Karr is a teenage boy like many others in the galaxy. He goes to school, helps his parents with the family business, likes speeders and droids. But Karr also has a secret: when he touches certain objects, he gets searing headaches and blacks out. And along with the pain sometimes come visions of people he doesn’t know and places he’s never been.

Karr’s parents worry that he’s sick; his grandmother is convinced the visions come from the Force. But it’s been years since anyone has heard from the last of the Jedi―Luke Skywalker. Are there any Jedi left to guide Karr in the use of his abilities? Is anyone even willing to talk about the Jedi and what happened to them, as their memory continues to fade and the First Order rises? Stuck on his isolated home planet, Karr becomes a collector of historical artifacts, hoping to one day find an object that will give him a vision about the secrets of the Jedi.

When his grandmother dies and his parents announce they’re sending him away to a school on the other side of the planet, Karr reaches his breaking point. He needs to know what his destiny holds, and whether the Jedi are involved. Accompanied by Maize, the blunt, unpredictable new girl at school with ties to the First Order, and RZ-7, Karr’s solicitous droid companion, he sets off into the larger galaxy to find the truth. His adventures will take him from Utapau to Jakku to Takodana and beyond as he learns more about the Jedi than he could have expected…and about his own place in the Force.

This is a young adult novel which is ancillary to the "main" canon storyline, set sometime before The Force Awakens. It is a bit different in that sense from the other "Journey to the [insert movie title]" in that most of the others have been set in between the last movie and the next one, so this would be better under the "Journey to The Force Awakens" than The Rise of Skywalker. The novel is centered around a force-sensitive teenager named Karr who can see history by touching items and runs away from home with his friend, the daughter of a First-Order officer and his droid to find items linked to the Jedi, in hopes to find a living Jedi to train him. It is, of course, set at a time when Luke Skywalker is in exile, and for some strange reason, the only memory of the Jedi seem to be of those who were around before the clone war and much of what people do remember of the Jedi is through the lens of disinformation that the Empire used to tarnish their Jedi's collective reputation.

Even though the book is one of the young-adult novels, it is long enough (about 370 pages) and good enough that adults can find it enjoyable too. Through his travels, the main character visits different locations from the prequels, the original trilogy, and the sequel trilogy. It contains events from the movies, sometimes from a different perspective from what was shown in the particular movie scene. The story flows well, and if you are a fast reader it is pretty easy to get through in a few days, or less. Chances are if you collect all the hardcover novels as they come out you will get this anyway. If you are one who only gets some, but not all, of the young-adult novels, I definitely think this one is worth the purchase.

What a fun read. Fun characters, good bits of nostalgia and adventurous.
It is what star wars is about. Kevin Shining takes the reader on a journey of discovery, friendship
And noble truths.
From beginning to end, it navigates the reader through hyper space, planets and destinations and discovered
secrets as well.
Loved it.

If you have seen all of the Star Wars movies, and still likes the series, and you are over the age of ten, this book could very well be part of your starter set for expanding your knowledge of the current Disney expanded universe canon. For avid readers, its a light 1-3 day job that keeps up a good pace and constant intrigue a la the the gold standard of youth reading, Harry Potter.

THE FORCE COLLECTOR is the story of young Karr Nuq Sin, our protagonist born with the force talent of psychometry (much like the young lead of similarly accessible Star Wars hit video game JEDI: FALLEN ORDER, Cal Kestis). As he embarks on his journey, guided by a trail of force imbued objects, what otherwise might not be much more than a series of fetch quests, ends up being a poignant personal journey of self discovery for Karr.

How enjoyable this book turned out to be was a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.

I just love how Karr is looking at the whole Star Wars time period. I also love how it brings back so many Clone Wars references and episodes. That is amazing for a big Star Wars fan like me! I really like Karr's character. I miss green lightsabers. I was so happy when I finished it! We have not a Jedi that can look at an object's past in a long time! It is also good for kids to read! Great book for me! Enjoy!

There’s little in “Star Wars: Force Collector” that you haven’t already read in other, better “Star Wars” novels. Yet I’ll give writer Kevin Shinick credit: for all the book’s familiarity in both plotting and character-work, it’s rarely un-engaging. Part of that has to do with the ways that Shinick ties the story into the broader “Star Wars” canon, dropping in cameos and locations from the films every chance he gets (honestly, some of his references feels a little TOO fan-servicey, but hey – it’s a tie-in book). Part of it almost certainly also has to do with the straight-forward prose, which is clearly aimed at a younger reading audience. Both of these things combine to make a book that is, if not exactly thrilling reading, at least consistently and sufficiently appealing.

Bottom line: if you’re a die-hard “Star Wars” nut, you’ll probably find at least one or two cool little nuggets in here that will make you glad that you checked it out. And if you don’t read it, that’s okay – this is far from essential “Star Wars” reading.

How’s that for a sorta-kinda-maybe recommendation?

As an adult, I wish all of these books were written for adults. Because I love the universe and think that teens can handle an adult novel about star wars -- as I read Dune and other science fiction novels that weren't simplified at a young age. That's my only critique about this.

********* Spoilers **********

This basically has the potential to be the origin story of the "Professor X" in the star wars universe post-rise of skywalker.

Kid's also going to be a tailor and could make improvements to the Jedi robe design. Create his own temple, etc.

I hope that's the route they take this anyway. Then I hope as Kaar grows up so does the audience they write the books for.
