Loved this brought me back to my childhood. Loved all of the stories it was great to look back at how things used to be and still are.

These stories still hold up after all these years !! Steve Gerber was ahead of his time and his stories when combined with Mike Ploog's artwork took comics to whole new levels.
This collection is really very nice, high quality pages with colorful and sharp images that make the stores jump off the page.
I much prefer this over the overly large and heavy Omnibus which is also very nice but you could crush a zombie's skull with it if needed.
I'll be buying volume 2.

Most of these stories are hampered by the dreadful "Marvel house scripting style" which was prevalent at the time these comics were published. The last few stories, with art by Mike Ploog are a different story altogether. The last story is magnificent, with really outstanding coloring... Those Ploog stories make it all worthwhile. Val Mayerik and Steve Gerber never really clicked... more's the shame.

I've been reading comics for a *very* long time! So long, that sometimes it takes a collection like this to remind of how much of a sense of absolute wonder it was when I cracked open my first comics as a youth! Ah, memories..!

I enjoy many of the comics around today, but this series highlights a lot of what is missing in today's comics: simplicity, pure and simple! From the traditionally colored, i.e. not digitally colored, to the subtext of the stories, e.g. mysticism, hippies, and a love of the green planet as a whole! These are what made this read such a delight!

This volume opens with Man-Thing's origin, and very first appearance (in b&w, no less!), from SAVAGE TALES, and then proceeds to his lengthy story arc from ADVENTURES IN FEATURE, continuing into his own self-titled book, back to b&w with a tale from MONSTERS UNLEASHED #5 and then lastly with Issue #8 of THE MAN-THING!

Sure, the writing may seem a little dated, but consider when this was written, hmmm? The 1970's. It was right after the Viet Nam War, the country was still reeling from that debacle, as well as discovering an appreciation for all that contributed to the environment as we know it! Throw in a story or two featuring a pacificist or a hippy or even racism, as there is a story dealing with the Florida indiginous people! If that is what can be deemed "dated", well, serve me up a second helping please!

The art inside is a veritable buffet of the best of the best: Gray Morrow, Mike Ploog, Neal Adams, Val Mayerik, Howard Chaykin, John Buscema, Gil Kane, Jim Starlin, and Rich Buckler! While the writing is equally reputable: Roy Thomas, Steve Gerber, Gerry Conway, Tony Isabella, and Len Wein (who also was responsible for co-creation of DC's SWAMP THING)! That's a lot a talent for one book, right?

Look, I'm not gonna tell you what to read; that's not my bag! What I am gonna tell you is if you go in with in an open mind and zero expectations, you might just come away with as good a time as I had first time round!

Puh-eece! ☮

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite boring
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 7, 2019
It's ok in a nostalgic way, but many of the stories are actually quite boring. In my opinion Steve Gerber was/is overrated as a writer.
