Product Description

Detailing Dante's early years and set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry will retain the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have defined the iconic series but inject a more brutal and visceral edge. The Dante of DmC is a young man who has no respect for authority or society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast. He is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon and an angel. This split personality has a real impact on gameplay with Dante being able to call upon angel and demon abilities at will, transforming his Rebellion sword on the fly to dramatically affect both combat and movement. For DmC Capcom has teamed up with UK development studio, Ninja Theory, renown for delivering action titles with compelling characters and narrative coupled with high production values. The combination of Ninja Theory's expertise and Capcom's unrivalled heritage in producing combat focused action titles will ensure that this latest addition to the multi-million selling series will remain true to the Devil May Cry DNA so cherished by the fans, while bringing a new level of cinematic quality to the title.

Excited about the Reboot, I tried the demo... and hated it. I thought, what the hell is this crap? Who is this emo punk calling himself Dante and why does the combat suck so bad? These graphics are terrible, too. The game looks like concept art SKETCHES! After seeing DMC on many Top 10 Game Lists, I gave it a try at the incredible low price of $15.

Story: 9/10
This is an origin story for Dante. He's not the cool super hero Dante from the first series who rides missiles like skateboards. At this point, he's a young punk with an attitude, but he talks and acts like a real person. Hung over after a night of clubbing, the story begins in Dante's trailer when a mysterious girl exposes him to a hell dimension full of demons. On the adventure, Dante learns he has a brother, Virgil, and that he and Virgil are Nephilim, the spawn of angels and demons. Dante and Virgil must team up to slay the demon who killed their parents, battling through an army of demonic minions along the way. Although it does feel like a show on the WB, the longer you play it, the more you like the characters.

Graphics: 8/10
They're highly stylized, but I'm not too crazy about the style. The environments are varied from streets, to office buildings, to hell dimensions, to ancient ruins. This is not a great looking game, but the environments are very dynamic. They explode, twist, expand, collapse, strech... They couldn't just use standard texture maps with baked in lighting, so I'm cutting them some slack. The characters are very well animated and the creatures look like old dolls left to rot in hell. They're creepy looking, instead of just looking like your typical video game monster.

Gameplay: 9/10
The gameplay consists of:
10% Easy Platform Jumping with generous checkpoints. Use an Angel Whip to pull Dante toward a grapple point or a Devil Whip to pull the grapple point towards Dante.
1% Puzzle, which is pretty easy.
9% Exploration, where you should revisit old levels when you have new powers. You may see a ledge but have no idea on how to get there, and later you get an ability that makes it accessible.
80% Modular Combat.

The combat lock is gone and pushing directions to trigger Dante's moves has been replaced with a modular system. They new combat system works like this:
Dante has 4 weapons equipped at all times:
A Sword. (Y,B buttons)
A Gun. (X button)
An Angelic Weapon. (Hold LT+Y,B buttons)
A Devil Weapon. (Hold RT+Y,B buttons)

There are multiple types of guns, angelic weapons, and devil weapons and you swap them by pushing the D-pad. Up toggles your guns, Left toggles your Angel Weapons, and Right toggles your Demon weapons.

The combos for each weapon are very simple and a pause in the button presses differentiates the moves. So, Y, Y, Y, Y is one combo, where Y, Y, pause, Y,Y, is another.
The controls are: A = Jump, B = some kind of launch attack, X = shoot, and Y is a melee attack.
Hold LT to equip your Angel Weapon.
Hold RT to equip your Devil Weapon.

The beauty of this system is that the combos are completely modular and you can switch between them on the fly.
Start with your sword, Y,Y,Y, switch to your devil axe, B to send the enemy skyward, use your guns to shoot it and keep it airborne, use your angel whip to pull yourself up to the enemy, perform a Y,Y, pause Y, attack in the air, switch to your devil weapon for a smash him to the ground attack. How you mix and match your sword, gun, Angel, and Devil weapons are up to you. Transitioning between weapons is exceptionally smooth.

Because Y is always attack, B is always launch, X is always shoot, and A is always jump, it is incredibly easy to learn the combos.
Mixing and matching weapon attacks is where the game gets really fun.

There are some color coded enemies that are only weak to a certain type of weapon. Blue enemies are resistant to angelic weapons, while red enemies need to be slain by devil weapons.
There's a pretty wide variety of enemies, too.

Leveling Up: 8/10
As you kill enemies or smash objects in the environment, you get orbs. These are used to buy new moves for your weapons. There is a TRY (Before you buy) Mode which enables you to try out all of the weapons and their attacks so you can pick the upgrade / combo that you really want. This is GREAT!

Levels: 9/10
You can replay levels on any difficulty at any time, so if you want to go back to level 1 and farm orbs, you can. If you want to try out the tougher levels on harder difficulties, you can do that, too. The levels are varied and there's a good mix of combat, platform jumping, and boss fights. There's also quite a bit of spiteful dialogue between Dante and the Demons to keep you motivated.
At the end of each level, you are given a score based on your combat style (switching weapons and combos scores much higher than using the same move over and over), the hidden objects that you find, and the time it took to complete the level. This isn't the type of game where your health regenerates, so you will need to purchase health items. Each time you buy one, that item gets more expensive.

Sound: 10/10
The acting is very good, the music is great, and the combat SFX punctuate the action.

Maturity: M
This is a super violent game with lots of swearing, adult themes, and partial nudity.

Replay Value: 8/10
The game is 20 levels long and it will take you about 12 hours to finish. When you finish, there will still be a chunk of unlockable moves and stat boosts for Dante, so you're free to play on the harder difficulties. The game also has increased difficulty levels where the enemy AI is different and everybody (including Dante) dies in 1 hit if you want a challenge.

Overall: 9/10
I didn't think I was going to like this game, but I really enjoyed it once I gave it a chance. I like the new Dante and he gets better as the story progresses. After a while, I enjoyed the modular combat once I unlocked my first Angel weapon and my first Devil weapon. This is a really fun game if you like God of War style combat. To fully enjoy it, you do need to let go of the old Devil May Cry games and understand that this is a reboot, and not a remake.
Buy it if you love God of War style combat.
Buy it if you love teen drama shows on the WB.
Rent it if you have about 12 hours to blow through the game on default difficulty.
Avoid it if you need the target lock + directional push attacks that the old Devil May Cry games had.
Avoid it if you can't get over the red saturated art style.
Avoid it if you love the old series and can't stand reboots.

I at first was a bit skeptical, like everyone else was, with the game being revamped. That being said I took the dive and had faith that the developers would continue on with all of the expectations that I (as well as other gamers) have come to love from the franchise. Needless to say this game blew any and all doubt away for me. From the fast paced action, to the extremely fun, and intense boss battles, to the great and perfect fitting soundtrack: DmC delivered on all playing fields (pun intended).

First off the gameplay: The controls are top notch - the combat system has a small learning curve due to the switching out of weapons and guns throughout the fight sequences. But once you get passed it, the game becomes a whole lot of fun. Endless upon endless amounts of combos between the slashing and shooting plethora that is at your disposal. The movement is very fluid and sensitive without hardly any lag. My one and only complaint is that (and this is probably due partly from my own fighting style) the use of Dante's guns isn't used as much as the previous games due to A) the enemies being stronger to the point where shooting them with Ebony and Ivory does little damage, and B) as the game progresses your guns don't have any effect on certain enemies (I guess this isn't really a complaint more of a statement). With all of that being said the fight controls are on par with what I have to come to know from the franchise.

Then there's the story line: I have to say that I was really happy and pleased that they didn't try to redo the same story as the previous version of the game. (I will however mention that they did pay homage to the old Dante in the first level of the game - a good Easter Egg to say the least) They started it from scratch and retold a different story using the same characters that are in the old Devil May Cry games. This is the part that I was more concerned with for the simple fact that the DMC universe is such a good and ingenius story from the start. It is very different and stands on its own due to the complexity with Dante and his past from the first franchise. I was also happy to see that they told the story from the beginning in this game and left it open for the franchise to continue. I was always on the fence after DMC 2 with him going straight into hell to fight at the end of the game which made me question DMC 3 & 4, not to say that I didn't enjoy DMC 3 or 4, but I always wondered if they were ever going to bring him back from that ending. All that aside, the story of how Dante's past and his brother come to be and meet is very well done and told without giving too much away all at once.

Finally - the game itself. Considering my statements above and trying to not give away too much from the game (I hate spoilers myself so no worries). The game is solid. The way the story is unfolded, and with the whole new Limbo world/mechanic being added in to the DmC universe (one of my personal favorites about the game) for fighting sequences, is superb. The levels are outstanding (18 in total if you're including boss bottles) and suprisingly there isn't a lot of repitition of the levels themselves (something that irked me about DMC 4). The enemies are a blast to fight against and come in many, MANY varieties. You have of course the minions of the game, but the real fun is when they add the higher ranked enemies and mini-bosses to the fray in the midst of the waves of enemies that are thrown at you. One thing that I found different but refreshing is that they had a lot of aerial enemeies for you to fight against and that both the ground and aereal enemies could block and parry your attacks. In the beginning of the game it seems like it is your normal hack and slash game but it quickly changes the pace from the get-go. And because of Dante's weapons and fighting style - even the "recycled" enemies have enough differences to them that at times it feels like you're fighting two completely different enemies although on a technicality they are the same. One thing that I do want to mention about each level that is different from the other DMC games is that this game is very platform heavy (IE: A lot of jumping from one platform to the next - this is due to the world of LImbo though and how they immersed it into the game itself.) The developers desgined each level to have a different sense and feel to them and play out differenently where they seemed to stretch each level out to the point where no 2 levels played the same or for that matter looked the same. And if they did play out similarly - it would be at different spectrums of the game, and because of that, the game plays out in a nice and timely matter. Some levels where very direct - get to the end, beat the boss, finish - others where wait out and hold out - where others where puzzles that needed to be figured out but where never too daunting, and because of ALL of THAT and once again mentioning the AMAZING and GRATIFYING soundtrack (I will admit that there are a few levels that I replied a copious amount of times just to hear the music alone) - the game is fun - flat out, plain and simple. But - and this is a very small and inert 'but" - due to the intensity of the levels at times and how it is constantly changing due to limbo, plus the heavy and fast pace fighting at times and adding on the fluid graphics (for as often and repeatedly I have played this game - it has never once glitched, froze or lagged on me) and music - the loading of each level is a bit on the cumbersome side, but in my opinion is a small price to pay for the amazing game that is DmC.

So now that you have read this and knowing that I sold this game to you. Go play it. It is worth any and all the time you can put into it.
