The main purpose I purchased this laptop, is I wanted the AMD CPU, I had heard good things and when I saw this laptop with the price, I read tons of reviews and found it suited my needs. Mostly productivity, music and video conversion and remote management. I wanted a 15" 1080P screen, and while they are getting more and more common in the lower end market, I needed the GPU performance to back it up when I want to play games.
The biggest point I have found with this laptop as far as performance is concerned, make sure to use the Asus drivers if you want good battery life! Secondly, if you want way better performance without stutter, make sure you get a good quality stick of RAM and at minimum, double it to 16gb. I had a stick of 8gb Hynix ram kicking around and I dropped it in, it easily doubled the ram performance which greatly increased FPS under the games I mentioned earlier, I can run Fo4 at 1080P on High Quality settings with the Vega graphics and maintain 60FPS. Which also keeps the computer cooler by not running the 1660 TI.
The build quality of this laptop is extremely good in my opinion, it's not quite the same quality as my older Thinkpad T430, but it's surprisingly close. The keyboard does feel nice and the keys required a good amount of force, but the travel is not as deep as my Thinkpad was. I can still maintain 70 WPM, I'm not a fast typist by anymeans, but this laptop does not interfere. The touchpad would have been nice with 2 individual buttons, I really dislike this new fad of a clickpad, that may be fine on a macbook, but I need my right click for work.
The screen isn't very bright. I will say that right now, my T430 has a brighter display, however, I use the computer inside so it's not a problem. It's more than adequate for what I am doing. It's a nice clear screen which to me is more important than sheer brightness.
I like that this computer has no webcam, I have never used a webcam and I don't intend to start now. I also have no use for front facing phone cameras, but that's a topic for another day.
Inside you get 1 free NVME PCIE and 1 free DDR4 2400 MHZ Ram Slot. I added an 8gb stick like I mentioned before, taking a benchmark before and after showed roughly a 60% increase in memory bandwidth. If I can find the benchmark, I can try and post a screenshot. This also helps drastically with the Vega GPU, it really performs well with good memory. I have not added a PCIE SSD at this time, the internal 512gb is okay for now but I will need more storage eventually, I had a 2tb SSD in my TP430, so I definitely want to get back to that amount soon.
Temperature... This computer gets hot, when you play games or run the CPU at max for a bit. I run it on the Silent profile when I am on battery, and I can get roughly 6 hours on it, more if I turn the brightness down and just do basic stuff. Right now writing this review, it says 44% remaining, 2hours 36 mins. Not terrible considering full brightness, keyboard backlight is on and the fans are running at low. I updated the Nvidia graphics drivers to the latest version and I experienced a lot of heat issues and battery drain, so I had to roll back to the latest Asus provided drivers, which rectified the issue for me. Because I am not gaming, that doesn't bother me, but it may bother some.
I know this is a long review, but I have found some of the reviews here and on the web to be slightly deceitful or just plain wrong. Is it a perfect laptop? No. Is it a decent all rounder for the occasional gamer that needs a PC more for management purposes or development.
The latest BIOS (308) Appears to correct some thermal issues and performance issues too, keep in mind.
