I really enjoyed the series. I enjoyed the fact that Mr. Lucas added historical context by the extras that were made in 2007/08. They really set the stage. so to speak, and let you know what was really going on in the world. I wish the series would have continued until Indiana finished college and maybe go back and see some more of the trip when he was child.

Erst einmal ein großes Lob und Dank an meinen Vorrezensenten. Ohne seine ausführliche Beschreibung von allen 3 Boxen hätte ich vermutlich den Schritt (Kauf inklusive Import) nicht gewagt. Da bisher vorallem über die Serie im Allgemeinen berichtet wurde, weniger über die 3. Box selbst, möchte ich diese selbst ein wenig stärker ins Visier nehmen.

Zunächst einmal gibt es viele Vorurteile über Lucas, Lucas Arts und sein Verhältnis zum Marketing (als Beispiel seien die Star Wars - Games der letzten Jahre genannt). Aber diese Serie hat mit Ausschlachtung eines Namens absolut nichts zu tun. Hier wird nicht altbekanntes ausgeschlachtet und plagiiert, sondern sich vom altbekannten weit weg gelehnt. Gefährlich weit. Die Serie "floppte" im Fernsehen, da sie nicht das geboten hat, was die logische Konsequenz der Kinofilme gewesen wäre.

Der Junge Indiana Jones hat nicht viel mit dem smarten, lässigen Actionhelden aus dem Kino gemein. Doch das ist keinesfalls schlecht. Der junge Indiana Jones versteht sich mehr als Zeitzeuge und Untergrund-Akteur von aktueller Geschichte anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, denn als stereotypsicher Schatzjäger.

Eine klassische Genrezuordnung lässt sich nicht festlegen. Geschichtstechnisch (in diesem Fall auch wörtlich zu sehen) beginnt die DVD-Box mit dem Ende des 1. WK. Indiana Jones verdient seine Brötchen als Spion für die Alleirten - allen voran Frankreich. Er sieht einen großen Teil der damaligen Europäischen Welt (letzteres wörtlich zu nehmen) und kämpft an jeder Front - zumeist friedlich im Untergrund. Ein nicht unerheblicher Teil dieser Folgen beschäftigt sich mit der fiktiven Geschichte um den zukünftigen Doktor Jones. Dieses gibt der kalten "Kriegsgeschichte" eine komädiantische bis romantische Note. Da sich das Ende des WK nicht ewig hinzieht, verläuft der Rest der Folgen in den Vereinigten Staaten. Ab hier wird die Geschichte persönlicher, Indiana steht mehr im Vordergrund als die große Weltgeschichte. Ich persönlich finde, dass die Folgen da qualitativ etwas abnehmen, aber das ist wohl Geschmackssache. Indy geht nun in der Heimat langsam den Pfad seiner dem Publikum bekannten Zukunft. Er setzt sich mit seinem Vater auseinander und beginnt ein Studium als Archäologe...

Wie gesagt, genretechnisch ist das Agententhriller trifft auf Comedy-Romantik, Politik-Geschichte, Krimi, Horror, Abenteuer und Mystery (letztere treten unerwartet auch in Erscheinung). Es ist ein bisschen als könnte sich die Serie nicht entscheiden, was sie ist. Realzeugnis oder doch eher Berg- und Talfahrt eines jungen Amerikaners, der sich dazu entschlossen hat fern der Heimat Geschichte zu erleben und gestalten... Oder einfach nur Geschichtsunterricht mit einem sympathischen Helden?

Die Aufmachung der DVD-Box ist klasse. Sie sieht aus wie ein nostalgischer Ledereinband in einem aussagekräftigen DVD-Box (mit klassischem Cover und Rücken). Der "Ledereinband" findet sich auch im Menü wieder und enthält 10 DVD's mit insgesamt 7 Filmen (die jeweils aus 2 Episoden der Serie zusammen geschnitten wurden) und mit genügend Bonusmaterial ausgestattet worden ist, sodass alle gestreiften "Themen" und Personen (z.B. Ernest Hemmingway) nachgelesen werden können und sehr bewusst zwischen Realität/Geschichte und Fiktion unterschieden wird.

Da diese Box nur im englischsprachigen Original erhältlich ist, gibt es weder deutsche Sprachausgabe noch deutsche Untertitel. Das ist aber sogar gut so, denn (diese) Geschichte wurde auf Englisch geschrieben und alle fremdartigen Einflüsse werden so sehr schnell deutlich. Die erste Folge dieser Box begann damit, dass Indy deutsch gesprochen hat!! - zu Österreichern, die ich wesentlich schlechter verstanden habe - das wäre in der deutschen Synchro sicher total untergegangen, weil es ja keinen Wechsel (e<>d) gäbe. Auch in der Blues-Folge würde etwas verloren gehen, wenn die Musiker plötzlich Hochdeutsch sprechen würden.

Alles in Allem gibt es kaum vergleichbare (amerikanische) Serien. Indiana ist dennoch zu erkennen - der Schauspieler Sean Patrick Flanery hat seine Hausaufgaben gemacht - und eigentlich ist die Serie viel zu kritisch um aus den oberflächlichen Staaten zu kommen. Sie zeigt wie die (alte) Welt sich ihre Feinde aufgebaut hat (Vietnam, Deutschland, Arabien,...), die das Leidensbild des 20. Jh. (und leider auch darüber hinaus) geprägt haben. Es ist unmöglich "kurz" wiederzugeben, was dort in kurzen Dialogen/Szenen angeschnitten wird (auch bekannte Personen und Erfindungen). Darum sollte sich jeder, der ein bisschen an seiner eigenen Geschichte interessiert ist, diese Serie schauen. Denn wie der gute Arnold so schön sagt:

Those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it.

Mein Tipp zum Verstehen: Einfach Untertitel (auch Englisch) an, es ist viel leichter, als man glaubt, da Young Indiana sich fast ausschließlich mit NICHT nativen Englischsprachlern unterhält.

Having watched the final set, my fears that it would pale in comparison with the second set have been unfounded. There are some very good episodes here, and the intial (perceived) weaknesses (more swashbuckling and supernatural themes) have turned out to be strengths; after all, these things are the cornerstone of the four Ford feature films and set the tone for those films. Here also is some good food for thought - as a couple of other reviewers have stated, the 'Winds of Change' is excellent and the completion of Indy's war-disillusionment. Like other reviewers, I do wish he would talk a bit more about the war and its affects; not that he should be shell-shocked, but just something a bit more human - the only attempt at this is made in the 'Mystery of the Blues', which would have been an excellent opportunity to explore this more within the context/juxtaposition of the quiet seat of learning. However, in Indy's defence, I have heard it said that the ideal soldier is a sixteen year old boy (in a man's body), as he'll do things in war that no man would and be less affected by them, which may go some way to account for his recklessness and ingenuousness in the earlier war years.

By way of criticism, I would point to that there has been some tinkering with chronology here and Hemingway's being wounded (unavoidably June 1918) is grossly at odds with the 1917-referenced episode that directly follows. Does mean that there's, in theory, a huge gap of October 1917 (close of boxset 2) and the Italian section. The Hemingway episode is I think highly important - I have always felt that the young Indy character was superego of Hem, owing much to his life: even the same birthday (July 1899) - as such poor Hemingway is shown to be ingenuous and brash, wholly inspired by meeting Indy. I was also uncomfortable about the 1950s Ford parts included in 'Mystery of the Blues': they are interesting, but do break the train of events - if Ford, why not George Hall then? (That's rhetorical, by the way.) The last three episodes do tail off a bit, but at least attempt to capture the era and prove good fun, but the shouting Prussian Stroheim is at odds with the real softly spoken Austrian Stroheim.

Anyway, for my money, the best episodes are 'Winds of Change' (with 'father' Lloyd Owen back and some exploration of their relations); the Istanbul/Transylvannia one; and 'Eye of the Peacock' (Remy back again). Educationally, I still think this series is good. It never pretends more. Likewise, criticism of war scenes and other content avoids the fact that the series was/is pitched at a young audience. The acting is sufficient - Flanery does what has been required of him and is mostly sympathetic. One of its greatest strengths is the emphasis on speaking of languages - it's been the message from start to finish: communicating in a foreign language is one of the greatest things in the world, and anything that promotes that in young people, cannot be bad.

So, go on, treat yourself to the final slice of the adventure - you won't regret it.
