Product Description
From Emmy® Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, Ted, Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. It's crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship's Captain, Ed Mercer, and Adrianne Palicki (Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Friday Night Lights) as his ex-wife, who's assigned as his First Officer. Additional cast members include Penny Johnson Jerald (24, The Larry Sanders Show), Scott Grimes (American Dad!, Justified), Peter Macon (Shameless, Bosch), Halston Sage (Neighbors, Goosebumps), J Lee (American Dad!, The Cleveland Show), Mark Jackson (That Royal Today) and Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead, The Wire). "An earnestly crafted sci-fi adventure that gives audiences a blend of spacefaring action, laugh-out-loud comedy and all of humanity's complications..." - Cinema Blend

Somehow, in the past decade or so, the science fiction genre has been flooded with an angsty, pessimistic, and preachy glut. Most of it is focussed on brain-dead action for other global markets or pushing modern, divisive social agendas.
The Orville offers none of that. Sure, there are topical issues discussed throughout the series but it never comes off as severely dated or blatantly stating “This is objectively right or wrong and YOU should feel this way about it.”
The cast is AMAZING! Seriously, everyone on the show is top-notch.
Captain Ed Mercer, Seth himself, plays a down-on-his-luck commander that finally catches a break - a year after he walks in on his wife cheating on him with a blue alien. This break comes in the form of receiving his first command of a starship in the Planetary Union (see: Starfleet), the eponymous U.S.S. Orville.
He brings along his slightly dysfunctional-but-badass pilot best friend, Gordon Malloy (played by Scott Grimes — there had better be a Critters episode in Season 3!), to helm the ship. Malloy is instantly likable and becomes fast friends with the navigator, John Lamarr (played by J. Lee - of The Cleveland Show). It turns out, Lamarr is actually a genius and downplays his prowess to maintain acceptance among his friends.
The ship’s doctor, Claire Finn (played by Penny Johnson Jerald — Commander Sisko’s former love interest in Deep Space Nine!), has an authoritative, almost motherly presence, among the crew. She’s the “adult” in this cast of lovable jokesters.
Next we have the small-but-incredibly-tough security officer, Alara Kitan (played the lovely Halston Sage). She belongs to an alien race that feels like part-Vulcan and part-Kryptonian. Her waify stature and incredible strength provide a lot of comedic opportunities. The running gag with Captain Mercer, “Alara, can you open this jar of pickles for me?” makes its appearance in multiple episodes.
Commander Bortus (played Peter Macon - The Shield) is one of my favourites! He belongs to a face of male-only aliens that feels like part-Klingon and part-Sontaran (Doctor Who). His stoic presence is often contrasted by his alien cultural and biological differences and the dichotomy works perfectly! His lifemate, Klyden (played by Chad Coleman —The Walking Dead), creates a lot of conflict in his life and it’s hilarious watching the two of them trying to adapt to a human culture and workspace.
“Isaac” is the synthetic science officer of the crew. He’s basically a compassionate version of Lt. Commander Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation. His just-the-facts approach makes him a brutally honest voice of reason among the crew.
Finally, there’s Commander Kelly Grayson (played by the amazing Adrianne Palicki). She is the cheating ex-wife of Captain Mercer and was initially his greatest foil. Despite this, she quickly became one of the most likable characters in the show. She’s a capable commander and has a razor-sharp wit. She’s tough, hilarious, and works as an excellent “Number One” to Mercer. Plus, she’s considered a god in some alien cultures.
The episodes are reminiscent of Star Trek: The Next Generation (with a side order of MacFarlane comedy). As someone that greatly dislikes the direction Star Trek has taken in recent years, The Orville definitely satisfies the void left in that fandom.
Where as the like of “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Picard” feel like preachy, edgelord pessimism, The Orville stays faithful to an optimistic future where the conflicts arise from without. The characters are all likable and memorable. I honestly can’t remember more than 2-3 characters’ names in either of the latest Star Trek series.
This is an excellent starting point for any Trekkies/Trekkers that dislike the current incarnations of Star Trek and are looking for a great sci-fi series in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s creative works.
Great series cocreated by Brannan Braga and Seth MacFarlane. First sci-fi comedy-drama.
- Quick update: It's unfortunately been confirmed that Fox no longer releases any of their shows on Blu-ray. If you want to legally watch these in HD (which for any sci-fi show is basically REQUIRED), you either have to stream them or just remember not to delete them from your DVR.
OK, this is not just the best sci-fi show on TV, but my absolute favorite running now. It even beats Star Trek: Discovery (which is horrible) in both visual quality & writing, with a MUCH smaller budget. The show uses a lot of actual physical models of ships, like the original Star Wars movies, mixed with amazing CGI.
Most haters don't understand that this is a **PARODY** of Star Trek: The Next Generation and refuse to look past the first season. Yes season 1 was more juvenile, but starting with season 2 it became much darker with a LOT of very emotional character-driven episodes. The stories still have a lot of humor, but not too much in bad taste (except the second one). Fart & penis jokes are completely gone.
As far as the second season, I will admit that the first episode had a bit of a soap-opera feel, and the second episode with the Bortus orgy (BTW - He's not gay, his entire race is all male) was a bit too much. But once you're past them, it becomes AMAZING. Amazing acting, writing, and space battles fill the last 12 episodes. There are sad shows, shocking ones....like I said, it's amazing!
MANY actors from most of the Star Trek shows make appearances, several of which aren't just cameos and are major parts of the story. Jonathan Frakes directed an amazing episode which had Marina Sirtis in it, and even Jason Alexander & Patrick Warburton from Seinfeld are in a few episodes!
Don't like Gordon, and want him gone? Trust me, after you see him in season 2, you'll be glad he stayed!
If you're able to stream these, or can just download them, you need to do so for the second season (and make sure you watch them IN ORDER, since the season is very story-driven).
Give the show a chance, and trust me, you'll like it! Let's just hope it doesn't take another year for the season 2 DVDs....
