Another exciting adventure from the #1 New York Times best-selling series!

The darkest secrets are the hardest to bring to light....

Sylvestri Yarrow is on a streak of bad luck with no end of sight. She’s been doing her best to keep the family cargo business going after her mom’s death, but between mounting debt and increasing attacks by the Nihil on unsuspecting ships, Syl is in danger of losing all she has left of her mother. She heads to the galactic capital of Coruscant for help, but gets sidetracked when she’s drawn into a squabble between two of the Republic’s most powerful families over a patch of space on the frontier. Tangled up in familial politics is the last place Syl wants to be, but the promise of a big payoff is enough to keep her interested…

Meanwhile, Jedi Knight Vernestra Rwoh has been summoned to Coruscant, but with no idea of why or by whom. She and her Padawan Imri Cantaros arrive at the capital along with Jedi Master Cohmac Vitus and his Padawan, Reath Silas―and are asked to assist with the property dispute on the frontier. But why? What is so important about an empty patch of space? The answer will lead Vernestra to a new understanding of her abilities, and take Syl back to the past…and to truths that will finally come out of the shadows.

“Containing a dizzying number of overarching storylines and characters, this latest installment set in the High Republic era nonetheless excels…Per usual, Ireland’s firm grasp of this universe keeps it all from running amok. An essential tome for die-hard
Star Wars fans, although others will find much to enjoy.” -- Kirkus Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Eighteen-year-old hauler Sylvestri lost her mother to the Nihil and then her ship is lost after it is pulled out of hyperspace. While trying to get Coruscant authorities to listen, she receives a suspicious offer from the uber-wealthy Graf family—an offer connected to the mother it seems Syl didn't know at all. Meanwhile, Syl's ex-girlfriend Jordanna is exhausted defending a settlement the Nihil keep attacking and wishes she could win Syl back. She links up with the Jedi who come to her aid, including 17-year-old Vernestra, a green-skinned Mirialan who has Force visions that may lead her to the truth about the Nihil's weapon. When they, along with with several other characters, meet up, they must survive a journey into the heart of the Nihil mystery. Assuming familiarity with the High Republic—era Star Wars universe, this book features multiple viewpoints and venues, and focuses on plot and suspense rather than action and description. Combining multi-strand storytelling with an extensive cast can make the plot occasionally confusing, though still enthralling. Depth of character development varies, with most attention paid to Vernestra and Sylvestri, who have the most compelling plot lines. The mostly human main characters have a variety of skin tones and hair colors/textures, like Syl's "dark skin" and "wild, kinky curls" and Jordanna's "sandy-hued skin" and "long, dark, curly hair." VERDICT This complex and suspenseful but occasionally confusing story and its compelling characters will appeal most to fans of the Star Wars franchise and of mysteries.—Rebecca Moore, The Overlake Sch., Redmond, WA

This is one of the young-adult novels set in the high republic era, set after the events of the novel The Rising Storm, and the Nihil attack on the Republic fair. The aftermath of the attack is still being felt by pretty much all parties. The book is centered around the characters of Vernestra Rwoh and her padawan Imri, both of whom are trying to deal with force abilities that they cannot control and are struggling to understand, and Sylvestri Yarrow a hauler whose ship was mysteriously knocked out of Hyperspace and then attacked by the Nihil at the beginning of the novel. It also involves the already established Jedi characters Reath Silas and Cohmac Vitus. It also brings back the Nihil character Nan who was saved by and then saved Reath in the novel Into the Dark.

This novel is partly about the power struggle within the Nihil and a battle for control of the group and in part a thriller/mystery with the Jedi trying to figure out if the Nihil has a new weapon or if ships are getting knocked out of hyperspace due to some strange natural occurrence. I definitely think the book reads more easily now that many of the characters are established, as I had to spend less time trying to figure out (or remember) who all the characters were. I still think these novels would be better if they did more than name-drop Yoda. It does not make any sense that one of the most powerful Jedi at what is likely the height of his power would sit on the sidelines of the fight against the Nihil just to be mentioned by other characters. Not that he needs to be the focus of the novels, but he could definitely be utilized in some way.

Overall, I would say that even though the novel is one of the young-adult novels, and thus considered ancillary to the main storyline, it is as good and as enjoyable as the main "adult" novels in the high-republic series. It is not a difficult read, and at about 320 pages, depending on how fast a reader you are, it can be finished pretty quickly. I definitely recommend it.

If you are even mildly interested in the High Republic, the story progress in this book is not to be missed! Even more than The Rising Storm, it feels like this novel takes the narrative to the next level by introducing the Graf family, a wealthy family of galactic power brokers whose competition with the San Tekka clan goes back centuries to the great Hyperspace Rush. This rivalry injects a fascinating set of new players into the saga, advances Mari San Tekka’s story, and makes us reconsider much of what we’ve learned about the hero and villain dynamics between the Nihil, the Jedi, and the Republic at this stage in the narrative.

All this new intrigue is explored by a cast of teenage characters (Vern and Imri from Test of Courage, Reath Silas from Into the Dark, and the debut of Sylvestri Yarrow — an instantly likable hardluck hauler on the Outer Rim who gets sucked into the duplicity and drama between the various factions). As with all young adult fiction, our protagonists are constantly analyzing their every thought and interaction for clues about their identity, purpose, and place in the world. These conversations and reflections range from insightful and even groundbreaking musings about the nature of the Force, conflict, and justice to typically sophomoric romantic angst. The trademark diversity and inclusivity that has been a hallmark of this series is once again on exemplary display. Awesome work!

Overall, I found this to be the best pageturner of the series since the Light of the Jedi. I suppose I’m just a sucker for a political thriller and Justina Ireland delivers, expertly weaving together characters and plot lines from all of the preceding work while bringing in another deeper layer that will certainly shape all that follows. It’s fun to see how the adult characters like Avar Kriss and Stellan Gios are seen by the kids and suffice it to say I am now even more excited for the upcoming Lourna Dee audio drama from Cavan Scott.

One star is docked as the structure of the novel lets readers in on a few key secrets before our heroes in a way that robs some of the mystery and makes their exploration of possibilities drag a bit since we already know more than them. That said, there is a lot to know and I loved seeing the narrative advance in such bold ways here. Thank you Justina Ireland and the Project Luminous team. This is great stuff. Keep it coming!

A much entry into the YA genre of Star Wars than the last, Into The Dark, the characters are interesting and the over all story is great. The discussions of different
Perspectives is great and is the only thing I like in 'Into the Dark. The ending as me interested in the implications on the other stories The high Republic.

This book is the first of the series to reap what was sown by the others, and it shines for it. The questions risen by the Jedi recent actions or inactions are really interesting. The characters, new or old, are interesting. Their feelings and musings really help developing them in an interesting and meaningful way.

Can’t wait for the rest !
