  • Who are the Rat Queens? A pack of booze-guzzling, death-dealing battle maidens-for-hire, and they're in the business of killing all god's creatures for profit. It's also a darkly comedic sass-and-sorcery series starring Hannah the Rockabilly Elven Mage, Violet the Hipster Dwarven Fighter, Dee the Atheist Human Cleric and Betty the Hippy Smidgen Thief. This modern spin on an old school genre is a violent monster-killing epic that is like Buffy meets Tank Girl in a Lord of the Rings world on crack!

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The Rat Queens are a tough, insouciant gang of ne’er-do-well girls (they’re certainly not ladies) who love a good bar brawl. When they are assigned a mission as punishment for their latest recklessness by the mayor of Palisade and it turns out to be a trap, Hannah, Violet, Dee, and Betty come back to the town to figure out who has it in for them and the other local fighting gangs. And if they have to beat up a few people and monsters to do it, then that’s just fine by them. Wiebe and Upchurch offer readers three-dimensional female characters with varying body types, races, sexual orientations, and backstories, while also including all the intriguing side characters, crude language, drug use, magic, violence, and sarcasm that a humorous, adult action-fantasy volume should have. Upchurch’s art has beautiful depth, and his panels glow with life. Offer this to readers tired of the same old comics featuring cheesecake depictions of female characters or to readers who like intelligent plots with a side of smart aleck. --Snow Wildsmith

Review

  • If you're looking for an M-rated series that is full of swordplay, sorcery, and sass, and you don't mind a bit of gore thrown in for good measure, you'll love this. Betty, Dee, Hannah, and Violet are mercenaries for hire who can drink a troll under the table, use language that would make an orc blush, and mercilessly eviscerate baddies. Off on a minor "quest" in order to make up for their drunken brawling, this kick-ass quartet soon realizes that someone or something wants them very dead. Making them dead, however, is far easier said than done. It's not just the fantastic pacing of Wiebe's (Peter Panzerfaust, Debris) text or former video game designer Upchurch's blood-sprayed action sequences, but also the characters themselves that drive the story relentlessly forward. Possessed of very different body types, personalities, and idiosyncrasies, and not afraid to share exactly what they're feeling, the Rat Queens are refreshing characters whose story will leave readers thirsty for more. BOOK RIOT -- Rat Queens Vol 1: Sass & Sorcery by Kurtis J. Wiebe, Roc Upchurch: A dark comedy centering around 4 women who drink, fight, curse, and go on quests-all while being kick-ass and awesome of course. I wasn't even a few pages in before I was wishing I could be a part of their group which then turned into me imagining all the awesome Halloween/Cosplay costumes to come! I want to tell you my favorite character but I can't choose. I mean I'll choose and then one of the other ladies will say something or do something and I'll pick her instead. So let's say my favorite is Betty, Dee, Hannah, AND Violet. That's my answer and I'm sticking to it. *I feel I must note that while the comic is 100% awesome ladies there has been issues, specifically concerning Upchurch, amongst the creators.

I'm really starting to like Image's directions toward comic book ideas. Not only are they proving that comic books don't have to sell with superheroes, but they are also proving that comics can sell with women leading. Rat Queens is a perfect example of this too. The main reason I wanted to read this comic was for the fact it was as the first time in a long time I saw an all-female team in comics that didn't look like a bunch of crime fighting supermodels. That last time I can think of anything similar is with the Powerpuff Girls and the Rat Queens are almost like the grown up versions in a fantasy way.

One of the biggest pros in this comic are the cast of main characters. I really like them all. I wasn't expecting much with some of them, but I really do like them all. Hannah is my favorite so far cause she the bad mouth free speaker type. Dee I would love to know more about because that party scene at the end is so me. Violet seems to me the most likely to be the leader of the group with a hipster quality. And Betty is just the most loveable character you'll ever read, she funny and spunky all rolled into one unicorn-doo. One trait these ladies share is they all can kick some serious ass. My idea of some drinking buddies.

Besides the new best-assembled team I now love, the plot and the art were great too. Not sure how many people watch Steven Universe on Cartoon Network, but it remind me a lot of that show as well. It take the idea of fantasy, but ages it up for people like me who want a little maturity in there reading. Like I like fantasy, but I tend to stay away from D&D or WoW stuff cause it's too over the top for my liking, but this calms it down a bit, adds some beautiful vulgar language, doesn't follow cliché plots, and actually lets women take the center stage.

The art is great as well. I love how he draws close ups of his characters. He makes the background all blurry like a photograph. I just like the character designs as well. No character has the same outfit and they are all colorfully drawn to show how different they are in personality. Dare I say this person can draw blood well too? Yes, this comic is super violet, like Luther Strode, but makes the comic worth reading.

There's a number of readers I'd recommend this too, but the biggest ones are people like me who want to see women in comic be more than the pretty face or the sexy bad guy. I'm very interested to see how far this will go and hope it one hell of a great ride. I think I need a Betty Special now.

In this golden age of comics, it has become far too easy to let excellent series slip under the radar. There are almost too many series out, but if you are at all interested in fantasy with a grown up edge, do not miss Rat Queens. The series follows the mercenary group, the Rat queens, as they try to navigate the town politics of palisade without pissing everyone off and streaking the streets red with blood.

Betty, the smidgen and rogue, Dee, the atheist cleric, Hannah, the foul mouthed mage, and Violet, the dwarven warrior, make up the Rat Queens. They are drunken, violent, foul mouthed, and a lot of fun. The art perfectly suits the excellent story that is equal parts fantastic action as it is well crafted, humanizing, character developing moments. The city of Palisade is excellently crafted and filled with interesting, engaging characters of whom you will want to know more of by volumes end. It is the rare series whose ancillary characters endear themselves so quickly, making Rat Queens all the more impressive.

This volume, at the time of writing this, is $8.99 for the five issues currently on the shelf. For such a low price, you get a lot in return. Though I came into this series knowing nothing about it, I can say with total certainty that I would be going to my local comic shop and having it pulled, on top of collecting these excellent collection. A must buy for fantasy fans who don't mind things on the grown up side. A definite buy.

I love comics. I co-host a nerd culture podcast where I am the resident comic nerd and I avoid this for so long because everything I had heard and read about it made me sigh. It seemed unoriginal and cliche. Then I read it.

This is easy the best comic I've picked up in the last year. I read this volume, then bought 2 & 3 with one-day shipping. It's that good. I don't want to spoil anything, but the cast is a solid mix, don't even think that all female is gimmick or a ploy, the humor is adult, but it's hilarious and not just raunchy, the art is great, the writing, dialogue, story, the pacing, they are work in sync to produce something so awesome that I really thought that BKV had to have been involved

5.0 out of 5 stars Uma deliciosa surpresa

Easily one of the best reads I've had in a while in the graphic novel genre. The characters have dimension and there are some really great moments in this. It some how captures and melds a contemporary setting within the usually archaic world fantasy genre stories seem to be stuck in. You'll know what I mean when Hannah uses her relic to communicate with her mother. I particularly enjoyed this book because the characters were so diverse, seemed to have their own back stories (which I'm interested to see in future graphs), and the brutal violence and crass language had me laughing all the way through. I was sad to see that the next volume won't be available until May! Well, guess that means I get to read this a few more times before that comes out!

TL;DR - buy this book if you enjoy strong female characters, magic, graphic violence, sexual innuendo, and creative pairings of swear words.
