Bury yourself in Gothic Horror in this premium edition boxed set adventure for the world's greatest roleplaying game.

Under raging storm clouds, the vampire Count Strahd von Zarovich stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of Castle Ravenloft. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind's howling increases as he turns his gaze down toward the village of Barovia.

Far below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd's face forms the barest hint of a smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came--all according to his plan.

A lightning flash rips through the darkness, but Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind fills the midnight air. The master of Castle Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited.

A guide to Barovia

Learn What Fortune Awaits You

In the right hands, a Tarokka deck can tell tales of the future and provide answers to many a dark and mysterious question.

Crucial to running the game, these cards determine key aspects of the adventure, foretelling a path that makes each party's journey a little different.

Instead of just images in a book, this set comes with a full deck of fifty-four foil-stamped Tarokka cards, plus a folding box to store them in.

Tools of Terror

Prop up a DM screen that sets the scene for an atmospheric adventure through Barovia. Four pieces of art created just for the set will help players visualize their surroundings as they explore.

Customized for running a Curse of Strahd adventure, inside you'll find tables for daytime and nighttime encounters in Barovia, the Barovian calendar, Barovian names, and rules for challenges often faced in Strahd's domain.

Invite Players to Their Doom

The cold embrace of a thick fog, a lingering sense of dread, and a newfound awareness of your fragile mortality—Welcome to Barovia! Stay as long as you like. Longer, even. . .

Formally invite players to join your campaign with postcards depicting infamous Barovian locales: Castle Ravenloft, the Old Bonegrinder, the Abbey of Saint Markovia, and the Death House. Get three 4x6" copies of all four, each with cheeky messages and beautiful, stylized art.

Become an Adventurer

Adventurers come in all shapes and sizes. Find one that’s fun for you.

An elvish cleric, driven from society for trespassing on tradition. A dwarven paladin, atoning for an ignominious past. The Player’s Handbook provides the skeleton for your characters. Flesh them out however you choose.

Join the Party

D&D brings people together and forges new friendships. Silly moments spawn inside jokes; moving battles leave treasured memories—whether in the heat of battle, embroiled in social intrigue, or solving clever puzzles, your party has your back.

Choose Your Own Path

The woods are growing dark. Behind a mass of ivy, you see the stones of a crumbling castle. What do you do?

In D&D, your options are limitless. Because the Dungeon Master, as narrator of your tale, can improvise in reaction to any choice you make, what happens next is entirely flexible. Do you dare go on?

I'll start off with the bad. When I received my copy in the coffin-shaped box, I noticed that a single corner of the box was torn. I believe that this tear wasn't from poor quality but rather from weight shifting during transit and putting pressure on a weak point of the box, causing it to tear. It isn't that big of a deal to me personally but should be noted as a possibility.

As for everything else in this box set, I see it as a major improvement on the standard book. The adventure is split into multiple paperback booklets, with each having different information for the adventure. Although the paperback design may make it more susceptible to wear and tear over time, I find it much easier to leaf through the paperbacks to find the information that I need.
Since the material is broken down into booklets, it usually makes it easier to find what I need. I can have the adventure booklet open to set the scene while I flip through the monster booklet for the beast they might encounter. It's a welcome change to the usual appendices which I deal with in my standard hardback books.
Unfortunately, it can still prove confusing to find certain information, as a certain NPC may only be described in one booklet, but not the other. This is a relatively minor complaint but I did find it strange at times.
The other added materials are very nice too. Having a graphic of Strahd is a unique bonus as I could use it to show my players what they're up against, all while having a quick reference to the updated statblock on the other side. The map of Barovia is very nice and seems to be quality, although the map of Castle Ravenloft on the flipside is quite confusing as it shows different perspectives without fully annotating the changes between those perspectives.
Also included are postcards which I found to be a unique touch for the adventure and a fun twist to formally invite players. The tarroka deck was also a welcome addition as it was included with a guide to using and reading the Deck. Although these are minor touches, they provide another level of immersion into a wicked horror adventure.
I do want to quickly touch on the DM screen included in this box set. As someone who has made a small habit of trying to collect various DM screens, I have to say that this is my favorite screen by far. The colors are extremely pleasant and fit the atmosphere and the art is absolutely amazing. For the DM, it is an indispensable trove of information that makes running the adventure that much more of a blast.

Overall, this box surpassed my expectations and, in some cases, blew them out of the water. There are some changes that took a while to grow on me before I fully appreciated them, such as having paperback booklets as opposed to a special cover hardback book, but in the end, these tweaks are unique and fun changes. I highly recommend this box set for any DM, aspiring DM or player looking to dip their toes into this amazing adventure!

I am familiar with every 5e adventure up through Tomb of Annihilation (and I have DM'd Out of the Abyss, Storm King's Thunder, and Lost Mine). In my opinion this is the best, though the best parts of OOTA are at this level. I was skeptical about running a horror-themed adventure b/c my group is sort of into traditional swords and sorcery, but the story was so good that this objection was quickly swept away. What I like (and the below includes spoilers that are inappropriate for any non-DMs):

1) The overall atmosphere is wonderfully spooky, with lots of superb little touches -- a pool of water that reflects a character's face but much older, abandoned children's toys, dead people hanging mysteriously from a gallows beside the road, villagers who are afraid to speak to the PCs, a duplicitous invitation to Strahd's realm to kick things off, a tower with a huge live heart beating in it that causes the tower to shake and tremble, and that explodes in blood when attacked.

2) Strahd is a wonderful villain -- it is fun for everyone the way he is supposed to escalate his attacks on the players. First he might just watch them, or send his spies to gauge the characters' powers (which is itself a spooky encounter), then he might change shapes (a lost dog scratching at the door, an orphaned child) to try to lure the players to allow him to come close. Then as they become a true threat he tries to kill them, most likely in his castle, which contains all sorts of areas ripe for an ambush. As the DM, you control Strahd and get to cook up his murderous schemes, but the book also gives you plenty of ideas and guidance. It is also fun to have him identify particular players that he particularly likes or hates; I had him try to kidnap a player he fell in love with, and another player he tried to destroy above all others (after first charming that player and trying to chop off his hand, in full view of the others).

3) The basic structure is straightforward to run, and the players are never left to feel that they are wandering around pointlessly (as occasionally occurs in SKT); they have a clear objective, which is to escape from the valley controlled by Strahd, and which can be done only by killing Strahd. Such a simple plot, but so many twists along the way. To succeed the players have to (a) visit two towns, both of them fully brought to life and invested with dread in dozens of little ways, with great NPCs, (b) visit several locations to obtain magic items that will help them defeat Strahd, and then (c) go to Strahd's castle to kill him. The locations with the magic items are determined by a tarot card reading -- a really great and spooky thing in and of itself. Of course I rigged the card reading to pick my favorite locations, e.g., a mill where children's bones are ground up into pastries sold by night hags, or an abbey run by a lunatic, full of his gruesome Frankenstein-like creations, including a bride to be offered to Strahd and made from dead bodies....

4) There are some great fun traps -- eg a doorway that can be opened only by mimicking the body positions of the stick figures etched into the lintel, in the order indicated by a line connecting the stick figures. Strahd's castle is just excellent in every way, full of wonderful NPCs, and far from the standard hack and slay D&D climax.

5) The writing is excellent. This adventure has gone thru multiple iterations, and it has the feel of a classic that has been improved and deepened and broadened several times. Chris Perkins is the writer for pretty much all the best D&D modules, and he said this one he wrote easily and quickly -- I think he really got in a groove and did a great job adding on to the older versions (which were justly celebrated in their own right).

I found this book very interesting with plenty of ideas that I have not heard of but here. For example, how souls are trapped in the realm and how that affects the place.

The only thing, although it is pretty complete, the book is very open to you as a DM to add your own plots / ideas. Also, it's a really big area and you already have some 20 different places with their own set of NPCs, certainly hard to keep track of everything in that world. So I would say this is more for advanced DMs.

Possibly Wizards' most popular adventure book, Curse of Strahd takes place in a Ravenloft setting demiplane outside the physical realms of existence. Its a very dark tale and a Gothic Horror theme. Includes new race options such as Danphyr. Explore the Lands of Barovia as you try to uncover Strahd Von Zarovich's conspiracy. Will you defeat him, die trying or maybe even join him? Who knows!
