WOLVERINE: WEAPON X GALLERY EDITION Hardcover – April 12, 2022

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 352 ratings

WOLVERINE: WEAPON X is the character-defining origin of the man known only as Logan. Written, illustrated and colored by auteur creator and master storyteller Barry Windsor-Smith, it is undeniably one of the greatest Wolverine stories ever told. After being taken hostage by an experimental Canadian military science outfit, Logan is transformed into Weapon X, an unstoppable killing machine with an indestructible Adamantium skeleton and razor-sharp claws. But Weapon X cannot be contained by his captors — and trapped in their lab with the monster they have made, they will face his feral wrath! It’s a psychedelic horror story in the mold of Frankenstein, newly restored from original art and print sources for this stunning oversized edition! Collecting material from MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS (1988) #72-84 and WOLVERINE (1988) #166, plus UNCANNY X-MEN (1981) #205.

This is a really awesome book, but I suggest purchasing it from a different retailer. Amazon just doesn’t put care into their packaging, and my copy came damaged.

This is my 3rd color Marvel Gallery Edition purchase, the other two being the Captain Marvel and Warlock compilations. By a significant margin, this is the best Gallery Edition I've purchased in this series as far as *accurately* representing the art as it originally appeared in the original comics as well as including "bonus" material.

First off, the story and art throughout by Barry Smith is incredible. Although I have the original comics and the 1st hardcover printing of the story, the larger size of these gallery editions was enough for me to once again rebuy this collection of comics by one of my favorite artists at the peak of his abilities. The reproduction of his work in this larger format looks impeccable and unlike what some other reviews say, the coloring is *not* washed out but true to the original presentation.

Graphically, the paper is warm, off white matt versus the glossy bright white of the other two books with no black edges, thus the pages don't stick together when the book is first opened. This look also gives the book more of a somewhat authentic pre-late 90's comic book appearance and complements the original coloring which appears a bit more subdued then the rather garish reissues on gloss white paper that have been released over the past few decades. The only thing I would say negatively about this graphic choice is Marvel could have used a bit heavier paper stock but that's a minor complaint at best.

The contents include the original Barry Smith written and illustrated Wolverine/Weapon X story as well as a short 5 page story detailing the fate of one of Wolverine's victims. Plus there is a Barry Smith illustrated X-Men story (from issue #205) detailing his battle with Deathstrike. Finally, there's 44 pages of various Barry Smith X-Men and Wolverine color comics covers and scans of original art.

If you're a fan of the Wolverine character and especially of artist Barry Smith, this book gets my highest recommendation.

Barry Windsor Smith is a great artist and this graphic novel is a good example of his work. The story is savage and bloody and explains how wolverine came to be what he ultimately was in the x-men.

They have cut all the cover page and intros to make it seem like a 120 page story.
Word is one guy drew it all.
Chris clarmont was involved.

Weapon X by Barry Windsor-Smith is a masterpiece, the characters that take center stage aren’t Wolverine, they aren’t even established characters they’re regular people with secrets , shady pasts , or genuinely need a job to pay bills. And yet these characters give the world of “Weapon X “ it’s captive feeling. Chapter by chapter you’re invested in seeing the payoff for the cast and that’s not even mentioning the thematic symbolism, motifs of control, of nature vs nurture, of fate this story has only grown in stature and for good reason should be added to your collection.

A must for any Wolvie fan. This was how he got his adamantium exoskeleton. Quiete chilling and hard-core, it's Wolverine in his most carnal definition.

As I love work from BWS this book is everything I can ask for. Not big and oversized as an Artist Edition is, but perfect to enjoy the amazing drawings inside it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Color is bad yet still worth for the oversized BWS art
Reviewed in Mexico on May 24, 2022
Whomever is buying this already knows what to expect about story and art: it's a masterpiece. Nevertheless, the edition itself is a mixed review for me: the color is bad and it's been decades since Barry Windsor Smith said he was up to recolor it proper to a new type of paper but for whatever reasons Marvel just won't comply. On the good side, I like the bigger art size reproduction and is the closest to an Artist Edition we'll ever have. Also: it includes Uncanny X-Men 205 which basically is BWS's prelude to Weapon X. Since I've never got any other of the collected editions, this one is more than OK for me.
