Review
"The other"Replacement Supermen" have gone down in myth, but while all of that was going on there was an un-praised, hardly noticed at all, 5th Replacement Superman in the form of Bibbo Bibbowski. The thing that set Bibbo apart from the others was that he was the only truly normal man to try to fill Superman's shoes -- he wasn't a cyborg, a super-powered clone, or a Kryptonian war machine ... even Steel was an engineering genius -- no, Bibbo couldn't do much at all really, but he believed in enough in what Superman stood for to go out and try anyway." -- Elvis Dutan
"The best Superman storyline ever written ... collected in a beautiful hardcover omnibus. This is the definitive collection of the Death, Funeral, Reign, and Return storyline. It's a must own for any fan and worth every penny." -- Frank DeAngelo
From the Author
"The publicity came later, and then only because we'd come up with a (you'll pardon the expression) killer story. The word got out on a slow news day, and the media storm that followed was greater than anything we could have hoped for. But it was all thanks to the story's power.
"Doomsday smashing his way through a suburban Lex-Mart. Lois Lane cradling the fallen Superman in her arms. An enraged Lex Luthor breaking a chair over Doomsday's body. Bibbo Bibbowski kneeling in prayer on a barroom floor. The honor guard of Earth's super-heroes, following Superman's coffin through the streets of Metropolis. Jonathan Kent collapsing in a field. Lois and Inspector Henderson finding Superman's tomb empty. Coast City being wiped off the face of the Earth.
"Powerful stuff. And I got to see it all, long before you did.
"You see, each week, every Superman writer and artist received copies of each others' work in progress, so we could coordinate the stories for the [then] four monthly Super-titles. It was like a relay race, with the Man of Steel team handing the story off to the Superman team, who would pass the baton to the Adventures of Superman team, who would hand it off to the Action Comics team. Team-Action would then shoot the story to the Man of Steel team, and we'd start all over, always under the watchful eye of 'Coach' Carlin.
"I was so lucky to have worked with these wonderful, talented people. It's great to see our stories collected under one cover. For those of you reading them here for the first time, welcome.
"And for those of you who remember these stories from before, welcome back."
-- Roger Stern
From the Back Cover
It was one of the most stunning and talked-about events in modern comics history

About the Author
Karl Kesel loves his job far more than he has any right to. He has written, inked, and occasionally penciled most of the major comics publishers' major characters -- including SUICIDE SQUAD, SUPERMAN, SUPERBOY, HARLEY QUINN, Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, Captain America, and Section Zero. Kesel has an inexplicable fondness for minor, obscure characters no one else remembers.
Jerry Ordway has been writing, drawing, and painting comic books professionally since 1980 -- specifically on such titles as ALL-STAR SQUADRON, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, SUPERMAN, POWER OF SHAZAM, WildStar, FantasticFour, Avengers, Tom Strong, WONDER WOMAN, The Messenger, and Proton.
Louise Simonson is one of the best-known female writers working in the comic-book industry. She has risen to the top of the male-dominated business and has garnered acclaim for her work for Marvel and DC Comics, including SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL, X-Factor, Power Pack, STEEL, and New Mutants.
Roger Stern has written for radio, television, the stage, and the Internet, creating scripts for everything from sketch comedy to flash-animation. For ten years, he was the senior writer of the Superman series, and has written hundreds of stories about such diverse characters as Green Lantern, Supergirl, Starman, and the Justice League for DC Comics; and Spider-Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and the Avengers for Marvel. His first prose novel, The Death and Life of Superman, was a New York Times bestseller.

That's where this collection comes in. It's almost mistitled, because it's not really about either the death or return of Superman, but all the time in between. It's the aftermath of a national tragedy that's depicted all too accurately here in the reactions of those close to the character and the response of the media. It's in the sense of denial that's made all the worse by the arrival of four new Superman claiming the mantle of the fallen hero. The death and return of Superman are really just bookends for the true story between both events. While I feel that enough time and story had passed for the "return" chapter to be fitting, it's the period of grief and the struggle to move on that I found to be the most moving.
Beyond that, the binding is tight, it should hold up to reading all the way through and multiple readings. There is enough white space where the pages are bound so that you can see the full page (none of the page is lost in the binding). And I love that the cover is the torn Superman cape from Superman #75. Quite the dramatic flair. Looking forward to spending a few nights reading this.

Such a beautiful book and although I loved the artwork for the 2nd prining's cover more, I'm glad they included it in the back of the 3rd Printing book to make this printing even more complete.

This review is about the quality of the book itself. Like is it worth the $ 195 asking price? In a word? Yes. The book is absolutely gorgeous. The binding is kinda tight. But it's pretty good considering this book is an absolute beast. Its huge. Very little gutter loss. The pages are great quality. Thick and glossy. The color pops right off the page. Underneath the dust jacket is an awesome painted art of doomsday and superman fighting that was previously unused. It does have a problem closing at the beginning, but again, it's a huge book, and it's to be expected. But it you open it halfway, the book does stop surprisingly flat. You can def tell that DC invested some serious money making this thing.
Now this collection contains pretty much everything you need for this to be a complete edition. Although I would have liked the "hunter/prey" mini series to have been included. But that just basically the rematch between super and doomsday, and you finally learn doomsday origin. It's not essential. But for me? It was the final scene of an epic story.
My only serious complaint? Is the inclusion of the annuals. That year all the annuals were part of a big crossover called"bloodlines". It really has nothing to do with the main story. And the placement of these issues are rather wierd, and takes you out of the story. I not sure why DC put these in. I would have much rather had them leave them out and put in hunter/prey instead.
But all in all? If you want a beautifully made collection of an awesome story? And can afford it? Buy this book.
