5.0 out of 5 stars The Best and only Star Trek Game In A Long Time
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2013
Whether you're a die-hard Star Trek fan, a fan of just the recent J.J. Abrams reboot films or just a casual gamer this game will have something for you. It definitely benefits from having a lot of the creative team behind the most recent films onboard to develop this game. It looks, feels and sounds like you're taking part in one of the films. It looks even better if you're lucky like me and have a 3D TV! It's action-packed but still allows you time to look around the different environments. For me I'd say the best part of this is getting to walk around pretty much the whole of the Enterprise. You get to see locations from the film, such as the bridge and sickbay, but also other parts of the ship you've either never seen before or haven't seen much of.

Gameplay-wise, you get the choice of playing either Kirk or Spock (although both are usually alongside each other anyway, so I'm guessing this is solely down to different abilities!). So far, I've only played the game through as Kirk. Most of the action involves you using your phaser, but you do get to collect various other weapons along the way. Having said that, a lot of bonus objectives do require you, in true Star Trek style, to only stun or otherwise subdue enemies rather than outright kill them. You even get to use the Enterprise herself and her weapons at one point!

Lastly, I really loved the fact that they went out of their way and recorded the voices of every single cast member from the films (watching a behind-the-scenes video online, I found out they had to track down each actor all over the world as they were understandably away shooting other things at the time!). I've played previous Star Trek games and they've really suffered when using different actors. A word of advice to players, be on the lookout for various hidden objects scattered throughout the game, especially communicators. Some of these, especially in the levels on the Enterprise, feature recordings of the main characters and add a little more back-story to them. I felt the best of these came from Chekov, as he speaks about the crew's prejudice to him being so young and "the kid".

Overall, a top-notch game which will hopefully lead to more Star Trek games for the PS3.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually, Okay.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 2, 2020
I guess upon original release, at full price pretty much every reviewers sent a copy was reluctant to rate this game very highly for obvious reasons - its not the greatest game you're ever going to play, but used - for a few quid - its actually very enjoyable. It's not the most challenging thing you're ever going to play but sometimes all you want is something that just gets on with it, A-B. Gameplay is highly liniar, controls are a little clunky - I don't know about co-op and multiplayer mode, but playing off-line playing as either Playable character (Kirk or Spock) with the games inbuilt AI works okay. The story's not that bad, ties in with the onscreen world of the current film franchise well and re-introduces the Gorn as credible villains rather than the big, green bulky-guy in the lizard mask Bill Shatner had to fight in the OS episode "Arena".

Not great, not taxing but find of fun, I enjoyed it.

Coming off a binge of PS1 era Tomb Raider its just so nice playing something where you aren't dying, literally, every 3 minutes and its nice the fact they actually originated an original story for the game, not try to piggy-back it off whatever ongoing movie release - plus the vocal cast features the current cast, some of the dialogue is rather snappy - there's a nice line where Kirk comments how he like a female character and Spock retorts: "There are females you don't like?" - its cheesy and doesn't take itself terribly seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as people think. Take a chance on it.

I read the poor reviews for this and was put off when it was still full price.

However, I'm a massive Star Trek fan and when I saw it again last year for a couple of quid I thought why not.

I'm glad I took the chance. OK it has glitches here and their but nothing that gets in the way of the fun, just persevere and it is a tremendously enjoyable game.

Also from a Trek fan point of view IT'S CANNON!

3.0 out of 5 stars The potential of this game was as high as my disappointment
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 5, 2014
I've only played this in multiplayer with my brother, but I can assure you this game was not meant for multiplayer splitscreen. I was so excited to see that the real actors were voicing the characters, and that the game characters were modelled after the 2009 reboot actors, but this game has let me down.

Firstly I'll say, I've not finished the game yet (for various reasons), so I cannot say whether the game redeems itself towards the end. Maybe it will. But so far, I've been disappointed. The splitscreen gaming is difficult, and could have been handled much better, perhaps even getting rid of the splitscreen all together - I'm not a game designer, so I don't know. But what I do know is that the experience hasn't been as exciting as I originally thought it would be.

The game itself is probably 70% video clips, 30% actual gaming. You could play for 5 minutes, then there's another video clip. 2 minutes gaming, another video clip. Why are there so many??? Let me play the game?!! I also feel that in some of the video clips, the voice acting is a little awkward, but perhaps the actors are just better on screen. That's just my opinion though.

But don't let me put you off, there are some great aspects of the game, such as the full body view of the characters (no first person) which I wasn't expecting with this game, a good range of weapons, and even the plot is pretty good. I just think it could have been executed so much better, and if they'd put more time into it, the graphics would be a lot better as well (yeah, I was disappointed with the quality). I also liked the teamwork aspect of the game, when one person had to do one job, and the other had to do another job in order to progress further.

All in all, the plot line is good, the teamwork is fun, but I am disappointed at how poorly this game has been executed, low quality graphics and poor splitscreen coverage being a main source of my discontent.

I would recommend this game to younger Star Trek reboot fans.
