Product Description
NBA 2K14
2K’s Visual Concepts studio, the team behind NBA2K14, has seen it all in the video game world. Founded in 1988, the team has experienced plenty of new gaming system launches over the years. But never one like the launch of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Re-energized by the new systems’ technology, the seasoned team at VC has developed a completely new experience for next-gen NBA 2K14, featuring re-built game modes, a brand-new gameplay engine, and stunning graphics.
Next-Gen Visuals
To truly take the game to the next level, to nail the thousands of interconnected details that create a next generation visual experience, artists had to change the way they work, starting with the materials that make up the NBA 2K environment: rubber, plastic, metal, and vinyl. In the past, artists would individually recreate each item, but now next-gen technology enables the team to build a library of materials with the correct index of refraction, reflection amount, and so forth. Everything in-game, from the scorer’s table and backboards, to human elements such as skin texture and sweat, was re-created to ensure the whole package lives up to next-gen realism.

With Eco-Motion, the NBA experience comes to life in new ways: Crowd reactions, atmosphere, coaching strategies, real player voices, and, most of all, the emotion of the game. Player animations are dynamic, and evolve on the fly as you play. Player personalities and emotions factor into the game as well, affecting how players perform and behave on the court.

Graphics will get you in the door but the gameplay will keep you inside. If you played the PS3 version then there really isn't much new as far as controls go. The guys might move maybe a bit better (or worst) but it still has it's flaws in some areas. The players move fluid but still get tighted up when trying to cut between defenders. Ray Allen knows how to slip and slide through defenders as he finds his way to a corner for a big three. Here, you can get tangled up, not as bad as 2k13 though. On defense, your players can get shaken off pretty easy if you're controlling them. They don't seem to have quick reactions and can get left in the dust if you try to do too much. It's almost better not to guard to tightly. Given the space, you defend better because the offensive player usually run into you, trying to get to the hoop. But then they can also pull up for a jumper and you need to be on your toes to at least put a hand in the face. This balancing act can frustrate a new comer or a non patient player. But once you start getting that experience and know how to counteract these flaws, you'll find yourself enjoying a nice game of simulated b-ball. No arcade feel here, though I'm sure if you adjust a couple of sliders and difficulty level, you'll be able to get that feel if that's what you prefer. I put in quite a few games under my belt and I'm getting use to how things flow. Once you know what to expect, it make dealing with things a bit better. Hopefully future games tighten up the controls.
The game modes are not as robust as the PS3 counterpart. You have your basic quick matches, a GM mode (which I haven't tried out but can get all the info you need on it on the 2k website). My Career which I spend a majority of my time playing. The Park which is pretty much an online pick up game. Just like in real life, you hit a park which just happens to be a basketball haven of ballers. I don't play much online anything so I haven't tried this mode yet but I will test it out once I develope my player more into a worthy pick up. I haven't seen a mode for your standard league season play though I believe it might be tied into My GM mode. I'll update this once I dive into the menu setting a bit more.
Why don't I know more about the modes....we'll it's all MY CAREER mode's fault. Since it was first introduced as MY PLAYER, I've been hooked. It's was rough in it's introduction year but it's made strides. And though the last few years felt exactly the same as the previous, on the PS4, it's totally different. Now you got a storyline you follow. I'm still pretty young into my season (damn work, bills and family getting in the way) but so far I've enjoyed this version way more than ever before. You start off creating your character. This time around, you can't get super detailed as you could in the PS3 version. You pick a face out of many, and you give them a hair style and facial hair, change your eyes and hair color. Add some tats if you like....and your done. No more tweaking faces for hours on end...which I miss. I like my player looking as much as me as I can. But I made due. You kick off the story by getting an invite to the pre-draft scouting game...same as before...but this time you got yourself a rival. Without spoiling the fun...you get to chose how you react to this guy throughout the game. The game will put you in situations that can help or hurt how people view you. You're choices will directly effect your team chemistry, the way local fans and the GM view you and your overall fans. It's up to you if you want to be a humble player or a cocky player. The interviews after the game are not frequent at all unlike the previous games. It only takes place after something happens, usually through your interactions and if you had a good game where you set a personal record. It sucks that some of the interactions repeat it self so much already and I haven't even made it to the All-Star break. There's also times where the game just totally breaks the immersion. For instance, you'll have a player who will haze you...nothing serious and you can chose if you accept it or not. But in my version, I was having a conversation with this player and then in the background, I see him, in different gear. Unless he has a twin he likes to hang out with, it totally ruined the scene for me. Also, even thought they got some players real voice recorded during half time and end of game interviews, none of them talk when you're interacting with them. They just speak with their minds and you have the ability to read it. But the interaction with LeBron James is fully voiced. I got use to this quickly though. Not like you interact with them after every game. And as fun as the story is I'm here to play basketball. I'm hoping if they go with this mode again, they'll fix these issues. There's so much more I haven't seen yet and excited to experience this year which has made my other games take a back seat.
I always loved this series and this one, with it's minor flaws, is the best one available in my opinion. There's still a few bugs that I wish would go away...even with a new engine, it still pops it's head up like the shorts getting flipped inside out. You'd think they would have solved this issue. But as long as the one bug that has killed my experience on 2k13 and also popped up on 2k14 (PS3) from time to time doesn't show up, I'll be one happy guy. What's that bug you ask....the one that freezes the game. For me, and it happened every single time on 2k13, when you try to skip the screen where it shows the up coming schedule of a team. Usually it'll happen in the 3rd or 4th quarter. When ever I pressed x to take it off the screen to soon, it was an automatic frozen system. I tried to just not press anything but every so often when I'm trying to get through the games, I'd do it and it freezes. It did it to me once on 2k14 on the PS3. I haven't had that issue on the PS4. All that aside, if you enjoyed 2K in the past and you happen to have a PS4 just laying around, you'd have fun with this version. If you're a basketball fan, you really have no choice. I know there's another game you can choose but you're better off renting the two and making the easy choice. Don't spend your hard earn money on a game that looks like it should had been put on a PS2 game. The gameplay couldn't save that game. This is next gen and this game is as next gen as they come.
