A book by a veteran Samurai to young warriors who had not tasted battle. The man known as a sword saint, Tsukahara Bokuden 1489-1571, composed this work seventy-five years before Miyamoto Musashi's Book of Five Rings. Bokuden studied Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto School and later founded the Kashima Shinto School of sword fighting. This book, which consists of a hundred songs, was transmitted to Samurai who had not yet fought in battle. In the early 1600s a forward was written by the Zen Priest Takuan Soho. Later the eighth Tokugawa Shogun Yoshimune added an introduction. This is the first English translation of this work and it is presented beside the original Japanese brush script. The English will be on the facing page. According to the afterward, for several generations this document was only transmitted to only one other person.

Once again, Eric Shahan has made a tremendously significant contribution to the available English-language source material on the life and philosophy of the samurai. Unlike the overwhelming majority of authors publishing in this domain today, Eric actually translated this manuscript directly from the original Japanese to English. I can't overstate the degree to which this (a) increases the fidelity of the English rendering and (b) is exceedingly rare. Most authors publishing source material on the ninja or samurai are (at best!) working with modern Japanese translations of the original classical texts. Naturally, the more links there are between the original and the English, the more opportunities there are for things to get misinterpreted. None of these issues are present in Eric's work here.

As for the text itself, The Hundred Rules of War are a collection of insights transmitted from one of Japanese history's greatest warriors, Tsukahara Bokuden. The idioms range from philosophical to practical, and can be treated as daily meditations for both practitioners of Japanese martial arts and those that have an interest in applying the Japanese warrior's mindset to their lives.

As someone that's been studying the samurai and ninja for approaching a decade now, I feel comfortable saying that this should be considered a mandatory addition to any self-respecting Japanophile's bookshelf.

Great Book, it's a pretty quick read with some neat nuanced rules you'd never think about! Highly recommend it!

A great translation of Tsukahara Bokuden's work by Eric Shahan. Detailed view of the original text on one side and a translation on the other. Though it may seem very basic to many, it is a great supplement for detailed historical research on Samurai History.

It was a fast read. Every other page was the original Japanese text paired next to the translation. A good bit of knowledge in the writing. A must read for anyone into preparedness. Similar to the Art of War by Sun Tzu but much shorter, and geared toward the individual.

The art of war is 1000% more valuable as is the 5rings. This is just ramblings about horses and other such things. Historical interest maybe pending your jam, but for me only a very few interesting bits.

Eric has once again written another great book the translation of Bokuden's classic treatise on Japanese swordsmanship that enabled many a student to reach their peaks of performance. This book flows with an amazing amount of knowledge and history that brings to light the techniques of the "Sword Saint" Tsukahara Bokuden

4.0 out of 5 stars An unusual interesting Book

This book contains the japanese original and an annotated translation. It makes for an interesting but short read (The page number is inflated by the fact that the japanese original takes up a lot of space and the translation ist then mostly less than a half page.)
