Message to the game’s designer(s) regarding simple but needed improvements to the cards and to the box/case:
1. It’s a little too easy to mis-read the numbers on the cards. (I assume/hope that is not intentional). For a game where timing and speed can be crucial, the cards’ numbers could be presented more clearly. Maybe make the cards two-toned so that the numbers are ‘standing’ on a darker (‘ground’) color with a lighter (‘sky’) background color behind/above? And/or perhaps make the ‘ground’ slightly curved so the individual numerals (in a two digit number) are ‘leaning’ slightly away from the centerline of the card? Anything that helps one quickly orient the numbers correctly with just a quick glance = right side up.
2. The box is the ‘wrong’ size.*
- The game ‘equipment’ is effectively just a deck of 100+ cards. The box’s shape/size is designed to hold 2 half-decks side-by-side. But two half decks do not stay separated in the box. The cards tend to ‘mingle’ in the box creating a bulge in the middle - or at one end - stressing the already weak seams (see below). A simpler box size/shape that just holds all 100+ cards in a single stack would be much better (IMHO) and easier to use.
3. The paper/cardboard box is too flimsy. Will not last.*
- The box I received in the mail already seemed a bit ‘shop worn.’ Seams started to tear after just two days of use.
- Single cards also easily slip out of the closed box through the gaps at the ends.
- After day 2, I needed to cello-tape the box’s weak seems (and I taped one end permanently closed)
- A simple plastic(?) case with a robust lid/latch would be a much better choice. I’m searching for one now to replace the box the game comes in.
- An additional ‘nicety’ (not necessity) would be to provide a separate ‘pocket’ in the box/case for the dozen or so non-number cards to keep them separated from the main deck of 100 numbered ‘play’ cards.
*refers to the “Pandasaurus” (N American) edition. Not sure if the NSV (Europe) box is similar.
This is one of the most uniquely fun yet simple games I've ever played! Let me just start by saying that I already played this game around 20 times with different groups in a few days after I first bought it.
The premise is simple and in the description, but we perhaps spent more time discussing what was NOT allowed then what was allowed. Basically, the less communication of any sort your group uses, the more magical the result will be. This game is VERY easy to pick up, but each game with a new group is unique, as part of the fun is watching how a group begins to "meld" their minds and succeed. It is best played with 4 players in my opinion, for a good balance of challenge and fun. (It's fun to see how different people think and adapt.) After a few plays, you will get a feel of how to iron out some rules. Some important ones I now decide beforehand are what limits to put on nonverbal communication, and how to use the shurikens. (We usually decide that after using one, play resumes from the last card put in the middle and NOT any of the revealed cards. Also we didn't allow any signaling to the revealed cards. They were simply out of the game but visible to all.)
There is a "blind" mode that adds extra fun and makes it that much more satisfying when you succeed. Cards are played face down, and you only see how well you did after all cards are played.
We did actually try modified rules to add more people, even up to ~15 players once! It was still fun in different ways. From looking at the table and playtesting though, the total cards should not exceed 40 (mid 30's max is better), otherwise it will be too easy.
Overall, this is a purchase I do not regret one bit. It has already brought many hours of fun with many different people, as all sorts of people can get into this game. The current price of just below $9 is lower than what I got it for, and an instant buy in my opinion to those who like any sort of group games.
