Editorial Reviews

Review

“I loved this book - a non judgemental, fun, inspiring approach to how we can do our bit for the planet, whilst acknowledging that we are all human! Full of practical tips and advice - this is a brilliant book for anyone with climate anxiety.” ―Thomasina Miers OBE - Masterchef winner, writer, environmentalist, television presenter, cook and co-founder of the Wahaca chain of Mexican street food restaurants.

“The most family friendly way to start doing your bit” ―
The Sunday Times

“This user-friendly book offers plenty of practical guidelines about how we can live more sustainable lives - and save money at the same time ... From turning off our household products - devices on standby cost UK households £227m per annum - to being mindful of all the food we waste, a more sustainable way of life seems to be easy to attain.” ―
Irish Independent

About the Author

Jen Gale is an ordinary, knackered mum of two whose life changed when she dragged and cajoled the family into a year buying nothing new. That year changed not only what she buys, but also how she sees her place in the world. Jen recognized the power that we all have as individuals to make a difference to the things we care about, simply through getting informed about the impact of our daily choices, and figuring out easy swaps and changes. The family are still (just about) talking to her and they live in Wiltshire where Jen writes and podcasts about all things Sustainable(ish).

Hello!

I'm Jen and I'm not entirely sure how to describe myself...

Sometimes I think I'm an environmental campaigner, but other times that label feels like a but much to live up to - like I should be constantly out on the streets waving a placard, or writing powerful letters to the PM.

Sometimes I say I'm a sustainable living advocate or champion, and while I kind of am, I can't help but feel like that 'title' sounds a bit worthy, and hair-shirty.

So what do I do?

All kinds of stuff...

I blog, write, podcast, speak, and live about all things Sustainable(ish).

I run. Sometimes.

I bake. A lot.

I ferry the kids back and forth.

I shout (at the kids). Too much.

I drink tea. Buckets of it.

I was once on TV with Nadiya from Bake Off (#truth).

I spend way too much time on social media.

I live in Wiltshire with my husband, our two kids, a dog, a cat, seven chickens and an 81 year old tortoise.

I'm an ordinary, knackered mum and ex-vet who once dragged the family along with a year buying nothing new, blogged about it and found her voice and her 'thing'.

I'm no different to every other knackered mum out there, starting to feel maybe the first twinges of 'eco-anxiety', wondering what the future holds for her kids, feeling helpless and insignificant.

But we're not helpless, our actions are not insignificant.

If I create change, so can you. It all starts with that first step, and continues one step at a time.

We need to let go of this idea of 'perfection', or the fact that caring about the planet is only for the likes of Swampy (does anyone remember Swampy, or am I showing my age here?).

Sustainable living, or at least Sustainable(ish) living is for all of us - we don't need to do it perfectly, we don't need to go from where we are now to full on vegan, off grid, car-free living. But we DO need to make a start.

I hope the Sustainable(ish) Living Guide inspires you, and that more than anything it helps to nudge you into action. In the words of one of my all time favourite people Greta Thunberg, "we don't need hope, we need action". Remembering your coffee cup or your water bottle, resisting the lure of yet another pair of shoes, choosing the veggie option next time you're out for a meal. It really does matter.

You can come and join in the fun, and help me to justify all the time I spend on social media, by coming and saying hi!

Super accessible guide packed with useful info and great tips on how to start making the small changes that many of us want to make but often make us feel a bit overwhelmed. Despite being Uk focussed the tips and suggestions are still very relevant wherever you live. Jens writing style is down to earth and honest. I’m zooming through the book now but know I’ll be picking it up on a regular basis to keep me focussed on becoming more sustainable (ish).

The plastics chapter is full of clear misinformation meaning that it is disproven by hundreds of peer-reviewed articles. It is a real shame because we need solid information if we want to make sensible choices for a better future.

Dr Simon Jennison
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, packed with ideas
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 16, 2023
I really enjoyed this. It’s full of great ideas that are clearly explained and very straightforward to action. Jen’s writing style is wonderful, it’s not dry at all. She makes living a more sustainable life more accessible and is forgiving about the areas you feel you really struggle with. Her Facebook page and Sustainable(ish) Clubhouse are also brilliant - being part of a community of people all working on becoming greener is both energising and forgiving of human imperfections. Book and group very highly recommended.

very good read, lovely sense of humor. Very interesting. We have implemented a few things and think before picking up certain things in the shops. So enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars An encouraging and practical book on sustainability
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 15, 2023
I love the fact that the author encourages without preaching and highlights that you can implement changes however if at times the change isn't practical it is ok to not adhere to it. Making changes and sticking to it moist of the time will make a difference and small steps on a journey will all help us develop habits that will make us more sustainable along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really accessible
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2021
The premise for this book is fantastic - we don't have to do it all perfectly. It has chapters on the key topics with lots of bullet point suggestions. This makes it really easy to use the book as a reference guide but equally it is one you could read cover to cover. I love that I can go back and find what I am looking for really easily. It is an absolute treasure trove of resources and ideas - loads of links to websites. It is one of the few books on the subject of sustainability that doesn't leave you feeling really down on yourself. It's one of those books I leave in the smallest room and find people are intrigued and learn something - much easier than preaching about recycling etc! It is the perfect tool for sneaky activism!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas to get me started
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2020
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book which has numerous ideas and suggestions on how to live a more sustainable way of life. I must admit it will take a long time to adopt many of the ideas and change our way of life but as the author does stress 'simply do it one step at a time' which is certainly the best method. I found I was very naïve on how the Charity shops have to deal with the goods they have deposited on their doorsteps and it has made me reassess on how I will buy new items in the future. I read the book a couple of months before Covid19 struck our shores and it has helped me to manage the stress of dealing and buying food and daily essentials.
