Eisner Award-nominated artist Mike Hawthorne presents a true and tragic graphic novel memoir about family, abuse, survival and what it means to be Puerto Rican in America.

Hawthorne doesn’t hold anything back in this gut punch of a graphic memoir. - Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

Mike Hawthorne’s mother is left alone to raise her son in New York City, a city that torments them both with its unforgiving nature. But when Mike falls victim to an old world Santeria death curse, a haunting sign from the old country of something his mother could never truly escape —she begins a series of events that drive him away both physically and emotionally.

For the first time ever, Eisner Award-nominated artist Mike Hawthorne (
Superior Spider-Man) tells the true and tragic story of enduring abuse, discovering a love of art, and a passion that helped him to build the home he never had in this graphic novel memoir about family, survival, and what it means to be Puerto Rican in America.

This book is up there with any graphic novel I've ever read. It deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the work of Eisner, Spiegleman, Craig Thompson, and Daniel Clowes. If you only know Hawthorne through his Marvel work, prepare to be blown away. A very touching memoir that pulls no punches and doesn't shy away from difficult topics. I read it in one sitting and have gone back to it several times. I can't recommend this book enough.

This is a hard story to read. Not due to complex writing or anything negative like that, but due to some very heavy content. As I was reading I felt some really strong negative emotions and frustrations, but that's just a sign of how much it made me care for the characters. But what really makes me recommend this book is the very end. Without spoiling anything, it forced me to reevaluate the entire book. That final part forces other perspectives that really made my rating go from a 4 to 5. So I recommend sticking with it till the end.

The comic was immersive and had great narration. The art style was superb and the book came in perfect condition and quality! Great book smell too. This was a great purchase!

Hard to read, but a great read. I applaud Mike’s bravery in telling his story.

What else can I say other than what the review title says? This glimpse into the childhood and autobiography of creator and artist Mike Hawthorne is both touching, sad, crazy, painful and heartfelt. It is worth it for everyone to pick up this book and digest the story and the artwork together in one beautiful package. Not everyone had the easy path growing up as a kid, this is a great example of how a childhood doesn't define the person now. Give it a read, heck, give it multiple reads. You won't be disappointed!

This book was intense, both in story and artwork. The story had a therapeutic quality and I was so interested in the dynamic of mike's mom as a morally gray character who seemed both good and terrible all at once. The art style wasn't my favorite, but the actual plot was compelling and certain panels kept me captivated. Giving this a 3.5!

I knew the visuals would be fantastic. The story...
Just loved it. At the end, I could not stop thinking if I had enough experiences and thoughtfulness to fill a book half the size.

Moving. That was my initial impression upon finishing it; Mike Hawthorne wrote a powerful memoir and coupled it with top-of-his-game artwork.

Can't recommend it highly enough.
