Kaibab HD 18x56 Binoculars (KAI-5618)
The Kaibab HD is the ultimate long-distance western-hunting binocular series. When serious patience and superior optics are required to locate trophy animals at extreme distances, the Kaibab HD delivers the premium-quality, high-magnification optical performance you need to get the job done. Intended to be used with a tripod for extended, comfortable, rock-steady viewing. Ultracomfortable twist-up eyecups are perfect for long glassing sessions. Visually tear apart open landscapes in pursuit of tough-to-locate trophy big game with the Kaibab HD.
Adjust Eyecups & IPD
Enjoy comfortable viewing even if you wear eyeglasses. Simply twist the eyecups up or down to see the full field of view. Keep the eyecups fully extended if you aren’t wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses.
The IPD (interpupillary distance) is the distance between the centers of the left and right pupil. Your binocular also has an IPD. To see a single image free of shading, rotate your binocular until its IPD aligns with your eyes.
Focus Your Binocular
For the best views, use the center focus and diopter to adjust for vision differences in each eye. Choose an object that is about 20 yards away from you and perform this two-step process:
- Close your right eye or cover the right objective lens with your hand. Look at the object with your left eye and adjust the center focus dial until the image is in focus.
- Close your left eye or cover the left objective lens with your hand and rotate the ring until the object is in focus.
Lens Care
Follow this two-step process to gently clean the exterior lenses of your binocular.
- Blow away any dust or grit before wiping the lens. Use a can of pressurized air, soft camel hair brush, or acrylic optical brush.
- Gently remove smudges, fingerprints, and eyelash oil from the lens. Use a small amount of water or your breath to moisten the lens then wipe away smudges with a clean lens cloth. Isopropyl alcohol can help remove marks like fingerprints.

Yes they are a bit heavy but most of my glassing is from inside a stand so not an issue. I could imagine that walking with them all day glassing would require a tripod.
They come with a really handy tripod adapter and when I opened the parts bag, a small lock washer fell out and disappeared on my living room rug. Unable to find it, I emailed Vortex and within just a couple days they had a replacement washer delivered to my door. Great product and excellent service. Money well spent.
Just for info, I was able to use these today w/o a tripod; if you brace yourself against a tree, door frame, etc. you can hold them still enough for short periods to identify game. The tripod converter that came with it will make it easier to use, though.
And I also got this one, the Kiabab 18x56, to give that a chance to save me some money. My 8x56 Swarovski's show both of these Vortex products to be inferior to a large degree; not minor. Enough to help me justify spending/investing $2550.00.
Had I never gotten the taste of the Swarovskis these would be fine, I guess, maybe.. They're tiring to use, and I don't mean the weight. But I finally bought the Swarovski 15x56. Oh man. Oh man. I know I know. That's a lot o' money to justify unless one wants the best binoculars. I was kinda shocked at the difference in clarity and *everything*.
So I just pass this along to anyone wanting really good binoculars; I'd say the best but what do I know.
I've progressed to night sky glassing and so wanted at least 15X56, I'm not interested in telescopes at this point. Of course, one has to use a tripod for this power for truest clarity.
Heavy but not to bad I used them without a tripod just to spot elk,
