Top reviews from the United States

Notwithstanding one reviewer who called this book "boring," it is an excellent collection of human-interest stories set in the Marvel Universe. It would be worth the price of admission just for the outstanding first story, written by Alan Brennert, about Namor and his friend Betty Dean struggling in different ways to recover from the traumas of World War II. (If you enjoy superhero stories with emotional depth, "Tales of the Batman: Alan Brennert" gets my highest possible recommendation. As "curator" Kurt Busiek says in his introduction, it's Brennert's all-too-rare comics output that helped inspire his own career as the writer of things like "Marvels," "Astro City," and the lesser-known but outstanding "Superman: Secret Identity.")

I would rate four of the other seven stories as excellent also: Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer's story about the people of Johnny Storm's hometown on the occasion of his 10th high-school reunion; Mark Russell's story about the need for repairmen as well as heroes (this time, Russell's politics are a good fit with his narrative, unlike his heavy-handed satire on the Flintstones series); Barbara Randall Kesel's meet-cute romance in the context of an Avengers battle; and Saladin Ahmed's touching story about a SHIELD agent's crisis of confidence during Marvel's Civil War.

I rate the other three stories as good but not great. Howard Chaykin's story about small-time hoods trying to survive in (or get out of) Spider-Man's New York and Mark Waid's story about heroes and activisits inspiring others to follow in their time were both a little light on plot. (I love Waid's work, but don't think his story was a great closer for the book.) And Jay Eddin's story about Scott Summer's pre-X-Men days suffered for me because of my lack of previous knowledge about the character's backstory (readers familiar with Cyclops's origin will probably like it just fine).

So, eight 30-page stories, all with good art, of which one is superb, four are excellent, and three are at least good---plus fun variant covers and Busiek's introduction. Sounds like a five-star book to me!

This collects a series of one-shot comics created in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Marvels. The writing and art vary from issue to issue, but stories are overall uplifting and show the positive impact of the Marvels (i.e. the Marvel superheroes) on the world around them.
