Still, even with those mild complaints, the system itself is very fun and action-packed, and I highly recommend it to Star Trek fans or fans of tabletop role-playing games in general.
If there is an aspect of the setting that a GM would like to highlight, they can always do that. I just believe that game systems need to help support a GM in the quest to do things like that, and you will find that this game does not support non-conflict related role-playing, and in that fashion I believe it kind of misses the point of Star Trek.
Conflict occurs in Star Trek, but it is really just a paintbrush used to tell a story. Honestly, as much as I absolutely love the current line of Star Trek television shows, they haven't done much to explore out of conflict traits of the characters the way previous Star Treks have. Star Trek Voyager, Star Trek DS9, and Star Trek TNG all did a phenomenal job at giving us a strong impression of character traits, likes and dislikes, and out of conflict skills.
Even if you are like me, I believe you'll still enjoy this system, but you may have a strong desire to make house rules and long for the extracurricular skills that don't exist in this game.
All in all, the book is rather well made, feels good in the hands and has a new book smell, ahhhhhh. It's presented a little chaotically with many asides and non-sequiturs on nearly every page talking about nuances and notes about the Galaxy at large and the inhabitants of such. This book just lays out how to play the game as a player and gamemaster (no need for separate books!), and looks like the TNG computer screens.
It's a very large instruction manual coming in at over 300 pages for just the base rules. There are supplemental books for each oft he divisions in Star Fleet and each quadrant in the Galaxy. I feel I more than got my money's worth and my group is excited to play!
You might think why would you need a pdf file? Printing character sheets and quick reference sheet to important information..
Do I like the 2d20 system its not what I am used to, but for plot and story telling and making a game flow like a story its really great for that.. as for stats gear and the like its a little lacking..
Still have not figured out the bonus you get for rolling under a certain number? But I am still skimming the book and have watched a few videos as well... book came lose in a box? and slid around, corners a little bent but not enough to worry about..
If you are familiar with star tree's computer screens on TNG, the whole book is designed like that. The white and yellow text on the black background are easy on the eyes. The purple texts get hard to focus on. I've seen YouTube comments saying it is difficult to read with color blindness.
That aside, the game is really good. The character building has more steps than dungeons & Dragons but that is because you are building a character more for a story rather than a math equation parading as a murder hobo. But if murder hobo is what you want, go buy the Klingon rule book. Same system but written in the perspective of Klingons and encourages you to kill aliens on strange planets.
