However, there’s a couple things that bring this book down a star for me. One: it’s soft cover, for some reason. Most other FromSoft artbooks are hardcover (ex: Dark Souls Design Works), but this one isn’t. It’s not a deal breaker but it’s unfortunate. Two: there isn’t any insight as to the design process of any environments, weapons, or monsters in this book. To me, a great art book shows concept art and has interviews with artists and designers about the choices they made when designing in-game assets. This kind of lacks both of those. They only show finished pieces of each monster, weapon, etc, but no concept work. There’s also no interviews or design notes that indicate what the thought process was for these designs, which really stinks.
Tl;dr: Fantastic art, but you’re not going to get a Madman’s Knowledge from this one. Clean renders only, no concept work or design interviews, all wrapped in a paperback cover. It’s good, but could be something even better if they made some different choices.
As the for the content itself, this is amazing! Page after page of concept art from the game. Every single piece here it nightmare fuel and the fans of the game or horror games will love it. Like the game itself, there's not much info behind each piece of concept art. I did find issue with the paper stock used by Udon, but other that this large book will make a nice addition to your art-book collection.
