Collects Invincible Iron Man (2008) #1-19.

Tony Stark — billionaire industrialist, Invincible Iron Man and now director of S.H.I.E.L.D. — faces the most overwhelming challenge of his life. Ezekiel Stane — the son of Tony's late business rival and archenemy Obadiah Stane — has set his sights, his genius and his considerable fortune on the task of destroying the Stark legacy. What's worse, Ezekiel has obtained Iron Man technology, and he's every bit Tony's equal — except younger, faster, smarter… and immeasurably evil! Then, following the Skrulls' Secret Invasion, Tony's entire life has been torn apart. What could make Iron Man the world's most wanted? Tony's failing health has made the armor too complicated to pilot, and he has Maria Hill on his tail — not to mention his entire rogues' gallery, all after the billion-dollar bounty on his head! And things only get worse from there!

I first read this story back in college and instantly fell in love with it.

Matt Fraction is one of the most talented writers in comics and Larroca's art has a photorealistic feel worthy of Marvel's favorite futurist.

In the pages of this book are the first stories of their run together, where we see Tony simultaneously haunted by his past and the horrors of the future of war machines finally surpassing him. While there are a couple slow issues, overall this is one of the great stories Marvel produced for the character. It also overlaps with the Dark Reign event, when Norman Osborn assumed control of Earth's security while donning the Iron Patriot suit as his new costume. Supporting characters like Maria Hill, Pepper Potts, Crimson Dinamo, and Rhodey all get fleshed out in interesting ways, some of which inspired their appearances in the MCU.

I bought my copy through another site but when I saw the only review for this book was 3 stars, I had to post my feelings on this masterpiece fro the late 00s. This book deserves 5 stars.

This comic made me realize that maybe Iron Man just wasn't for me in terms of the comic book world. I started off with Extremis, thought it was ok, could have been better with it's art and story, but it was a decent starting point. I then went with this book after reading all the praise it had gotten. By the time I read about a third of the book, however, I had to put it down and stop reading.

I just couldn't get into either the art, nor the story. When it comes to the art, it used either too much CG work (and I know that many artists use computers these days, but there's a difference between using digital drawing pads on the PC and still hand drawing vs using CGI software to generate an image) or it used too many stock backgrounds that were obviously stock images or they were oh so slightly altered to make it look "fit" with the art. I understand that the writers and the artists are in a perpetual crunch time to get these stories out, so I understand a little bit of cheating needs to take place. Don't get me wrong, I totally get the fact that it's a necessity, but when it comes to the fact that almost every page has a stock image background, then I'm going to start to lose interest in the artwork.

When it comes to the story, I just didn't feel attached to anybody. Not Tony or Pepper, not Ezekiel Stane, and definitely not Norman Osborn ans his Iron Patriot persona. I just couldn't find myself getting invested in what was going on. I'll admit that the Ezekiel Stane portion wasn't TOO bad, mostly because I was familiar who his dad was, but I felt like something was....missing from it. Like it almost felt shallow and empty, with very little to gain from it. I also didn't like the jarring jump from the E.S. story where Iron Man is the head of S.H.E.I.L.D. to the Norman Osborn story where S.H.E.I.L.D. has been dissolved because of some "questionable choices and actions of Tony Stark." Maybe because I was reading from a TPB that focuses on just Iron Man and missed out on a major crossover event that I wasn't privy to before picking it up, but I didn't care about the little private war Tony had with Norman.

Because of these two points, and after reading Extremis, I realize that maybe the Iron Man comics just aren't for me, considering the high praise this book had gotten that I've read from around the net before buying it. I even tried to look at some of the art online and what I had seen convinced me to buy, only to feel disappointed when I finally got it and sat down to read it. Maybe the book would fare better for the big fans of the Iron Man series, but for me, it just didn't cut it.

This run by Fraction is my favorite run of Iron Man and among the best that the character has. This isn't shocking because Iron Man hasn't really had a definitive run or transcendent run in the character's entire history. Most have been either average to just good. I would call this run great, mainly because it is better than most Iron Man I've read. Tony is written great here, just as cocky as his character should be, while also maintaining his heroic nature as well. The plot is super cool and unique, it takes place during the time he was head of SHIELD, but right before Secret Invasion ends where Norman Osborn, so Osborn is the main villain of this storyline, which is neat to see. The first story collected in this edition is about suicide bombings using Stark tech. This was a very personal story for Iron Man that expanded his character growth. The second story is better, which tells of the showdown between Osborn and Tony, which ends explosively and on a cliff hanger. Unfortunately that's where this volume ends, and it's been frustrating waiting for a new volume. It's also odd the way this series has been collected outside of normal trades. There are two OHC's that only collect up to issue 33, despite the fact that Fraction continued his run for 27 more issues and it also ties in with Fear Itself, which Fraction wrote. Ideally, Marvel should continue this OHC line with either one omnibus size that collects the 27 more issues and Fear Itself, or just collect the final 27 issues in 2 OHCs to make the set complete. But it looks like Marvel will never complete the OHCs, opting to collect with this complete collection and hopefully more to come. The art is nothing amazing, Larroca's art is either love or hate, and for this collection I leaned more towards the good side, which is fine.
