trackpad is meh
    - Laptop gets too hot without undervolting, clocking down to 2.9-3GHz
    - Windows freezes frequently
    - Even after undervolting, it still feels a little toastier than I liked
    - Fans are quite loud under load
    - Webcam’s placement is terrible(though I don't care)

    First look
    -------------
Gotten around Nov 2nd, booting up the laptop and the first thing I did was to check for any hardware defects since I noticed quite a people having problems with this system in question. So far:
    - Little backlight bleed
    - No dead pixels
    - No coil whine
    - No obvious physical damage
    - Keyboard feels sturdy and free from obvious issues
So, hardware-wise, off to a good start compared to the other laptops in the past. While the WiFi card it comes with is good, I replaced it with a more recent Intel 9260 for faster speeds and Bluetooth 5.

    Windows + anything in general
    ------------------------------------
Got the laptop, booted it up, and out of the box it was a mess… Have to clean install Windows 10 and install some of the necessary drivers/software from the bunch they have pre-installed.

After clean installing Windows 10 and installing drivers with the Gigabyte Smart Update, now it feels a lot better. From gaming to simply the whole system, in general, is a treat with the 144Hz display.

    Linux(?)
    ----------
I haven't tried it extensively, but since I was bored I decided to try to at least boot from a live USB stick. From the few Linux distribution that I have tested, Pop!_OS(an Ubuntu-derived distribution) is the only one that booted from a live USB without a single problem(attached a screenshot). Rest either fails to get to GRUB or freezes upon showing the desktop environment. Regardless, using a different OS requires one to go to the BIOS and change one setting related to Secure Boot keys.

    *edit:
    - Quick install with Pop!_OS and making some tweaks(Powertop, Nvidia disabled, undervolting), it sits around 6-7hours(an hour or 2 worse than Windows...)
    - Further changes, like changing the DE to Budgie, seemed to increase the battery life to around Windows level now

Maybe I'll come back to this one later once I get another SSD, and hopefully get my favourite Linux distribution (Antergos) working. I do not mind using Pop!_OS as my main driver though

    Overall
    --------
After fixing the mess Gigabyte made out of the box(could have been a 5 star had I not need to fix it), it turned to be the laptop closest one to perfection as it has everything I wanted. If you do not mind fixing the software problem yourself, then the Aero 15X is going to serve you well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dream laptop if you fix it, terrible out of the box…(short term)
Reviewed in Canada on November 3, 2018
    Pros
    ------
+ Very powerful for a laptop of this weight/size(even with a nerfed GTX 1070)
+ 144Hz display? Never used it before and now I feel spoiled…
+ Battery life is decent on Windows(averaging 7-8 hours)
+ Keyboard is subjective but felt quite nice in my opinion
+ Trackpad feels quite nice after driver change from Windows side
+ Two M.2 slots, In my opinion, this should be standard for 15" laptops...

    Neutral
    ---------
= Very expensive at full price but seemed fair after the price cut(2400 CAD)

    Cons
    ------
    - Terrible out of the box experience as…
    - The trackpad is meh
    - Laptop gets too hot without undervolting, clocking down to 2.9-3GHz
    - Windows freezes frequently
    - Even after undervolting, it still feels a little toastier than I liked
    - Fans are quite loud under load
    - Webcam’s placement is terrible(though I don't care)

1.0 out of 5 stars Dead on Arrival

Exactly what it says on the tin. Couldn't get it to boot up at all. F2, F12 keys wouldn't respond. Laptop wouldn't work even after plugging in another keyboard or mouse. Wouldn't even register them. Was completely stuck on the motherboard screen. Tried hard reboots to no avail.

All this on top of a five day delay (on Amazon Prime no less). Was supposed to get this on the 16th, but was shipped out on that very day. Got the laptop just today the 21st.

I was expecting to run into a gamut of problems with this laptop, but I never expected THIS. This is completely unacceptable. I waited 12 days to get a laptop I should've gotten 5 days ago and now, not one hour since unboxing it, I have to return it. Just absurd. Any BRAND NEW laptop should never give anyone problems let alone a 3000 dollar one. Couldn't you guys even check it before wasting other people's time?

5.0 out of 5 stars Good quality computer!

This computer is so aesthetic. It packs a powerful performance in such a slim design, the fans are quite noisy sometimes even when not gaming or hardcore usage, but that is understandable in a computer so thin yet powerful.

It's keyboard is difficult to get used to. Specially if you're used to typing in big keyboards, but in a few days you'll definitely get used to it.

The screen is just perfect, really. Pantone Certified Display with 144Hz is just a beast and one of it's kind. You don't even need G-Sync when playing at those frame rates, it drains battery and it's not necessary.

And speaking of battery, the biggest of the gaming laptops: 94Wh battery that lasts for at least 6 to 7 hours with normal use. With gaming it lasted for over 1 hour 30 minutes which is decent.

Overall I'm very happy with this laptop, definitely would purchase it again. Recommended for picky gamers and overall productivity.
