Editorial Reviews

Review

"The accent is on last-stand heroics and all-out action, but there's still room for enough sub-plot drama to keep the tension tripwire tight. A cracking good graphic blockbuster." -- Win Wiacek

"An absolute epic story with an all-star cast of characters to keep you riveted to each page." --
John Yelverton

"Another example of the stories from this era building on each other without necessarily making it essential that you have read the previous sagas before getting to the latest one. You can enjoy
Panic in the Skyon its own but also as a piece in a larger tapestry." -- Michael Bailey

"This Superman space-opera guest stars nearly every DC Universe hero from the time. The trade ties together a bunch of dangling plotlines from the early-1990s, but should be accessible to new readers. Not only is there a lot of great action and alien warfare, but this story served as something of a post-Crisis transition from Superman the "new" hero to leader of the JLA. Highly recommended." -- Collected Editions

"This is one of the best stories from the [Post-Crisis] era of Superman -- the time I've long felt showed the most consistent excellence and sense of direction in the character's long life." --
Russell Burlingame

If the DC Extended Universe is going to do a standalone Man of Steel sequel in the future, they should one based on "Panic in the Sky" storyline. This graphic novel pits Superman against the return of Brainiac who had recruits Dagna, Maxima & a brainwashed Supergirl to help him with his plan to use the planet Warworld to invade Earth. So the Man of Steel recruits Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Guy Gardener, Deathstroke, Mister Miracle, Captain Marvel and many other superheroes to aid him against his nemesis.

This is a classic Superman graphic novel of the '90s. This is a must-have collection for all die hard Superman fans.

This is the modern story where Superman steps into a leadership role in the DC universe after shying away from it since Crisis on Infinite Earths, it's a great example of the character as well as sporting a strong supporting cast including Draaga, Maxima and of course Brainiac. This is a classic and if you want to know why Superman is so respected by his peers, this is a good story for it

"Superman: Panic in the Sky" is a conceptual cousin to "Legends," the DC Comics event miniseries which served as the launchpad for a post-"Crisis on Infinite Earths" version of the Justice League.

The latter, of course, gave us the comedy/action "Bwah-Ha-Ha" League. "Panic," on the other hand, sets the table for the return of a more serious, more traditional take on the team-one that's light on humor, heavy on large scale action/adventure, and which features the DC Universe's major heroes, with Superman at the forefront.

"Panic" declares many of its intentions in an early double-page spread, after Green Lantern Guy Gardner's just insulted Captain Marvel by calling him "Captain Whitebread":

MISTER MIRACLE: Put a sock in it, Gardner!
BATMAN: Can't say that I miss the banter of my former colleagues!
SUPERMAN: Let's not make this a situation comedy, folks...

Ah, that Superman, such a party-pooper.

Both he and the Caped Crusader are constantly reminding their fellow heroes-including not only the aforementioned but also Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Nightwing, and many others-that they must act as a team in order to defeat Superman's old enemy, Brainiac.

Since this event miniseries originally played out among the Man of Steel's family of titles-"Superman," "Action Comics," "Adventures of Superman," and "Superman: The Man of Steel"-the title character receives development, as well. In the early post-"Crisis" era, he made a point of preferring to work alone, but this story's events make him reconsider his attitudes: "Working with these other dedicated folks has shown me that teamwork is necessary when you're up against a menace more powerful than yourself," he says in an epilogue. He also hints that this team could fill the void left by the dissolution of the "Bwah-Ha-Ha" League.

In this story, Superman and his diverse team must stop Brainiac from conquering Earth with the aid of Warworld, a planet-size satellite built for destruction which both sounds like and looks like the Death Star from "Star Wars." Not only does Brainiac have a technological terror at his disposal, he also has his own allies-which include the Supergirl of this time, not Superman's cousin from Krypton but a shape-shifting alien called Matrix who chooses to look like a young blonde woman who wears a female version of Superman's iconic costume.

A very different Lex Luthor is on hand, as well. At the time "Panic" was published originally, he was pretending to be dead because his old, bald, obese body was dying from radiation poisoning, so he'd cloned himself into a younger, healthier, hairier body and was passing himself off as his own son, on the side of the angels.

With the presence of four writers and 10 artists, "Panic" could easily have gone off the rails, but it feels well-thought-out and cohesive, with a subtle yet firm guiding hand from original editor Mike Carlin. It's not without glitches, though. For reasons unexplained, Brainiac needs mental helmets to control the minds of members of Superman's team-but he seems to control Supergirl's mind through sheer force of will. Also, we get two different artistic renditions of Captain Marvel in the story's course: Dan Jurgens draws him in a realistic, illustrative manner, but Jon Bogdanove draws the character's original, cartoony version from the Golden Age of the Forties.

"Superman: Panic in the Sky" is recommended for not only Superman fans but also for fans of the Justice League and of DC's event series. In fact, for the reason cited above, I recommend purchasing "Panic" together with "Legends."

Panic in the Sky is a fun 90's romp from Dan Jurgens that essentially sets the stage for a lot of the early 90's era Superman comic book storylines including Death of Superman. When Brainiac takes over Warworld and aims it towards Earth, Supes collects a host of superheroes to take on the threat and combat Brainiac's champions: a brainwashed Matrix (a shape-shifter) who takes the form of Supergirl, Maxima whose planet has already been conquered by Brainiac, and Draaga (a former champion of Warworld with a grudge against Supes). The heavy hitters take on the alliance on warworld itself while Batman leads a secondary team to defend the home front. The collection also features some Superman issues from after the arc with Superman making nice with Lex Luthor the Second and Jimmy Olsen helping metas from Exile World get back to their home. The book sets up now classic Superman elements like Lex Luthor's "son" (actually the original in a cloned younger body), Matrix taking the mantle of Supergirl, Maxima joining the Justice League, Brainiac's crazy 90's goatee, and even precedent for Deathstroke joining with the good guys due to his tactical genius. All in all a fun throwback to a zany time in Superman's history and a great read for fans of the reprinted Death of Superman series.
