“Star Trek Picard: Season One” picks up after the events of “Star Trek: Nemesis” (2002), in which Data (Brent Spiner) sacrificed himself to save the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-E and future relations between the Federation and Romulus looked to be improving, and “Star Trek” (2009), in which Romulus was destroyed due to a supernova and Ambassador Spock was caught in a wormhole created to absorb the destructive energy, creating the Kelvin Timeline.

When the show begins in the Prime Timeline, Admiral Picard (Patrick Stewart) has retired from his position in Starfleet following the failure of the Romulan refugee effort (see: Una McCormick’s “Star Trek: Picard: The Last Best Hope”). Bitter and disappointed, he finds himself drawn back into galactic politics when a positronic, Soong-type android enters his life and claims to be the offspring of Data. Picard must work with robotics expert Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), Dr. Soji Asha (Isa Briones), former Starfleet lieutenant commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), civilian captain Cristóbal Rios (Santiago Cabrera), Romulan refugee Elnor (Evan Evangora), and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) to help Data’s offspring and avoid members of the Romulan diaspora, including Narek (Harry Treadaway) and Starfleet, like Commodore Oh (Tamlyn Tomita) who want to eliminate the androids following the disaster on Mars. Picking up threads from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series further explores the nature of Romulan culture and its relation to the Federation, especially now that they are a refugee society following the destruction of Romulus.

This Blu-ray steelbook contains all ten episodes of the first season as well as bonus features all in a sleek case. Bonus features include the “Star Trek: Short Treks” episode “Children of Mars,” story logs, deleted scenes, “Aliens Alive: The xBs,” a look at props, a look at set-building, a gag reel, and more. “Children of Mars” was not included in the “Star Trek: Short Treks” Blu-ray set, so it’s good that it’s here as the story is part of the backstory to the events between “Star Trek: Nemesis” and “Picard.” The series engages with the deep philosophical issues that drove stories in both the original “Star Trek” and “The Next Generation” while introducing wonderful new characters for the audience and featuring the return of fan-favorites. It draws upon traditions of quest and redemption stories, tapping into the quintessential truths that “Star Trek” has long elevated. Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman have created something that further demonstrates the continued power of “Star Trek” for examining the human condition.

Much has already been written about Season One of Picard. It brings Jean-Luc Picard twenty years from where he was at the conclusion of Star Trek: Nemesis. We also get some great flashbacks. The writing, the casting, the direction and production ... everything was on point.

****Potential Spoilers****
If I had to offer one criticism ... I think an episode count of ten will work just fine for the second and third seasons, but I think this first season would have benefited from an episode count of twelve. I say this because the first three episodes effectively serve as one large pilot for the series. As a result, the eighth episode suffers a bit and isn't allowed to breathe before jumping into the two-part season finale. Episode eight serves as the "let's bring all the characters together on the same page before we wrap up this story."

Overall - a great series and I can't wait to see where it goes in the second and third seasons. If you're going into this expecting TNG 2.0, you're either going to be pleasantly surprised or disappointed. This is not TNG 2.0, nor should it be. The extras included with the Blu-Ray are pretty sweet.

I ordered the Steelbook version of the Blu-Ray, only because on the day I ordered the regular Blu-Ray packaging wasn't available. This was my first Steelbook and I have to say I like it!

How could I not give this a five-star review? Anyone who purchases something like this without first knowing if the series is any good has their own problems. But I LOVED watching this on CBS All Access and didn't want to pay the $9.99 per month. Instead, I'd rather invest in the set and watch it over and over again. Plus, the added bonuses and the steel case are awesome.

I chose the fancy metal box for a few dollars more because Amazon's description of the regular set claimed it was one disc, not 3. I'm guessing that description was wrong. This series has a single story arc from beginning to end, and I'd suggest watching it that way. Not my favorite Star Trek series, but enjoyable anyway, and I didn't have to pay for a streaming service this way.

I preordered the blu ray for Star Trek: Picard as soon as it was listed. At that point it was not listed that the product I was preordering would be a steelbook version—only one blu ray option was available for preorder. It's not worth it to me to send this back and get the regular one but I feel slightly aggrieved that Amazon would take it upon themselves to send me the more expensive version when I didn't specifically order it.

Not to mention the steelbook case sucks. It has a terrible design where disk three is tucked behind disk two so every time I want to remove or put away disk three I also have to remove disk two.

The normal blu ray cases for Star Trek: Discovery are so much nicer with seperate holders for each disk. Assuming the regular Picard blu ray case is like that, I highly recommend buying that version instead.

If you are a Star Trek: Next Generation fan, this will interest you. That said, it begins with "not the Picard you used to know" as he is haunted and struggles from the events in Nemesis and thereafter. The story telling in this is a lot of fun and well done and there are a large number of much welcomed cameos. I strongly recommend this.

Since it was first announced late in 2019 and premiered in late-January of 2020, Star Trek: Picard has become, on par with its predecessor, Star Trek: The Next Generation, my top personal-favorite of all the Star Trek shows. It's such a fantastic show, and the audiovisual quality is just fantastic on Blu-Ray Disc! Additionally, the bonus features are very intriguing. I for one strongly recommend Picard on Blu-Ray Disc.
