This is the excellent original soundtrack with the 10 songs plus some `movie' sound effects between a few tracks.
Most folks who would love this probably already have the Steppenwolf, Byrd, and Hendrix songs, but it is still worth buying for the other interesting tracks that are almost exclusively identified with the film.
Those who have yet to figure out this film, the key song is certainly "The Pusher". As the song says, the Pusher is destined to be damned and that is exactly what these anti-heroes are. The film begins with a big drug deal (literally making these characters Pushers) and, as we see from the `flash forwards' throughout the film, they are destined for destruction (damnation). In a unique way, this is still an anti-drug movie (though few realize it at first viewing). However, even with that being said, this movie is ultimately an exploration of an entire (American) culture (Conservative and Liberal) in a state of terminal spiritual sickness.
This soundtrack is especially important for those of us who are old enough to remember the impact this film had on us (visually and musically) when it came out in '68.
There is a different version of this soundtrack which has two CDs of music, but the second CD is merely a collection of period songs that have little (if anything) to do with the Easy Rider movie or soundtrack. I recommend this single CD over the double CD version. I give this soundtrack 5 Stars (4 ½).
Amazon downloads are great, and encoded at 256kb, but here is my one pet peeve about Amazon downloads: Why do they have to name tracks from the second disk (and subsequent disks) with a leading parenthesis?
Let me explain:
The first disk numbering is by track number, for example: 01 - The Pusher
But the second disk is numbered with the Disk # in parenthesis and the track: (Disk 2) 01 - Pushin' Too Hard
In an ASCII sort, the parenthesis always sorts first, so when this soundtrack is downloaded, Disk 2 ALWAYS sorts first in the folder... so Disk 2 plays first, followed by the first disk, so playback by disk is flip-flopped. I always have to "fix" my downloads from Amazon (I edit each file and remove the first parenthesis), easy fix, but why can't Amazon get the sort right in the first place????
OK, enough about the sorting -- this is a great soundtrack, quality is great, and you will love it! Especially if this was the time you grew up in!
It happens to be even more pertinent and Crucial is this lost years of sheep following their xxxxx.
As for me, I recreated their crossing of the Colorado River listening to the album a few years ago. That part of California does not change much, but the bridge they crossed has been replaced.
