Don't buy! It's defective and plays little behind the scenes pop ups during the movie that you can't disable. The audio and picture both get covered up by film crews talking about the making of the movie.

I recently learned that the new movie civil war is the same screenwriter director who produced this movie
So I had to watch it again. It is one of my favorite all-time sci-fi movies 🍿

Exactly as expected.Digit purchase of the Svi-Fi movie "SUNSHINE" played perfectly and the quality is excellent.

I really enjoyed this film and enjoyed re-watching it with the commentary by Professor Brian Cox, the scientific consultant for the movie.

Those reviewers who are stating that the science is poor (or even "ridiculous") may not have listened to this commentary. There are some errors, which Cox points out, but the overall idea is not impossible, or even so farfetched as to be 'virtually impossible'.

Professor Cox is a Royal Society University Research Fellow in Particle Physics at the University of Manchester who also works on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva. In his commentary he mentions discussing with other scientists at CERN about the Q-ball hypotheses and relevance to sun-dying and restarting in the movie. (Incidentally, he seems to believe the existence these super-symetrical (or super-stable) objects will be proven (by CERN) within the next 10 years or so.) His problems with science in the movie tend to be some of the smaller issues (for example - the craft orbiting Mercury a few times, rather than just a 'sling-shot' use).

His statement on what the penultimate scene means to him (even if it only occurs in a 'billionth of a second', or in 'the mind') is wonderful, and really impressed upon me the beauty, wonder, and awe many scientists hold for the universe. I think some reviewers only saw this scene in a literal earth-based perception of time and were put-off by it. Again, it's not necessarily meant to be seen that way. (And as mentioned earlier, Professor Cox's comment on its magnificence is inspiring.)

Another criticism reviewers have mentioned was why so many unstable people were picked for these missions. Again, I think these reviewers may have missed something covered briefly in the film itself, and then more in depth in the commentaries. The people picked were stable and generally the very best in their field. Something with gravity, radiation, or another undefined characteristic of the sun caused mental problems . . . this was the reason the second mission included a psychologist, and the reason he was experimenting with the impact of sunlight exposure. I also think the writer was using individuals to highlight various aspects of human nature, but that might just be me.

All that being said, this is not a Star Wars type of film. If that is what you are looking for, you may well be disappointed. On the other hand, it is a bit less obscure in meaning and plot than films like Solaris, and maybe even a bit easier to grasp on the first viewing than 2001, and, for me at least, imparted much of the wonder and awe that those films did.

To anyone choosing to see this film on DVD, I'd recommend watching it, and then watching it again (or at the very least, the last five minutes of it) with Cox's commentary. In my opinion his comments make a really enjoyable film even better.

Decent movie - a slightly different spin than the typical Sci-Fi space movie. Found it to be a little predictable.

Sunshine is a 2007 science fiction psychological thriller film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland. Taking place in the year 2057, the story follows a group of astronauts on a dangerous mission to reignite the dying Sun. The ensemble cast features Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis, Troy Garity, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benedict Wong, and Chipo Chung.

My feelings towards the pace in which this film moves is stained with ambivalence. It’s very clear from the start that the conflict at hand - the sun dying and needing to be charged - needs to be approached in a timely manner for the sake of all humanity; despite this, the audience is not made explicitly privy to the amount of time this mission must be completed in. The absence of this information removes an expected amount of urgency from the actions these characters are taking, and ultimately makes some of the decisions they make harder to understand and even harder to justify.

In regards to the special effects - I’m not blown away, but I wasn’t necessarily expecting to be. Moments that are overwhelmed with light are balanced out with those that are shrouded with darkness; while some have commented on how cheesy some of these effects are, I think it's fair to insert a reminder that these obscurities serve some purpose when the metaphorical value of them is considered. (Possible spoiler?) Individuals in this story that have the largest preoccupation with being able to “look into the sun” ironically stray the farthest away from the mission and are ultimately quite literally and figuratively blinded by their obsession. Even more ironically so - it is darkness that helps some of the least likely of characters avoid their demise when being pursued by a mysterious and nefarious intruder.

Decisions made by the casting and directing department - mainly, the decision to have all of the actors live amongst each other and research information related to their roles as a form of method acting- is reflected in the comfortable nature in which they interact. In addition to this, the characters themselves talk and behave in a way that is expected and is an indicator of some amount of expertise given the overall context. The downside, however, Is that calamity is not met with some amount of meaningful commentary or explanation that your average audience member can relate to and this undermines some of the presumed competency these characters are meant to have. I fear that the enjoyment one may get out of this film is in some way directly related to the amount of direct experience people have with the subject material….and whether this says more about the monotony of my life or the quality of this film - well, I’ll never know.

The individual performances alone by all of the actors hold their own weight; the emotional appeal is visceral on its own and ultimately makes this watching at least once. Because of points I already made it is unfortunate that these performances - despite all of their power and potential - subsequently feel disconnected and don’t demand the attention and investment they more-than-likely deserve.
Because I believe in being completely honest about my biases, I will just end by saying: my shallow obsession with Cillian Murphy has been reaffirmed by his icy-blue stare and his buttery-smooth voice.

Not the highest of recommendations by far -
But still a recommend experience.

The original DVD that the seller sent to me would not play correctly on any of my dvd players. I got in touch with the seller to discuss the problem. This particular dvd is hard to come by, but the seller was able to locate a replacement. They sent the replacement right away, and I was able to watch the movie last night . . . and it worked perfectly. I really appreciate the seller working with me on this issue. They are great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Un film de SF à placer parmi les grands !
Reviewed in France on February 8, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Zu nah an der Sonne....
Reviewed in Germany on February 16, 2012
