Good features, poor design.
3 Stars
Good features, poor design.
I normally mod my own controllers by installing rear tactile switches and ps3 style domed thumbsticks and the controller feels as natural as ever, but I wanted to try something new just because so I bought this controller. I have medium sized hands and have never had issues with hand pains or cramps using the Dualshock 4, the controller rests perfectly in my hands and there's no strain or unnatural positioning to press any button on a Dualshock 4.With that said here's my pros/cons of the Razer Raiju:Pros:-Mechanical Face Buttons are nice. Touchpad, PS Button, X, Square, O, Triangle are all easier to press with a nice click to them.-Easy to remap extra buttons on the fly.-Easy to set triggers to hair trigger mode (Instant response as you tap on them).-Optional trigger stop mode reduces throw distance of each trigger, but does not improve input response. This is more for whether you like the feel of it.-Metal thumbstick necks should allow for smooth movement throughout the life of the controller, they're smooth like a new dualshock. With a dualshock and plastic sticks I have to take a cloth or my shirt and run it around the necks of the sticks every month or so to rid of the worn plastic layer that has accumulated.-Nice protective case.Cons:-Dpad consists of 4 individual buttons that are about twice as hard to press as a standard traditional Dualshock Dpad.-Cannot turn on playstation with the ps button-No light bar, but that doesn't bother me at all-Extra set of buttons placed on top are the most awkward to pres, not sure why they're even there or what game would utilize those.-Extra set of buttons placed on the backside of the controller are not contoured to the controller. How my hand normally rests on the controller with index fingers over the top, thumbs on sticks and rest of my fingers wrapped around the handle I do not like having to to extend my middle fingers out and back to press the extra rear buttons. I played a full day of Destiny Iron Banner/Trials with this controller and at the end of the day I felt a strain in each of my forearms. This positioning is unnatural for your hands.-Placement of rear buttons when you're not using them causes your middle fingers to be pinched or have pressure points on the top side of your finger because the buttons stick out so far.-Analog sticks are concave, a big no-no for me. Without the rubber covers they are super slippery and I find my thumbs sliding around their overly large surface area. The covers reduce slippage, but again I don't feel as precise as I would be with ps3 style thumbstick or even a ps4 style thumbsticks. With ps4 sticks I place my thumb in the crevice of the "donut", with ps3 sticks I can rest my thumbs anywhere and have control without even thinking about repositioning my thumbs.-Controller feels wider and my hands don't just rest naturally on it like a dualshock 4, which has a perfect shape and design, minus the analog sticks. I wish the dualshock 4 came with ps3 convex sticks as I install aftermarket ps3 sticks in my ps4 controller for extra grip/precision/comfort.The last time I bought an aftermarket controller was for ps2, it was a wireless controller by logitech and before that was a mini controller by madcatz with overly stiff buttons. Overall it's an ok controller with a good amount of features that aren't implemented as good as they should be. If you've never experienced a slightly modded dualshock 4 to match these features you don't know what you're missing. I've heard of people getting cramps with DS4 controllers so maybe this is an option for you, but after playing with this Razer for an entire day then holding a DS4 the DS4 felt like heaven. I will stick with my modified DS4 instead. Sadly, I have never been impressed by a 3rd party controller.Attached is what my controller looks like. I had a soft touch faceplate before but I have since removed that for the original faceplate. Soft touch feels nice, but I didn't like that I felt it while playing if that makes sense. You can see the buttons underneath that are in position where your middle finger would rest so you don't reach for them like you would on the Raiju.

**Update 3/10/18

I had to return the 1st one I bought and just got it's replacement. This one is working perfectly. Great controller, triggers and analog sticks are not jamming like the 1st one I bought.
Remapping the buttons (you get 4) is super easy and you can do it while in game. I love the mechanical buttons, super responsive. The fact that is not wireless and mechanical buttons makes it way more responsive than normal ps4 controller. My only complaint is the d pad buttons, for some reason they decided to make them super hard to press, not like the rest of the controller buttons wtff where they thinking? idk... I guess I will need some time getting used to the d pad cause it's even harder to press than regular ps4 controller and it's a pain to deal with when you are playing fps and need to press them d pad buttons fast! Ohh, and the stop triggers wont work on COD WW2...
Nevertheless this is an amazing fps controller!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excellent product, perfect for fps games it really makes a difference when you play I couldn't be any happier!

** 3/5/18 update: So after playing only for 2 days my analog sticks feel like they are jammed, they even make like a rubbery sound when you move them and it is very annoying. I really loved the way it worked on the first day, I love the feel of the mechanical buttons, the remap-able buttons are perfectly positioned. The d pad buttons are a little too hard to press compared to original ps controller and also when you compare it to the mechanical buttons of the controller. They shouldn't have made them so hard to press...

This should not be happening on a $150 controller, I was extremely disappointing!

I will return this product and get another one and hopefully it wont happen again. I will update on this in a few weeks.

This experience was with the 1.01 firmware update and after almost a month of use. I was hoping that a real fix could be made.

The Razer Raiju Tournament edition had the potential of being a truly fantastic ps4 controller. I personally like the placement of all the additional programmable buttons and and how they felt / responded. The material for the grips is good improvement over the first ps4 Raiju (I owned it also, however an accident resulted in a trigger button breaking). I also liked the trigger stop switches on both the Raiju and Tournament Edition. I do not play fighting games so the button style D-pad was not an issue for me. Im also indifferent about the placement of the left analog stick and the D-pad. I was not able to notice an advantage, but it was certainly not a negative.

The first minor issue is with the phone app to program the controller. Frequently the controller would not be able to pair with the app and I would have to choose the add new device option for the app to find the controller. If I wanted to switch controller profiles I would need to go through this process nearly every time. This is a minor issue but it is still worth mentioning. The app itself though, is very easy to use and it's nice to be able to store and label multiple profiles. Being able to program the controller from an app ends up being a big positive in my opinion. I was doubtful at first but I ended up really liking it.

The main reason why I strongly recommend to not purchase this controller is because of the analog sticks. There is stick drift on both sticks. It is more prevalent on the right stick but there are instances of it happening on the left as well. For me, my characters would sometime just move on their own. Most of the time it would move to the right as if the stick were fully moved right. Menus would constantly scroll and it was a struggle to get it to stay at rest sometimes. The left analog stick was dreadful. Most of the time, when trying to move left there would be no response or it would be very sluggish and jerky. Both the left and right stick would have serious difficulty registering diagonal positions. It was either dramatically slower movement or none at all.

I purchased this controller in hopes to get really good analog sticks and it ended up being the worst aspect of the controller. I had two dual shock 4 controllers and they became unusable because the analog sticks would go bad. Left or right would not work well and diagonals would not register very well. Most people I have played with have experienced something similar and their controllers have not lasted a year.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS CONTROLLER UNTIL A MAJOR IMPROVEMENT AND OVERHAUL IS MADE. even then, be prepared to make a return.

Great controller. Without the 1.03 or 1.04 update there is a little input lag. Other than that, this controller is awesome for fps games and fortnite.

I'm a serious COD player on the ps4 and have been looking for a controller with paddles that work. This controller is NOT responsive enough for 1st person shooter games, even with the updated firmware. Such a shame and a shame to release a product this expensive and be WORSE the the OEM controller??? I also bought a Scuff Vantage which is 1 month old and im already sending it in for multiple problems, won't activate sprint, stick drift on both sticks, buttons not working in menus... I mention the Scuf because I was hoping that Razer...would have been a solid competitor... unfortunately not for COD. Serious serious stick lag to the point of unplayability. Of you dont need COD responsiveness.. then it's a nice looking and feeling controller... but then if again... just stick to a ps4 controller then.
