The series gets 5 stars. The packaging for it gets one, but only because there isn't an option to give less.
The con's:
One of the major flaws with this "complete" collection is the packaging. Unlike the original dvd sets, this collection has those sharp plastic bits, just offset behind the dvd center ring, which holds the dvd's in place on both sides, within each season's box. The problem is that those plastic rings have sharp, raised bits that scratch the dvds on the opposite sides. I know, because some of my brand new, never been played discs, were very scratched due to this. At least one of which is now unplayable.
To paraphrase a character from Babylon 5: "Only an Idiot" would think that this means of packaging was a good idea. And "only the heir to the kingdom of idiots", would actually approve it for implementation.
If you get the dvd set and are lucky enough not to have any scratched discs, I highly recommend moving them into some store bought dvd cases asap.
Also, there are missing movies from this set: Legend of the Rangers and the special edition version of "The Gathering". And you might have to set your tv/dvd/blu ray player settings for 4:3 in order to watch. Otherwise, the image isn't even remotely clear or sharp. Even at 4:3 native, some of the image quality isn't all that great.
All con's aside, the series itself is actually great, featuring some acting (such as Andreas Katsulas and Walter Koenig) and writing talents (such as DC Fontana) from ST:TNG and ST:OS (at least in the first two seasons). The series Babylon 5 is a five year story, seemingly structured as individual episodes (until season 3), then becoming somewhat serialized later. J.M. Straczynski (the shows head writer and creator) once stated that he envisioned Babylon 5 as a five book/year televised novel series. And it sometimes feels like it could have very easily been a book series first.
My recommendation is this: Even if you can only watch a streamed version of it, give this series a chance. Watch from the beginning, and be patient. The story pay off's will come, and they can often be huge when they finally do.
