It was super easy to set up, both on my computer and my iPhone. The online "dashboard" (which you get for free!) has a wealth of information. From how many calories you've burned, to a break down of how long in a day you've been inactive/lightly active/fairly active/very active, etc. You can also set a goal of how much weight you want to lose (if any) from .5 lb/wk to 2 lb/wk. After setting that, there is a dynamic tool which tells you, based on how much activity you've done and thus how many calories you've burned, how many calories you have remaining to consume and still hit your weight loss goal. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this. If I've worked out for 2 hours, I'm just not going to be able to stick to that low calorie target all the time. This accounts for that, and increases how many calories you can eat, while still hitting your goal! LOVED this.
That this device can be used on an iPhone app is WONDERFUL. The iPhone app does everything the dashboard does, and syncs via bluetooth if you aren't near your computer but want to upload your data to adjust your calories burned/calories available on the go. Can't rave enough about this.
I also love that you can sync this up with sparkpeople. If you also use that website, this is an even easier tool to use! Any food you input on sparkpeople is automatically imported to your fitbit account after you've linked your device to sparkepople. I like this because I feel the massive database of food on sparkpeople dwarfs even the very good fitbit database. Also, you can automatically import the activity information from your fitbit to your sparkpeople account, taking out a lot of the guesswork. I love this!
In addition to linking with sparkpeople, you can become friends with other fitbit users and "challenge" each other to hit certain targets (this is in addition to being able to set your own targets for just about everything!). I don't know anyone with a fitbit so I haven't tried this feature yet, but I would think this would be an even bigger motivator!
While it doesn't track this automatically, the dashboard also has a database of activities, so if you go biking or do yoga (activities the fitbit is not meant to track) you can add that into your dashboard and account for those burned calories, too. They've really thought of everything with this little guy.
I know others had mentioned problems with opening the back of the fitbit and it breaking. I did not have a problem with that, but did proceed cautiously because of these reviews - perhaps its a question of force?
In any case, it has definitely motivated me to be more conscious of my level of activity, and that is exactly what I wanted. I can't recommend this enough!
The website and device automatically sync when close to your computer (or phone, I think, but I don't use mine with my phone) to an approximated average total calories burned per day, taking BMR into account. This is one of the most frustrating things about using so many free fitness websites; you often are really subtracting more workout calories than is realistic because there is no accounting for BMR, or "added" calories burned vs. total calories burned. Since the fitbit is on you all day, it adjusts your total calories burned really well.
The screen is kind of like an old tamagatchi. It only has a few options, and no buttons - you just tap the front or side of the device to change screens. Total daily steps, total daily calories burned, total daily miles walked/run and time are the four main screens, as well as a little smiley face that changes based on your activity. You can remove any screen through the website. The little silicone clip it comes with is nice (and necessary). I do prefer it in two pieces as opposed to a clip directly attached to the device. You can replace a cover if the clip starts to loosen, breaks etc.
The website really seamlessly integrates all this information into attractive, easy to understand graphs and figures. The food log is easy to use and it breaks your activity level up into 15 minute increments, so you can see how many calories you burned in the 15 minutes you were sitting vs. the 15 minutes you were running. For example, mine usually says I am burning 14 calories per 15 minute period sitting. I burn about 2-3x as many calories walking around at work vs. sitting, about 6x as many calories walking the dog vs. sitting and more than 10x as many running vs. sitting. I find this method of comparison really motivating, because you do see how things add up over time. You can also use your stride length to get a more precise idea of distance traveled. The device is great at catching all your steps, so the most important factor playing into distance precision is how accurately you measure your stride length, or how much your stride length might vary each run. It only calculates distance as stride length x steps taken, as far as I know.
I find that this meets my needs while running really well. Competitive runners will want something like a GPS watch to record pace, distance etc., but for the market fitbit is designed for I think it's executed very well and at an extremely reasonable price. It is also sweat and rain proof, and the clip is sturdy. As for walking, I do find it motivating and I notice that since using it I consciously park my car farther away, take the dog on longer walks or walk to the grocery store instead of drive.
Most importantly, I think just wearing this thing makes you more conscious of your health. It is harder to ignore exercise and a healthy diet when you've got something counting every step you take. I love it!
