District 9 is a 2009 independent science fiction action/thriller set in an alternate 1982, as a large alien spacecraft arrives above Johannesburg. When investigation teams enter the ship, they discover a population of sick and malnourished extraterrestrials, identified derogatorily as "prawns". The film is shot in a mock-documentary format. presenting fictional interviews, news footage, and video from surveillance cameras. Esentially the film portrays an apartheid era where the aliens are the new 'blacks' in a human world rife with xenophobia, and social segregation.
Rarely has a movie given such a sad and scathing indictment of human prejudice, peoples inhumanity. cruelness and corruption. Despite the subject matter the film is engrossing and thought provoking well deserving of a ***** rating.
2012 is a 2009 American epic science fiction disaster film in which a giant solar flare destabilises the earths core. The plot follows two main story arcs, that of geologist named Adrian Helmsley and Chief Science Advisor to the US President who attempts to predict when the final castastrophe will hit. Against this we follow Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) as he attempts to bring his children, Noah (Liam James) and Lilly (Morgan Lily), former wife Kate Curtis (Amanda Peet), and her boyfriend, Gordon Silberman (Thomas McCarthy) to safety, amidst the events of the geological and meteorological super-disaster. Excellent special effects and non stop action make this a disaster movie of epic proportions and a resounding ***** movie [despite the mushy ending]. If you like disaster movies such as The Posiedon Adventure or Towering Inferno, think global and you'll love this.
Battle: Los Angeles is a 2011 military science fiction war film that opens with numerous meteors landing in the oceans near almost every major coastal city on Earth. It immediately becomes obvious the objects are spacecraft containing hostile extraterrestrial soldiers, who instantly begin killing any Humans they encounter. The film then follows the actions of a small marine infantry squad as they first try to rescue civilians cut off by the aliens and then follows them as individuals go after the alien communications hub.
The plot and storyline are weak and but the action, tension and special effects are unrelenting. It's a good piece of escapism as long as you don't analyse it too much for its got more holes than a sieve. The film starts off in a promising manner as the more advanced aliens soon gain the upper hand, but it's not long before the gung ho attitude strikes and we 'inferior' types soon begin to hit back and the tide begins to turn. Deserving more than a *** this grudgingly gets a ****.
All-in-all three similar -yet different, films that should be in any sci-fi collection.
Battle Los Angeles was better the second time I watched it on this Blu-Ray version.
I think it's because you expect so much the first time you watch it and you're disappointed.
As for 2012, I know a lot of my friends hated this stereotype Hollywood 2012 movie, but for me, it was quite entertaining.
And I'm a Cusack fan, so I did like it.
All are visually stunning and well worth buying on Blu-ray. Special effects in all of them are amazing, especially in District 9, worthy of the full HD experience.
For the money, you can't go wrong at all.
I love Roland movie's (Independence day, Godzilla, The day after Tomorrow,Stargate), I have all his movie's, i love 2012 too, but i feel like the blu ray version is a lil bit off, the picture is not that clear, the loud is rather loud in some parts and low in other's, which is a disappointment.
Battle Los Angele's, is a horrible movie, excellent idea, badly excuted, the one thing about this movie is the soundtrack, it's on point .
The packaging was excellent.
The main reason I bought this set was because it was cheaper to buy all three movies than to buy "District 9" on its own (the only one I wanted). It pays to browse.
All top quality and on separate discs. Money well spent.
