I initially thought this version was way more complicated and would be difficult to track throughout the game but was pleasantly surprised. It is not ever boring even hours into playing.
It has the balance of strategy and luck, much like life, to keep you engaged and enjoying it. Unlike Monoploy, a player far ahead in the game in monopolizing has to consider defenses of colonies and trade stations otherwise can lose victory points to another player.
I recommend watching YouTube channels on this game first, then read the instructions. It helps clarify quickly what is what and why. Also, pay close attention to the definition differences of a motherships strength versus speed versus Combat strength. We didn’t understand that until our second time playing it.
The game graphics and parts are beautiful and generous. The strategies of the game constantly interesting.
It’s worth the price tag.

Build quality is phenomenal. I would much rather pay $100+ for a game with quality pieces than something cheaply made. It builds on the concepts of the original Catan, but it is a fully new game - not a re-skinning. The way resources are generated, concepts of build/trade are the same. Rest of game is different.
Multiple ways of getting victory points, so multiple strategies. You do not get blocked like in original Catan. No roads or seaways to build. It was really exciting to build ships and send them off. Next time we play we will do the variant that doesn't disclose the solar system/empty space until you explore - excited!
It is a long game - the box states 2 hours to play. We played for 3 hours (all experienced Catan players, I had read through the rules and almanac before playing this version). The difference is that we had fun and momentum the whole time. It is not uncommon for a Catan game to start to drag at the end and you just want someone to win (and it is generally between two players with the others as also rans).
The encounters were really fun. It is a bit like choose your own adventure and you do not know what will happen.
My wife is not a big board game player, and she sat out the game last night. By the end of the playtime, she was excited to join us next time.
